This invention relates to a novel record controlled machine and more particularly to a photographic recording machine controlled by a film control record having controlling representations,
such as light modifying areas, to condition light responsive means which in turn-are adapted to control photographic recording devices in accordance with the controlling representations disposed on the control record.
One of the objects of the present invention resides in the provision of photographic recording means controlled by and in accordance with the various light modifying characterizations disposed on the film control record to list photographically the indicia corresponding tothe said characterizations.
Another object of the present invention resides in the provision of photographic recording means controlled by and in accordance with the light modifying characterizations disposed on the film control record to form a suitable machine control record having control representations disposedthereon similar to those disposed on the first mentioned control record.
Another object of the present invention resides in the provision of photographic recording means controlled by and in accordance with the light modifying characterizations disposed on the film control record to form a photographic record of the indicia corresponding to the said characterizations and simultaneously therewith form a machine film control record having control representations disposed thereon similar to those of the first mentioned control record.

' Genereldescription Briefly and broadly the instant embodiment of the invention discloses, by way of illustration, means whereby control data representations ona film control ncordare analyzed by modifying}.
' rays of light to condition light ,l'llm nsive means which are effective to control the conductivity at 5 electronic control devices. Means are provided to be controlled by the latter to initiate differentially timed impulses at such times when the light rays are intercepted, or in other words when the data representations are sensed. The said impulses are impressed upon control circuits including electromagnetic control means whichv upon energization at differential times are effective to cause data indicating means to be positioned in accordance with the data sensed to rep- 5 resent the data, whereupon automatically photographing means are rendered operative to record the data represented by the indicating means. I
Shutter operating mechanisms are provided and operated at a timed interval after the sensing cycle to expose photographic record mediums through an objective included in the photographing means to the images of the data setup on the indicating means so as to record the data.
' Two sections are provided in the photographic recording device, one in which indicator bars bearing the data to be sensed are differentially presented to viewing apertures and photographil5 oally recorded; that is, the data represented by the coded representations on the machine control record are listed on opaque photographic paper or sensitized medium; in the second section indicator bars bearing code indicator spots are dif- 2 ferentially positioned within elongated openings and photographically recorded, that is, the data represented by the coded representations on the machine control record are reproduced in code on a film control record which may then be used 25 for a machine record control element.
Before describing the novel photographic recording device which forms the subject of the instant application, the photographic film control record will be first described.
Photographic control record Referring now to Fig. 1 wherein a fragmentary section of the film control record is shown, in this figure, the perforations designated 2| represent the feed apertures in the film. The spot representations or light modifying areas 22 are photographic machine control characterizations representing control indicia such as numerical data, and each set or group of numerical data comprises one or more control spot representations in such relative position upon the film record as to represent by their relative position thereon the numerical control value thereof when the film record is trans-illuminated in the machine. In practice, such numerical spot representations are shown on the film in index point relation in general conformance with the manner-in which index perforations are disposed or perforated record cards in the Hollerith accounting system. That is, the differential position of a control spot representation delineates the numerical value of a particular numeral. This will '-be clear by referring to the said figure, wherein it is noted that the data representations 22 represent the data photographically indicated at 23.
For a more detailed description of the film control record and certain applications of the described record such, for example, as a statistical system, reference should be made to the United States Patent No. 2,124,906.
While in the present embodiment only numerical spot representations have been shown, such representations might indicate a letter or the letters of the alphabet or other symbols, and the 65 phraseology with respect to the control representations, such as light modifying areas, in the appended claims is intended to cover any such index point position representations.
It will be understood that the completed film has photographic reproductions thereon at successively spaced intervals along the film as shown and that the reproductions are in extremely compact form; Accordingly, a large quantity of statistical information, or the like can be placed on 7 an extremely small controlling record. The films 'used may be negative or films which during development are transformed to positive. Th
film control record 20 is shown disposed on a supply spool or reel 25. The film is attached to a take-up spool 26,.and may be advanced by suitable driving connections cooperating with shafts i0 21 and 28 by means of suitable film feeding sprockets 29 and 30 secured to the said shafts, respectively, adapted to cooperate with the film feed apertures 2| in the film record. The film is fed past ananalyzing station comprising a scan- 16 ning opening or aperture 3| and trans-illuminated by the light rays emanating from the light source 32 and directed thereto by the condenser 33. ,The said scanning aperture is adapted to present an opening sumcient to permit the scan- 20 ning of a single transverse row of data or control representations only and is provided to extend transverselyacross the film. record to any desired extent so as to permit the desired sections on the film to be scanned. The reference char- 26 acter 34 designates light responsive means, such as photo-cells, which are disposed at the'analyzing station and adapted to be controlled by the light rays impinging thereon. Individual light conducting members 35 such as quartz rods suit- 30 ably supported by member 36, extend from each photo-cell to the analyzing station where they are positioned adjacent to one another along the scanning aperture. The spacing of the said rods along the scanning aperture is so arranged that 35 each rod is positioned opposite one of the columns of control representations disposed on the-film record. In this manner the light rays directed to the scanning aperture can be conducted to the associated photo-ce1ls to condition the latter for machine control operations during the film scanning or sensing operations.
