-|M PROVEM ENT IN SH E E'P-PRO,T'ECTO RS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,368, dated December 9, 1879 application filed October 30, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. SPEER, of
I lPittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheep-Protectors, the same being an improvement of the sheepfor the neck of the sheep, which collars are provided with sharp-pointed projections, and are coupled together by two or more links.
To the upper side of the rear collar is attached a chain, strap, or strip of metal or other materiahwhich passes along the back of the sheep "and branches off toward the thighs of the hind legs, and is attached to a shield on each hind leg, which shields conform to the parts of the hind legs above the knee, said shields being perforated and furnished with outward projecting points. p
To enable others skilled in the art with which my invention is most nearly connected to make and use it, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specification, Figure l is a side i A view of a sheep having my improved protector arranged on it. Fig. 2 is a top view or plan of the protector, representing the several parts united. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same.
In the accompanying drawings, A repre sents the front collar, and B the second or These collars are made in two ing points, as at e. The collars are coupled together by links, as at f, and, when on the sheep, looked, as at h. v
held togetherwith relation to each other on the sheep by means of small chains 5 but leather or metal strips may be employed. for this pur pose; also, wire cord, or hemp or cotton cord, may be used; but preference is givento wire chain.
The shields D are represented combina tion with the two collars A B; but asingle collar may be used in combination with the shields D, and form a very good protector.
It has been observed that dogs ot'tenattack sheep at the points covered by the shields D; hence the'employment of them in combination with the collars A and B, or with the single oollarA or .B. The projections or points onthe collars and shields operate to lacerate the mouth of the dog in case it should. attack the sheep, the point of attack, as a rule, being the parts covered by the collars and shields.
\ Having thus described my improved sheepprotector, what I claim as of my invention 1s 1. A sheep-protector consisting of the collars A- and B and shields D, provided with suitable connections, substantially asherein described, and for the purpose set forth..-
2. A sheep-protector consisting of a collar and shields D,'provided with suitable connecting apparatus, substantially as here'in de scribed, and for' the purpose set forth;
J AMES B. SHEER.
