Description

A Nov. 12, 1940. v c. M. FARLEY 2,221,704
HOLDERI Filed'0ct. 11, 1959 INVENTOR ATTO RN EYS Patented Nov. 12, 1940 'UETED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims;
My invention relates to holders and more particularly to holders adapted for containing or holding a plurality of marbles or other objects of similar shape.
One of the principal objects of my invention is to provide a holder of the above described character whereby marbles or the like may be readily inserted therein and removed therefrom as desired.
Another object of my invention is to provide a holder of the above described character which is simple in construction, durable in use, efficient in operation and economical in manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claims and annexed drawing.
Referring to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of my invention, partly in section.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view of the con tainer cylinder illustrating the lower end con struction thereof.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the lower end of the container cylinder,
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view of the lower end of the container cylinder.
In practicing my invention, as illustrated in the drawing, I provide a base 5 having fixed thereto an upwardly extending rod 6, the upper end of the latter being disposed within the lower end of a container cylinder I as illustrated in 35 Figure 5 of the drawing.
The cylinder 'l is of an elongated configuration and provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending slots 8 formed in the peripheral face thereof. The slots 8 are defined by Cshaped walls 9 having closely related edges [0 whereby marbles H or the like inserted into said slots through the upper ends :thereof may be viewed from the side of the cylinder. The lower ends of the slots 8 are fashioned with widely spaced edges Z defimng therebetween a discharge passage l3 through which the marbles may be ejected from the cylinder as hereinafter more fully described.
The lower end of the cylinder 1 has attached thereto a disk 13 formed with openings l4 arranged in aligned relation with the slots 8. The diameters of the openings M are appreciably less than the transverse diameter of the slots 8 whereby the lowermost marbles in the slots will seat within said openings l4 and preclude discharge of the marbles through the passages 2. To release the marbles, the lowermost marbles are manually raised so as to -be substantially fiush with the upper face of the disk 3 whereby the marbles can be ejected by the fingers through 5 the respective passages IZ. It is to be understood, that the marbles are of lesser diameter than the transverse diameter of the slots whereby said marbles may be easily introduced into the slots from the upper ends of the latter and gravitated downwardly therein.
. From the foregoing, it will be apparent that I have provided .a simple and efficient form of holder whereby marbles and the like may be retained therein in collected condition and may be discharged therefrom as desired.
It is also obvious that the invention is not con fined to the herein described use therefor as it may be utilized for anypurpose to which it is adaptable. It is therefore to be distinctly understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described, as the same is only illustrative of the principles of operation, which are capa-ble of extended application in advance forms, and that the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a holder of the class described, an clongated solid cylinder having its periphery formed with a plurality of sphere receiving slots and with the walls defining said slots being of Cshaped configurations having closely related pairs of spaced edges to maintain spheres inserted Within said slots against lateral displacement therefrom and permit viewing of said spheres from the side of said cylinder, a disk secured to the cylinder adjacent the lower end of said slots and fashioned with openings registering with said slots for seatingly receiving the lowermost spheres carried within said slots, said cylinder formed with discharge passages communicating with said slots adjacent said disk whereby to permit said lowermost spheres to be discharged from said slots when released from seated condition with respect to said disk.
2. In a holder of the class described, an clonga.ted solid cylinder having its periphery formed with a plurality of sphere receiving slots and with the walls defining said slots being of C- shaped configurations having :closely related pairs 7 of spaced edges to maintain spheres inserted within said slots against lateral displacement therefrom and permit viewing of said spheres from the side of said cylinder, a disk secured to 55 the cylinder adjacent the lower end of said slots and fashoned with openings registering With said slots for seatingly receiving the lowermost spheres carried within said slots, said cylinder formed with discharge passages communicating with said slots adjacent said disk whereby to permit said lowermost spheres to be discharged from said slots When released from seated condition with respect to said disk, and a. supporting base attached to the lower end of said cylinder for maintaining the latter in vertical position with respect to the slots whereby to maintain said spheres in said slots in stacked relation, said base being spaced relative to said disk to permit insertion of the fingers between said disk and base to effect release of said spheres from seated condition on said disk.
