Description

T E. J. BARTLETT & F. T. WILSON.
Devicefor Feeding Air to Furnaces.
No. 222,440. Patented Dec. "9, 1879.
WITNESSES MENTOR 4 w ATTORNEYS "UNITED S TATES PATENT OFFICE.
EZRA J. BARTLETT AND FRANCIS T. WILSON, OF AMES, IOWA.
lMPROVE MENT lN DEVICES FOR FEEDING AIR TO FURNACES.
I Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 222,440, dated December 9, 1879; application filed May 8, 1879.
1 IF. T. WILs'o of Ames, in the countyof Story and in the State of Iowa, have invented cerfor Feeding Air to Furnaces and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had a to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, makinga part of this specification.
,The-nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for giving artificial draft to furnaces, as will be hereinafter more fully setforth.
g In order to enable others skilled in the art ,to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to de- I l scribe its coustructionand operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which '-Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of y .0111 device. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the distributing-pipe. A represents a fan-case, with outlet at B. Within the case A is a fan-wheel composed of a central shaft, 1), with two corresponding series of radial arms, a a, to which the wings G O are attached. These wings are made in elliptic or semicircular form and their ends fastened to the arms.
i From the outlet B a small p'ipe, d, communicates with the distributing-pipe, which is to extend under the grate of the furnace.
Thedistributing-pipe is madefin the form of a semi-tube, D, having its sides D D extended upward and tapering nearly to apoint. ,Under this pointed taper is fastened another wtain new and useful Improvements in Devices semi-tube, F, which is perforated, as shown,
to allow the air to escape upward. At each end is a castiron head, G, fastened by bolts, which completes the distributing-pipe.
On the inside of the mouth or opening of the distributing-pipe is fastened a damper, I, which extends the whole length, and is adjusted by means of set-screws h II, for the purpose of regulating the blast. By means of this damper an equal amount of air will be thrown out all the way from one end of the pipe to the other; or the blast may be entirely shut off, if desired.
The distributing-pipe may be turned so as to throw the blast in any direction.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the distributing-pipe herein described, the damper I, arranged. in the mouth of the pipe, extending the entire length thereof, and adjusted substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the fan-case A with fan I) a (J, connecting-pipe d, the distributingpipe D F, with mouth D, and the damper 1,
arranged in and extending the entire length a of the month, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 8th day of March, 1879.
E. J. BARTLETT. F. T. WILSON. Witnesses:
