H. E. WOODS. Grate for Furnaces.
No. 222,432. Patented Dec. 9, 1879.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
fiORAOE E. WOODS, OF ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS.
. IMPROVEMENT IN GIRATES FOR FURNACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,432, dated December 9, 1879; application filed July 15, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Honaon E. Woons, of Rock Island, in the county ofltock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grates for Furnaces for Locomotives, Engines, 850.; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of said side barsv Like letters of reference indicate like parts.-
My improvements relate to that part of the fire-box or side bars whichsupport the gratebars.
Prior to my invention or improvement, as hereinafter described, the grate-bars in alocomotive fire-box were sustained above the ashpit by means of angle-irons or side bars rigidly attached or riveted to and against the inner shell or wall of the fire box. This method of rigidly securing the side bars that support the ends of the grate-bars to and against the inner shell or wall of the fire-box is objectionable, for the reason that it causes oxidation of the inner shell or wall of the firebox, thereby requiring frequent renewals or which Letters Patent were granted to me July 24, .1877,No. 193,586, I attach at the usual height, above the ash-pit K, a series of studs or brackets, f f, of suitable length, to the inner surface of the shell or wall h of the fire-box,
i and upon which are placed the removable side bars, E, which are constructed of iron or other suitable material, in the form as shown, and of a length nearly equal to the length of the inner longitudinal shells or walls of the firebox.
The side bars, E, are provided on their lower edges with notches c c, to allow the bars to ride upon said pins or brackets f f, and on their upper edges with notches or grooves b b, to receive the rounded ends or bear-in gs of the grate-bars D.
hen it is desired to use said side bars, E, in an ordinary fire-box not provided with the mud-chamber l, as shown and described in said Letters Patent, 1 bolt a series of brackets or supports to the inside or to the under .side of the mud-ring of sufficient length to by imparted to the side bars, E, whereby ashes, cinders, &c., are prevented from lodging between the side bars, E, and the inner wall of the fire-box, the side bars yieldinglaterally thereto, and so as to permit the ashes and clinkers to fall between the wall of the firebox and side bars and between the side bars and grate, thereby keeping the inner surface of the inner shell or wall of the fire-box free and clean and from-contact with the side bars and preventing the usual oxidation thereof.
Having thus described the nature and object of my invention, whatIclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a fire-box, the combination, with its shell or wall, provided with the pins or brackets f f and grate-bars D, of the longitudinal reciprocating and lateral rocking side bars, E, provided with the notches or grooves 12 b and c c, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