The film advancing means and control means therefor comprise generally the clutch magnet 31 and associated pivoted armature 38 to which is secured a latch lever 39 normally engaging an extension 40 of the member 4| secured to shaft 28, and the clutch pawl 42 pivotally supported by member 4| and normally adapted to be disengaged from the clutch element 43 by means of the said latch lever. Upon energization of the said magnet the latch lever 39 is caused to release the pawl 42 to engage the clutch element 43 rotatably mounted on shaft 28 and rigidly secured to gear 44. The latter being in constant 55 mesh with gear 45 which is driven bysuitable means such, for example, as the drive pulley 46, secured to gear 45, motor 41 (Fig. 3) and the interconnecting driving connection 48. Thus it is seen that whenever the said motor and driving connections are operated and the magnet 3'! energized that shaft 28 is rotated and also gear 49 secured thereto to rotate gears 50 and 5|, the latter being secured to shaft 21, thereby rotating the said shaft, and causing the respective feed sprockets 30 and 29 to advance the film record past the analyzing or sensing station. The control representations 22 disposed on the film record are theneifective to modify or intercept the light rays emanating from the light source 32 thus blocking off the light rays to the individual and corresponding quartz rods 31 and associated photo-cells 34.
It should be mentioned that film supply control contacts C-l (Fig. 6) are provided and adapted to be closed by the suitably pivoted lever 7 52 as long as the film control record 20 is presented to the analyzing station, however, when the film supply is exhausted the said lever is adapted to swing to the left as viewed in Fig. 6 to permit the contacts CI to open, the purpose of which will be understood as. the description progresses. Also, suitably disposed contacts C-l are provided to be controlled by cam 52-0, which is'provided with a plurality of camming surfaces so as to operate the contacts at such times whenever the areas at which the differentially positioned control spots may appear are presented to the analyzing station, the purpose of which will be explained later.
Photographic recording means Referring now to Figs. '7,8,-and 9, the photographic recording means is shown to comprise, generally, two sections, the first, a photographic data recording or listing device section capable of listing photographically the data represented by the control spot representations disposed on the film control record 26, refer to Fig. 2 wherein a. fragmentary section of the said record sheet is shown having a plurality of listed items disposed thereon; the second, a photographic machine control element recording section capable of recording photographically coded spot repre sentations, in the form of light modifying areas, to represent the data represented by the representations disposed on the film control record 20. In other words, the latter section is equivalent to a film reproducer to form a duplicate film record of the original film control record. 20. The said sections are provided with a plurality of positionable indicator bars 55 and 56 to effect the data recording. The said bars 55 (Fig. 9) are provided with the individual characters, such as the numerical data indicated at 51, represented by the coded representations on the film control record Ml, whereas each ofthe bars 56 are provided with single code spot indicators represented at 58. The said ind cator bars are adapted to be positioned in synchronism with the ad vancement of the film control record 16 so that when recording upon the photographic records is about to be effected the said bars are positioned properly in accordance with the data representations sensed upon the said film control record. ' of the connecting link 65 to raise and lower the bail arm 62, pivotally supported to the said arm. The bail 64 is adapted to cooperate with individual indicator bar control levers only one being shown and indicated at 66 and pivotally supported by the shaft 61 to permit the said control lever to be positioned upwardly by means of the The upward movement of the indicator bar 55 is adapted to be interrupted by the rotatable stop pawl 10 whenever the pawl is released by the pivoted latch lever H. The said latch lever is connected to the armature 12 of magnet 73 by the link 16 and upon energization of the magnet is positioned to the right as viewed in Fig. 7 releasing the spring urged pawl 10 so as to be positioned in the path of the indicator bar 55 and thus interrupt further upward movement thereof. It is to be understood that all the individual indicator bars 55 and 56 suitably disposed in the guide comb 56a, are positioned in a. similar manner.
It was mentioned hereinabove that the said indicator bars 55 and 56 are positioned in synchronism with the advancement of the film control record 20, by this it is meant that the film control record advancing means described hereinabove and the indicator bars positioning means are operated in such timed relationship that when, for example, the control spot representations 22 disposed on the control record 20 (Figs. 1 and 4) in the 9" position are presented to the analyzing station, the group of indicator bars 55 are positioned so that the numeral characters "9 indicated at 51 are positioned to present the said numeral characters to the apertures or windows 15 (Fig. 9) and the group of indicator barsv 56 are positioned so that the spot indicators 58 disposed on the last mentioned bars are presented to the elongated openings 16 in a position corresponding to the 9 position as indicated in Fig. 9.
The means provided to effect the said synchronous operations are as follows: referring to Fig. 4, gear H is shown secured to shaft '18 and in constant engagement with gear 45 which it is remembered isconnected directly to the main driving means. In Fig. 7 clutch element 19 is shown secured to the said shaft 18 and obviously is rotated whenever the driving motor is operated. Rotatably mounted on this shaft is gear 80 which in turn meshes with gear 8| secured to shaft 60. Upon energization of the magnet 82, the armature 83 is effective to release the clutch pawl 84, pivotally supported by gear 80, so asto engage the rotating clutch element 18 thereby rotating gears 60 and 6|, shaft 60, cam 58 and the gearing generally indicated at 85 for purposes to be set forth later herein. The ratio of the described gearing is such that whenever, during the sensing cycle, a group or set of control representations 22 disposed on the film control record 28 are presented to the analyzing station the indicator bars 55 and 56 are adapted by means of the cam 58 and associated levers, during the said cycle, to present the numerical characters 51 progressively to the windows 15 and the spot indicators 58 to the openings 16 progressivel in the different positions as indicated in Fig. 9. The w ndows 15 and elongated openings 16 are provided in an opaque mask 86 which is positioned between the bank of indicator bars 55 and 56 and the record photographing means which will now be described.
The said photographing means consists of two sections, one capable of listing the items upon a photographic record or work sheet comprising the diagrammatically shown lens system 81, chamber 88 having a recording aperture 88 and the photographic record sheet 90 and its associated advancing means. The other being capable of recording differentially positioned conwindows 15 is directed or projected to the rel cording aperture 89 provided in the chamber 88, and the lens system 9I is so arranged that the coded representations appearing in the elongated openings I8 and the data appearing in the windows I and in addition thereto the supplemental data 96 provided directly above the said windows and apertures are projected to the elongated aperture 93 provided in the chamber 92 (see Figs. 8 and 9). The data to be listed and the 'code representations to be recorded which are set up by the indicator bars 55 and 96 are suitably illuminated by the elongated light sources designated 95 so that the images of the said representations are projected to the respective recording apertures 89 and 93 and the corresponding record mediums namely 99 and 94. In order to diflerentiate between the types of record mediums, it should be stated here that it is preferred that the record medium 99 comprises a photographic sheet or sensitized paperwhich is not transparent so that the record or work sheet formed by'listing the individual items thereon is suitable, upon development, for such known applications for which the standard typewritten copies or the like are employed; whereas it is preferred that the record medium 94 comprises a transparent photographic film record suitable and adaptable, when developed for machine controlling purposes such as described, for example, in the'above mentioned application.
The photographic paper 99 is shown disposed on a suitable supply reel 91 and is adapted to be fed through the supply rollers 98 and feed slot 99 to expose. the sensitized areas thereof at the recording aperture 89 of the chamber 88. Disposed between the supp y reel 91 and the takeup reel I99 and below the feed slot 99 are the paperfeeding rollers I9I and I92. The roller I9'I is secured to shaft I93 which also has attached thereto the ratchet wheel I94 adapted to be 0perated intermittently by the pawl mechanism I95 supported by the arm I96 to which lever I91 is pivotally attached. Thesaid lever is adapted to be positioned periodically (to be explained later) to operate the said pawl and ratchet device to advance the said paper sheet thereby presenting progressively the sensitized areas of the paper to the recording position.
