z claims. (c1. 12s-(106i 'I'his invention is a heat generating and exchange apparatus, and more especially is an air heating and circulating furnace. f An object of the invention is to provide an ex- 5 tremely simple, low cost, practical, eilicient, economical and compact; fresh air conditioner and. circulator.
A further object is to provide an apparatus of this class which is easily installed, is light in l weight, is readily inspected and enables easy regig and interchange, as 'may be needed, 'of worn s. Y An additional object is to provide for a-semiautomatic and positive air flow in the unit, and l to so design, construct and arrange the hot gas conduits and the fresh air passageways as to.
most rapidly transfer the desired heat froml the hot gases to the cooler fresh air. 1
Also an object is to provide a forced draft/oevice in such a relation in the passageways of the unit that the heated air, or the cooled air, as .the case may be, is most eiectively both drawn through a system of conduits andrforce'd tota, main distributing column, an additional feature being to provide a hot gas chamber concentrically surrounding the said column. The invention consists in certain advancements in this art as set forth in the ensuing disclosure and`having, with the above, additional objects I0 and advantages as :hereinafter developed, and whose constructions, combinationazand details of means, and the manner of operation, mu be made manifest in the description of4 the he ewith i1- lustrative embodiment, it being under that l5 modincations, variationsand adaptations may be resorted to within the scope, principle and spirit of the invention as it is more directly claimed. hereinbelow. 'A
Figure 1- is a broken-away plan of the unit, and .Figure 2 is an axial', vertical-section thereof. This air conditioningv furnace or unit includes a suitably insulated, preferably rectangular, exterior shell 2 of suitable height; the capacity determines the general dimensions. The shell is closed at the lower part by an elevated bottom 3 having suitable fresh air inlets 4 to supply oxygen, for' fuel combustion at` burnersv 5 disposed above the bottom 3 and below a platform 6.
` The upper part of the shell "is closed by a drum head 1 of a hot air outlet drum chamber 20 formed above a shelf8; 'thedrum chamber being provided with a fume outlet 9 to a chimney or stack, Spaced inwardly from the side walls of the shell are manifold partitions III which extend.`
upward from the platform 6 to the shelf 8,'and
are preferably straight from front to back of the shell.
Fresh air is served -to the passages II and l2 between the side walls of the shell and the partitions I 0 by horizontal channels I3 cross con- 5 nected by a frontal channel I4. One. of the channelsis provided withan inlet -box I5 for fresh air which enters the box either directly or by way ofA any suitable air-cooler I6 for con-f ditioned air in warm or hot weather. w'Ihebox 1o I5 has a control damper I5 outwardly of its union with the cooler `I6 and thislatter has an inlet control damper I l Spaced inwardly of the partitions III is a preferably cylindrical, vertical wall I1 forming there- 15 vbustion `freely rise in the vertical combustion chamber I8 and both the inner and o uter walls III` and' I1 dissipate heat to the cool air outside of the walls I0A and inside the cylindrical wall I1 which forms a heated air down draft passageway` 22 toinlets 23 in the-foot of the air column 2l.
Means are provided to ause convection iiow of cool air from the passagesII-IZ overinto the down draft passageway 22-and this is done by way of a series ofV tunnel tubes 24 connecting the partitions I0 to the inner cylinder I1 so that air may readily flow vfrom the passage II--I2 to the passageway 22'. To accelerate such convection flow the tubes 2,4 are inclined upwardly tof ward the inner passageway 22, and being directly in the pathV of the up.i'lowinghot waste fumes from the burners-an eflicient heat exchange is secured, in coaction with the exchangeidue to `45 .the hot fume`engagement with the walls I0 Vand I1. It will thus .be seen that the'cool or coldrA air in passageways II and I2 receives heat frpm the vertical combustion chamber- I 8 and mves inwardly toward the' center chlumnv 2I in most 50 heated condition.
Means are provided to positivelyfinduct fresh` cold air by way of` the tunnel tubes 24 and-then to positively force the heated air up the column 2|. Such means includes a set of air propellers 55 25 and 2B fixed on a vertical shaft 21 hung by a head bearing 28 mounted in a cover 29 removably secured on the drum head 1. The lower end of the shaft 21 splines into a motor driven foot bearing 30 fixed on the upper end of the shaft of a suitable motor 3|. Thus by simply removing the cover 29 the shaft 21 and its propellers 25-26 can be pulled from the furnace as an Vorganized assembly, and can be as easily installed. A small housing 30 surrounds the bearing 30 to close oi the burner chamber between parts 3 and 6 about the shaft 21.
A feature of the invention is the provision of suitable distributor pipes from the drum chamber 20. Each pipe includes a quarter turn bend 33 disposed directly in the hot gas drum and tapping into the sides of the upper end of the air column 2| This enables the fresh air passing outV in the pipes 33 to be finally heated by the hot gas inthe drum before this goes out to the chimney. l
The rising hot air in the column space 2la is radially diverted at the top by means of -a concave inverted cone 34 formingY a part of the cover 29 of the space 2|a.
What is claimed is:
1. For air conditioning; a furnace including an outer casing having fresh air inlet means, a partition device spaced in from the casing to form an initial air heating space between itself and the casing and to receive air from said inlet means, a wall system spaced inwardly from the partition device to form therewith a vertical draft, hot gas conduit, fuel burners at the bottom of the conduit, a drum at the top. of and connected and openl to the conduit for hot gas therefrom, said wall system also forming an inner heat transfer and air supply chamber, a central, vertical-axis, up-draft fresh air discharge tube surrounded by the supply chamber and extending across the drum from top to bottom and having intake communication at its lower part with said supply chamber for heated air from said chamber, and fresh air distributor pipes leading from theY upper extended portion of the said tube and through the drum, without communication therewith, for heating contact with hot gas therein, and air flow means connecting the initial air space with ,the supply chamber. l
2. The furnace of claim 1, the said 'iiow means including a system of cross-tunnels through the said conduit.
