3 Claims.

This invention relates to a brush of the type having a wire bristle carrying member of resilient material, the general object of the invention being to provide improved means whereby 5 the said member may be easily and quickly removed from the brush back and just as easily put back in place, thus rendering it easy to remove the bristlecarrying member to clean or sterilize the same and then put the member in place on the front face of the back part of the brush.

The invention also consists in certain other features of construction, combination and arrangement of the-several parts to be hereinafter fully described illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Fig. 1 is an edge view of the improved brush.

Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view with the bristle carrying member removed and with parts in section.

Fig. 3 is a section on line 3- 3 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.

Fig. 5 is a sectional view through one of the slide members and the pronged arcuate member.

Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of portion of a modification.

Fig. 7 is a sectional view of one of the slide members of the modification and its prong carrying member.

In this drawing, the letter A indicates the back of the brush which is formed with an elliptical recess B in one face thereof, the walls of which are undercut to provide the channe1 a, for receiving the edges of the bristle carrying member C which is of rubber or the like and the bristles c are of wire or other stiff material.

In carrying out the invention, a pair of oppositely arranged arcuate shaped members I, having the prongs or teeth 2 on their outer edges, is provided for removably holding the bristle carrying member in position. These members i are attached adjacent their centers, to the channel slides 3, as shown at 4. These slides operate in a transverse groove 5 formed in the bottom of the recess. A projection 6 is located adjacent the inner end of each slide 3 and these projections engage the forwardly diverging slots 1 in a Y shaped plate 8 in the recess. This plate is guided for sliding movement by a projection 9 on its front end passing through the guide bracket in the recess. A block H is slidably arranged in a longitudinally extending slot l2 in the rear part of the bottom of the recess and the threaded part of a rod l3 passes through a threaded hole in the block, the rod passing through the handle of the brush and having a knob l3 attached to its outer end which projects from the end of thehandle. A collar M on the inner part of the rod acts to hold the rod in place by engaging a wall of the slot I2. The rod passes through a sleeve [4 in the brush handle.

Thus by turning the rod in one direction, the slides 3 are moved outwardly by the movement of the plate 8 so that the arcuate members I will engage edge portions of the bristle carrying member to hold the same in the channels a. Then when it is desired to remove the bristle carrying member, the rod is turned in the opposite direction so as to move the arcuate members inwardly to release the bristle carrying member so the same can be removed from the recess. I

In the modification shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the rod l5 extends transversely through the brush back and has its end portions threaded in opposite directions and these end portions engage the nut members [6 to which the arcuate members I are attached. Thus by turning the rod these arcuate members will be moved inwardly or outwardly. The nut members operate in a transverse slot H in the bottom ofv the recess and one end of the rod extends through a side edge of the brush back where it receives a knob It, the rod being held against longitudinal movement by the bushing l9 fastened to the said edge portion of the back.

Thus by turning therod or shaft 15 in one direction or the other the arcuate members are moved outwardly to grip the bristle carrying member, or inwardly to release said member.

Instead of having the shaft or rod 15 extend through one side edge of the brush back, as shown in Fig. 6, the shaft or rod may have its ends journaled in the back and the knob attached to the center thereof, this knob extending through a slot in the brush back, so it can be manipulated from the rear face of the back to turn the shaft.

It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.

It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided such 55 2- changes fall within the scope of the appended claims .What I claim is:

1. In abrushhavingarecessinthefrontface of its back part and a bristle carrying member having edges, means in said recess for removably holding the edges of the member in the recess comprising a pair of clamping members. slides in the recess and connected to said clamping members, a rotary shaft projecting from a part of the, brush and means for moving the slides in a direction to cause the clamping members to grip the bristle carrying member when the shaft is turned in one direction and to cause the slides to move the clamping members to releasing position when the shaft is turned in an opposite direction.

2. A brush of the class described comprising a handle and back part, the back part having an elliptical recess in the front face thereof, a bristle carrying member having its edges fitting in the recess, a pair of arcuate members having teeth on their outer edges for engaging the edges of the bristle carrying member, a sliding member attached to each arcuate member and guided in the races, a plate supported for sliding movement in the recess and having diverging slots therein. projections on the twosliding members engaging the slots, a shaft through the end of the handle and extending into the recess and having a threaded part in the recess, a nut through which the threaded part of the shaft passes and means for attaching the nut to the plate.

A brush of the class described comprising a handle andbackpart,saidbackparthavinga recess in the front face thereof, a bristle carrying member having edges fitting in the recess, a pair of elongated members in said recess for clamping the edges of the bristle carrying member in the recess, a slide connected to each clamping mem-' ber, guide means for the slides. a shaft Journaled in the back part and having oppositely threaded end portions engaging the slides, said shaft when rotated in one direction causing the slides to move the clamping members into clamping posiflon and when rotated in an opposite direction causin the slides to move the clamping members to releasing position'and a handle on the shaft.