A suitable flexible driving connection is provided for the take-up reel in the form of the belt I98, pulley I99 fixed on shaft H9 and pulley III secured to shaft I93. Control contacts 0-2 are also provided and as long as the said sensitized paper is fed to the recording position or adapted to be closed by means of the pivoted control lever H2 which is provided with an extension II8 adapted to engage the paper 99 by extending through a slot provided in the member I I4 forming part of the throat through which the paper is fed.
The transparent. film record 94 is disposed on the supply reel- "5 and fed to the recording position at aperture 93 intermittently by the feed sprockets H8 and III fixed on shafts H8 and H9 respectively, and is then rewound on the take-up reel I29. Associated with the said shafts is the gearing generally designated I2I which in turn is driven by gear I22 provided with a cam plate I23 which is part of a Geneva drive device, the other part being a cam disk as indicated at I25 which is secured to shaft I24 (Figs. 10 and 5 11). Also secured to the shaft I24 is the gear segment I25-a adapted to cooperate with gear I22 when the Geneva device comprising cam plate I28 and cam disk I25 are unlocked. Thus it should be understood that as shaft 124 ro- 0 tates, the rotating cam disk I25 is adapted periodically and intermittently to control the rotation of gear I22 and the associated gearing I2I to advance the feed sprockets H8 and II'! thereby advancing the film record 94 sufilciently to present a completely new area of the film to the recording position at the aperture 98. The rotation of shaft I29 is controlled by magnet I28 and upon energization thereof causes the armature I21 to be withdrawn from the path of the pawl I28 pivotally mounted on member I29 which in turn is fixed to shaft I24 thereby engaging the clutch element I 39 secured to shaft I8I' which is positioned in' axial alignment with shaft I24. Shaft I3I (Fig. 8) is adapted to be rotated by 25 means of the gear I32 secured thereto and cooperating. with the gear train generally designated 85.
By virtue of the described gearing arrangement the feeding of the said record mediums is so effected synchronously with respect to the positioning of the indicator bars 55 and 58 and-the feeding of the control film record 29, since the driving means for all the said elements aredirectly connected to the main driving gear 45 (Fig. 4). The intermittent advancing of the record mediums is effected after the seaming cycle, that is, immediately after the group of control spot representations on the film control record 29 have been presented to the analyzing 40 station. Shortly before the advancement of the said record mediums is effected and immediately after the scanning of the film control record, the shutter mechanism, which may be of any well known type, associated with the lens system 45 indicated at 81 and 9I are adapted to be operated by means of the control rods I33 and I34 respectively.
Provision is made to advance the record sheet so and trip the shutter mechanism of the lens system 81 by means of the cams I and I38 (Figs. 8 and 19) secured to shaft I3I. After the indicator bars 55 and 58 have been raised to their respective positions, or in other. words, upon completion of the sensing cycle. the control rod 55 I33 which'is adapted to ride on the cam I85 is adapted to drop off the high point of the said cam to trip the shutter mechanism thereby permitting the data set up on the bars 55 to be recorded photographically on the record sheet 99.
Immediately after exposure of the said record sheet it is adapted to be spaced to the next position by means of the cam I 36. The high spot of said cam is effective to position the pivoted arm 65 I31 to the left as viewed in Fig. 7 thereby urging the lever I91 and pawl I forwardly to advance the ratchet I94, feed roller III and the record sheet 99, thus presenting an unrecorded portion of the sensitized paper to the aperture 89 for ex,- 70
posure. 1
Shaft I24 is also provided with a cam element I38 to trip the shutter mechanism of the lens system 9I by permitting the control rod I34 to drop off the high point of the cam at the same 75 time the shutter mechanism of lens system 81 is tripped by rod I33.
It should be mentioned at this time that control contacts C-3 are provided to be closed by the film record 94 as long as the film record is advanced to the recording position due to the pivoted control lever I39, however, when the film supply is exhausted the said lever is adapted to rotate in a counterclockwise direction thus permitting the C3 contacts to be opened, the purpose of which will be explained in connection with the circuit diagram and operation of the machine which will now be described.
Operation of the machine Referring now to Fig. 12a and Fig. 12b the op erations of the machine will be described in connection with the circuit diagram therein. Upon closure of the switches I50 the motor 41 and light sources 32 and 95 are energized. Operation of the motor eifects rotation of gears 45 and 44 and clutch element 43, also gear 11, shaft 18 (Fig. 4), and clutch element 19 (Fig. 7). Now upon depression of the start key closing contacts I 5|, a circuit is completed from conductor I52 to normally closed contacts I53 of the stop key, contacts I5I and coil of relay RI to conductor I54, energizing relay RI. A holding circuit for the said relay v-is established by the contacts R-Ia which are now closed and is as follows: conductor I52, contacts I53, contacts CI, C2, C--3, and R-Ia, coil of relay R-I, conductor I54. The said relay now remains energized until the stop key is operated or any one of the record medium control contacts CI to C3 are opened -due to the record medium supply being exhausted. Connected in parallel to the coil of relay RI is the control magnet 3! which is en'- ergized at the same time as the said relay and maintained energized by the described holding circuit,
Energization of magnet 3! (Fig. 4) releases the pawl 42 to permit engagement thereof with the rotating clutchelement 43 to drive shaft 28 and feed sprocket 30 and gears 49, 50 and 5I and shaft 21 and feed sprocket 29 thereby advancing the transparent film record 20 to the sensing station designated 3|. The differentially positioned data representations 22 (Fig. 1) which in effect are light modifying spots or areas are then, upon presentation to the sensing aperture 3|, effective to intercept the light rays emanating from the light source 32. Assume that all the different record mediums, namely, film 20 shown in Fig. 4, and film 94 and the photographic paper 90 shown in Fig. 5, are all properly positioned and aligned in the said associated advancing means before the switches I50 are operated. Upon operation of the said switches the said light sources are energized. At this time no control spots are presented to the sensing or analyzing station shown in Fig. 4. Therefore the light rays are impinged upon the quartz rods 35 and the associated photo-cells 34 rendering the said cells operative. The individual amplifiers associated with the photo-cells arranged so that the amplifying systems are conditioned at such times so that substantially no current flows in the output circuits thereof and the relays A--I to A9 connected therein. It is seen now that this condition exists at all times at the analyzing station except whenever the con trol spots on the film 20 are presented thereto to intercept the light rays impinging on the photo-cells. At such times, that is, when the light rays are intercepted, the individual amplifiers are rendered operative, in the sense that current is permitted to flow in the output circuits thereof to energize the corresponding relay coils connected therein. The circuit arrangements between the photo-cells and electronic amplifier devices are well known in the art so that further description is not deemed necessary.
It is understood now that whenever the control spots or data representations shown on the film 20 in Fig. 1 are presented to the analyzing station of the machine, detection or sensing thereof is effected by means of the light rays intercepted thereby and thus conditioning the corresponding amplifying systems to become conductive thereby energizing the associated relays of the group A--I to A--9 connected in the output circuits thereof. Continuous feeding of the film control record is effected as long as magnet 31 remains energized. Upon energization of any of the relays A-I to A9 operation of the associated contacts A-Ia. to A9a is efiected to establish circuits from conductor I52 to contacts C-4 (closed at each control spot position by means of the associated cam 52-a), contacts A-Ia to A-Sa, conductors I56 to the corresponding control magnets I3 and I3--a and conductor I54 to energize the said magnets.
Now assume that both the switches I51 and I58 are closed and it is seen that the magnets 82 and I26 are energized as long as relay RI remains energized by means of the associated operated contacts R,Ib. Energization of the said magnets renders operative the control elements of the photographic recording section; magnet 82 causes pawl 84 to be released to engage the rotating clutch element I9 thereby operating the indicator bars 55 and 56 in synchronism with the advancement of the film control record 20 to the analyzing station, and in addition thereto by means of the gearing shaft I3I is rotated to effect operation of the lens system 81 and the feeding means for the photographic paper 90, the operation thereof being in timed relation with the presentation of the control spots to the sensing means and the displacement of the indicator bars 55 and 56. Energization of magnet I26 releases pawl I28 to engage the rotating clutch element I30 disposed on shaft I3I to drive shaft I24, the rotation of which is adapted to operate the lens system 9| and advancing means of the film 94, of the film recording or reproducing section of the machine. It was mentioned hereinbefore that the operation of the said lens system and advancing means for the film and photographic paper occurred simultaneously provided both the switches I51 and I58 are closed. It is-obvious that by opening switch I58 the film reproducing mechanism is rendered inoperative. If it is desired to render inoperative the said film reproducing mechanism, then the switch I59 should be closed to shunt the contacts C-3 controlled by the film record 94.
