The work fence and its associated mechanism are al1 supported upon a pivotally mounted fixture 58, which may be made of cast metal, and which has a substantially horizontal body flange 5|. The body flange 5| may comprise a member which is formed with a substantially circular boundary 52 at its rear edge, and which has an elongated front portion 53 of sufhcient length to span the space between the brackets 4| and 42.
The circular portion 52 is provided with a centrally located cylindrical bore 54, and the lower side of the body flange 5| has an annular engaging rib 55. At its front the elongated body portion 53 may be provided with an upwardly turned flange 56, which is joined at each end to the body by webs 51 for reinforcement.
The upwardly extending flange 56 and web' 51 support a pair of parallel substantiallycylindrical bearing discs 58, 59. The bearing discs 58, 59 are provided with centrally located apertures 6|) for receiving an adjustment shaft 6|. justment shaft 6| is rotatably mounted in the bearings 68, and at each end it carries a discshaped member 62, 63, which is secured to the shaft by means of set screws or other convenient securing means.
The discs 62, 63 are provided with threaded apertures for receiving the ends of the screw bolts 64, 65, 66, 61, which pass through apertures at the ends of the parallel links 48, 49 at each end of the work fence. The apertures in the discs 62, 63 are preferably oppositely located o-n the same diameter so that the links 48, 49 and the lines of centers between the bolts 46, 41 and 66, 61 describe a parallelogram.
The vertical angularity of the work fence 21 may thus be adjusted by rotating the discs 62, 63 and shaft 6|. For this purpose the work fence itself may be grasped and its angle changed, assuming that the clamping devices, further to be described, are loosened.
In order to clamp the links in predetermined position, the screw - bolts 64 and 66 are provided with hand knobs 68, 69, which'are used to clamp the uppermost links 48 tightly against the discs 62, 83 to hold the linkage in fixed position. Whe-n this is done, the complete assembly, comprising the work fence 21, links 48, 49, discs 62, 63, and shaft 6| may still rotate as an entirety on the shaft 6| and means is provided for preventing this rotation, comprising a threaded member 10, provided with a hand knob 1|. This threaded member 10 is shown in Fig. 7, where it is threaded into a threaded bore 12 in such manner that the end of the threaded member 19 may engage and clamp the shaft 6|.
The fixture 50, which supports the fence 21 and associated mechanism, is itself rotatably supported on a slider 13 (Fig. 5), which may be made of cast metal. The slider 13 is provided with a horizontal bore 15, which has a clearance at 16. This may be accomplished Iby casting the fixture 13 with bores 15 slightly smaller than the desired size, and machining out the bores 15 to an accurate t of the shaft 38.
'Ihe fixture 13 also has an upwardly extending column surrounded by a horizontal, circular plate 11 for engaging the under side of the fixture 56. The fixture 58 is rotatably supported upon the plate 11 by means of a tubular threaded member 82, having a radially extending flange or head 83 at the top for engaging the washer 84 and holding the iixture 50 against the plate 11.
The :tubular member 82 has an axial bore 85 and external threads at 86 for engaging in the threaded bore 8D. Thus the tubular member 82 may be driven into its bore 88 in the slider 13 until the fixture 50 is supported for rotation on a vertical axis, so that the Work fence 21 may be located parallel to the edges of the table sections or diagonally thereto.
Furthermore, the threaded tubular member 82 may be driven down into its threaded bore until the fence is clamped in any desired position, longitudinally or transversely of the table sections.
The threaded bore 8| in the slider 13 is adapted to receive the screw bolt 81, which has a conical end 88, adapted to be slidably received in the V-shaped groove 34 of the guide shaft 38. By means of the head of the bolt 81, this bolt may be driven down into its threaded bore 8| until the slider 13 is merely guided for sliding movement on the shaft 38, but rotation on the shaft 38 is prevented. By driving the bolt 81 down tightly into the groove 34, the slider 13 may be clamped in any desired longitudinal position on the guide shaft 30. f
The two threaded members 81 and 82 are peculiarly adapted to be actuated by the same end of a Wrench, which has a pair of suitable sockets, one of which is adapted to lit the head `of the bolt 81, and the other side of the same socket adapted to fit the head of the threaded member 82, which preferably has a hexagonal head also.
The sliding member 13 is adapted to be directed or actuated in its sliding movement by means of the rack 33 and the pinion 89 (Fig. 4). For this purpose the slider 13 has a transverse enlargement 99, which is provided with a vertically extending bore 9| and counterbore 92.. The counterbore 92 is adapted to serve as a bearing for the drive shaft 93, which extends through the counterbore 92 into the bore 9|.
