Description
NOV. 19, 1940. J KORENCHAN 2,222,413
FASTENING STUD FOR'HOUSEHOLD FIXTURES Filed July 10, 1939 Patented Nov. 19, 1940 PATENT OFFICE FASTENING STUD FOR HOUSEHOLD FDKTURES John J. Korenchan, Chicago, Ill.
Application July 10, 1939, Serial No. 283,577
1 Claim.
The fastening stud of the present invention is intended primarily to provide a plug for the insertion of an ornamental thumb tack or the like for the purpose of securing a curtain loop to a window or door casing, or under similar conditions where it is desirable to make provision for the easy insertion and removal of a thumb tack or similar fastening device.
In view'of the fact that the trim of a door or window casing is frequently made from hard wood or metal it is difficult or impossible to insert a thumb tack or similar fastening into the trim for the purpose of securing a curtain loop or other fixture or device, and in such cases, where it may be necessary to occasionally remove or re-insert the thumb tack, the trim will be marred by repeated efforts to force it into the surface of the trim.
The present invention is directed to a fitting 0 in the form of a stud or button which may be permanently afiixed in place and which provides an impaling surface of relatively soft material such as soft wood, cork or composition, into which a thumb tack or the like may be easily 25 inserted as occasion may require, without marring the appearance of the trim and which in itself will present a neat and attractive and ornamental appearance.
Further objects and detailswill appear from 30 the description of the invention in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a sectional elevationof the stud of the present invention in a form employing a wood screw for attachment to the trim and with 35 an ornamental thumb tack in position to be forced thereinto;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same; Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the stud provided with a threaded bolt for use in metallic 40 trim; and 1 Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the stud provided with a smooth prong or spike.
The stud of the present invention comprises a small plug or button ill of soft wood, cork or composition, which is surrounded and enclosed on its sides and base by a relatively hard protective sheath ll preferably of metal, provided with'an overlapping marginal flange l2 which may be spun down or forced over the edge of the plug or 50 button thereby affording an exposed surface l3 for the reception of an ornamental thumb tack ll.
above the marginal flange of the sheath, and the cylindrical side wall of the sheath is preferably The exposed portion of the plug or button I0 is convexly rounded so that it protrudes slightly 7 provided with ornamental knurling or the like, which not only facilitates its insertion but affords an attractive and ornamental appearance.
The base of the sheath in the form shown in Fig. 1 has fixed thereto a wood screw IS the head 6 of which is firmly secured by spot welding or in any other suitable manner, or in place of the wood screw a threaded stud bolt l6 may be employed or a tapered spike 11, depending upon the nature of the trim surface to which the device is 10 attached.
In use the stud will be permanently mounted in the intended position on the trim of a Window or door casing either by screwing or driving as the case may be, and thereafter the thumb tack 15 or similar fastening device may be easily inserted or removed as occasion may require, since the plug I0 is of relatively soft and porous material, so that the thumb tack may be repeatedly inserted thereinto without splitting, chipping, or otherwise impairing the holding power of the plug.
Although the device is intended primarily as a fitting for the attachment of curtain loops, it is obvious that it may be used under varying conditions where it is desirable to provide a relative- 1y soft impaling plug for the reception of a thumb tack or similar fitting.
I claim:
Means for removably supporting an object to a fixed base comprising an elongated fastening element pointed at one end and of a size and form adapted, in response to force, to enter the base for anchorage therewithin with one end of the element protruding exteriorly of the base surface, a second fastening element having a head from which is extended a pointed shank adapted to pierce the object to be supported with the head engageable therewith, a body of solid yieldable material interposed between the two fastening elements, and means affording a fixed connection between the protruding end of the firstnamed fastening element and the yieldable body at a point adjacent its face which is proximate to such protruding end whereby the opposite face of the body remains exposed with the interior of the yieldable body unobstructed for substantially the entire distance between the two faces aforesaid, the pointed shank of the second fastening element being free to enter and impale without interference the yieldable body for substantially the entire distance between the two faces aforesaid and be removably gripped thereby whereby to support the object in place thereagainst.