It should now be understood that upon energization of the control magnets I3 and/or magnets I3a by means of the differentially timed impulses initiated by the contacts AIa to A9a and contacts 0-4, the corresponding stop pawls I0 are released to interrupt the movements of the indicator bars 55 and 56 at such positions so that the bars 55 present the numerical data corresponding to the sensed data representations on film record 20 to the windows I5 so that the recording thereof is effected upon the photographic paper 80. In this manner the data sensed on is film record ill-is adapted to' be listed photographically on the sensitized paper medium I. as shown in Fig. 2. The bars 58 are positioned so that the indicator spots 58 are diflerentially positioned within the elongated openings 16 so as to represent by their positions the data sensed on the film record 20. Upon exposure oi the differentially positioned spots 58, and the data set up in the windows to the transparent photo 10 graphic film 94, a machine control film record'is adapted to be produced bearing diflerentially positioned control spots or representations which are in efleet the light modifying areas for controlling the conditioning of light responsive means and operations of a machine similarly as described hereinabove. In fact, in accordance with the example chosen, the machine control film record produced by exposure of the film 84 is identical to the film control record 2. shown in 20 Fig. 1.
" While there has been shown and described and pointed out the fundamental novel features of the invention as applied to a single modification, it will be understood that various omissions and substitutions and changes in the form and deindicated by the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is as follows:
a 1. A record controlled recording machine for "recording character images upon a light sensitive film in accordance with the data representations formed and sensed on the control records comprising an objective andintermittent film moving means, shutter means to control the ex- 1 posure of the light sensitive film through the objective to the characters, means for feeding a film control record bearing a plurality of data control spots variably positioned longitudinally on the said control record, the difierent positions of the control spots denoting the values of the data representations, means for sensing the data control spots comprising a source of light rays and light responsive means controlled by the light rays modified by the said control spots, means controlled by the light responsive means including means for converting the sensed data control spots into characters represented by the said control spots, and means connected with the last mentioned controlled means for controlling the said shutter and film moving means to efiect exposure of the light sensitive film to the character images, while the film is stationary in a predetermined time relationship with the sensing of the said control spots.

A record controlled recording machine for recording indicated data images upon a light sensitive film in accordance with the data representations formed on the control records comprising an objective and intermittent film moving means, means to control the exposure of the light sensitive film through the objective to the indicated data, means for feeding a film control record bearing a. plurality of control data spots variably positioned longitudinally on the said control record, the different positions of the control spots denoting the values of the data representations, means for sensing the data control spots comprising a source of light rays and light responsive means controlled by the light rays modified by the said control spots, means for indicating selectively and graphically the data rep- 7: resented by the sensed control spots having means controlled solely and directly by the light responsive means for controlling the selective operations of the indicating means, and means connected with the said indicating means for controlling the said film moving and exposure control means 5 to eflect exposure of the light sensitive film to the said indicated data images, while the film is stationary, in a predetermined time relationship with the sensing of the said control spots.

A record controlled recording machine for 10 recording indicated data images upon a light sensitive film in accordance with the data represent-ations formed on the control records comprising an objective and intermittent 'film moving means, means to control the exposure of the light 15 sensitive film through the objective to the indicated data, means for feeding a film control record bearing a plurality of data control spotsvariably positioned longitudinally on the said control record, the different positions of the con- 2 trol spots denoting the values of the datarepresentations, means for sensing the data control spots at different times comprising a source of light rays and light responsive means controlled at different times by the light rays modified by 25 the said control spots, means controlled by the light responsive means for initiating differentially timed impulses at such times when the control spots are eflective to modify the light rays, means controlled by the initiated timed impulses in- 30 eluding means for indicating selectively and graphically the data represented by the. sensed control spots, andmeans connected with the indicating means for controlling the said film moving means and exposure control means to eiIect 35 exposure of the light sensitive film to the said indicated data images, while the film is station-' ary, in a predetermined time relationship with the sensing of the said control spots.

Arecord controlled recording machine for recording indicated data images upon a light sensitive film in accordance with the data representations formed on the control records comprising an objective and intermittent film moving means, means to control the exposure of the light sensitive film through the objective to the indicated data, means for feeding a film control record bearing a plurality of data control spots variably positioned longitudinally on the said control record, the difierent positions of the control spots denoting the values of the data representations, means for sensing the data control spots comprising a source of light rays and light responsive mean-s controlled by the light rays modified by the said control spots, electron discharge means controlled by the light responsive means for initiating control impulses, data indicating means and control circuits therefor, said control circuits energized by the control impulses for controlling the indicating means to indicate the data represented by the sensed control spots, and means connected with the said indicating means for controlling the said film moving and exposure control means to effect exposure of the light sensitive film to the said indicated data images, while the film is stationary, in a predetermined time relationship with the sensing of the said control spots.

A record controlled recording machine for recording selected indicla images upon a light sensitive filmin accordance with the data representations formed on the control records comprising an objective and intermittent film moving I means, means to control the exposure of the light sensitive film through the objective to the selected indicia, means for feeding a film control record bearing a plurality of data control spots variably positioned longitudinally on the said record, the different positions of the control spots denoting the values of the data representations, means for sensing the data control spots comprising a source of light rays and light responsive means controlled by the light rays modifled by the said control spots, means controlled by the light responsive means including means for indicating selectively the data represented by the sensed control spots, means for indicating selectively diflferently positioned control marks corresponding to the sensed control spots, and means connected with the said indicating means for controlling the said film moving and exposure control means to efiect exposure of the light sensitive film to the selected indicia images comprising the said indicated data and control mark images, while the film is stationary, in a predetermined time relationship with the sensing of the said control spots.

A record controlled recording machine for recording indicia images upon a light sensitive medium in accordance with the data representations formed on the control records comprising an objective, means to control the exposure of the light sensitive medium through the objective to the indicia, means for feeding a film control record bearing a plurality of data control spots variably positioned longitudinally on the said control record indififerent columns, the difierent positions of the control spots in the said columns denoting the values of the data representations, means for sensing the data control spots comprising a source of light rays and light responsive means controlled by the light rays modified by the said control spots, a plurality of indicia indicating elements, means controlled by the light responsive means for conditioning selectively the said elements for indicating the diiferent positioning of the control spots in various columns to correspond to the sensed control spots, and means connected with the indicating elements for controlling the first mentioned means to effect exposure of the light sensitive medium to the indicia images in a predetermined time relationship with the sensing of the said control spots.

A record controlled recording machine for recording indicated data images upon a light sensitivemedium in accordance with the data representations formed on the control records comprising an objective, means to control the exposure of the light'sensitive medium through the objective to the indicated data, a sensing station, means for feeding a control record having diiIerentially positioned data representations thereon past the sensing station, means at the sensing station tor sensing atdifl'erential times the data representations including means for initiating control impulses at the difierent times the data representations are sensed, a plurality of data indicating elements, means -i'or positioning the said elements in timed relationship with the sensing of the data representations, control means responsive to the said control impulses. for maintaining the positioned indicating elements in a fixed position for indicating the data at a predetermined point corresponding to the sensed data representations, and means connected with the positioning means for controlling the first mentioned means including means for efiecting exposure of the light sensitive medium to the said indicated data images upon completion of the sensing of the said data representations.

A record controlled recording machine for recording indicated data images upon a light sensitive medium in accordance with the data representations formed on the control records comprising an objective, means to control the exposure of the light sensitive medium through the objective to the indicated data, a sensing station, means for presentingsuccessively thereto groups of coded data representations, means for sensing each group of data representations during a predetermined timed interval, a plurality of data indicating elements and control means therefor controlled by the sensing means for selectively conditioning the indicating elements,
during the said timed interval, to indicate the data at a predetermined point corresponding to the data representations sensed, and means connected with the data indicating elements for controlling the first mentioned means including means rendered operative at the end of the said predetermined timed interval upon completion of the sensing operation to effect exposure of the light sensitive medium to the said indicated data images.

A photographic recording device for recording indicated data images upon a light sensitive medium comprising an objective, means to control the exposure of the light sensitive medium through the objective to the indicated data, a plurality of data indicating elements, individual control means for conditioning each data indicating element to represent predetermined data including individual control circuits therefor, means to energize selectively the said control circuits to represent predetermined data thereby controlling the said control means and conditioning or the data indicating elements to represent the predetermined data, and means connected with the said control means for controlling the first mentioned means to eiiect exposure of the light sensitive medium to the selected data images.