The drive shaft 93 is provided at the top with a hand knob 94, and the two plates 5| and 11 are provided with arcuate slots 95 `for passing the drive shaft 93, so that it may project from the top of the mechanism for adjustment.
At its lower end the drive shaft 93 is provided with the pinion 89, which may be formed with the gear teeth 96 at its upper end, and .at'its lower end with a radially projecting flange 91, adapted to serve as a thrust bearing. l
The pinion 89 has a longitudinally extending bore 98, which is adapted to receive the shaft 93, and the pinion may be secured to rotate with the shaft by means of a set screw 99, preferably of the hexagonal socket type. Above the enlargement 98 of the slider 13, the shaft 93 may be provided with a thrust bearing |06, comprising a metal collar fitting on the shaft 93 and having a suitable set screw |0|.
Referring to Fig. 3, it will be observed that the rack 33 on the guide shaft 30 does not extend to the extreme end |02 of that shaft, but terminates at the point |83. This acts as a stop surface in cooperation with the teeth of the pinion 96, as the fixture can be moved outward no farther after the teeth of the pinion 89 engage the cylinv drical end portion of the shaft at |03.
It will thus be observed that the fence and its associated mechanism carried by the slider 13 may be moved forward and backward by means of the rotation of the knob 94, which actuates pinion 89 on rack 33. It may be clamped in place by driving the screw bolt 81 home.
The lower edge 39 of the fence 21 may be provided with a shallow, arcuate groove |04 so located that the fence has a clearance with respect to the cutter 22 when the fence is resting on the table top in such a position as to be above the cutter.
Due to this arrangement the fence 21 may be moved forward by means of the rack and pinion until it covers all of ythe cutter which is not being used, and only that portion of the cutter which is exposed in front of the fence may be used.
The fence is thus adapted to serve as an auxiliary blade guard when it is in this forward position.
'I'he work fence is adapted to be so adjusted that it may rest upon the table sections 25 or Zi, to be elevated by the elevation of either section, or it may be clamped at any elevation by means of the threaded member 1U and the knobs 68, 69.
While I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, many modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of all changes within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
l. In a woodworking tool, the combination of a work support with a cutter carried by said supportmounted on a shaft, said support having a pair of work tables mounted thereon for adjustment at any of a plurality of elevations with regard to said cutter, a laterally extending shaft carried by said support, said shaft having a pair of longitudinally extending guide surfaces, a fixture slidably mounted on said shaft, said shaft having a rack formed on one side thereof, a pinion carried by a second shaft rotatably mounted on said fixture, said pinion engaging said rack, said second shaft having a hand wheel for actuation of said pinion, said fixture being provided with a horizontal face fiange, a work fence supporting member having a similar horizontal face flange, said latter member `and fixture having registering centrally located bores, a headed member extending through said supporting member and threaded into said xture, said headed member having a centrally located bore, and a bolt threaded into said fixture and extending through vsaid headed member, and having its non-circular head projecting therefrom for engagement with a tool, said bolt having its end formed with surfaces complementary to said guide surfaces whereby the fixture may be slidably mounted on said first-mentioned shaft and clamped in predetermined position by said bolt.
2. In a woodworking tool, the combination of a work support with a cutter carried by said support mounted on a shaft, said support having a pair of work tables mounted thereon for adjustment at any of va plurality of elevations with regard to said cutter, a laterally extending shaft carried by said support, said shaft having a pair of longitudinally extending guide surfaces, a fixture slidably mounted on said shaft, said shaft having a rack formed on one side thereof, a pinion carried by a second shaft rotatably mounted on said fixture, said pinion engaging said rack, said second shaft having a hand wheel for actuation of said pinion, said fixture being provided 'with a horizontal face flange, a work fence supporting member having a similar horizontal face flange, said latter member and fixture having registering centrally located bores, a headed member extending through said supporting member and threaded into said fixture, said headed member having a centrally located bore, and a bolt threaded into said fixture and extending through said headed member, and having its non-circular head projecting therefrom for engagement with a tool, said bolt having its end formed with surfaces complementary to said guide surfaces whereby the fixture may be slidably mounted on said first-mentioned shaft and clamped in predetermined position by said bolt, saidr supporting member having .a pair of bearings, a shaft in said bearings, said shaft being fixedly secured to a pair of discs, a pair of links at each end of said shaft pivotally secured to diametrically opposite points on said discs, said links having their forward ends pivotally secured to a work fence, and means for clamping engagement with said last-mentioned shaft to secure the work fence at predetermined angular position with respect to the table.
