Serial No. 79,95 3 3 claims.- (01. 98-106) 7 My invention relates to a register for hot and cold air and the objects of my invention are:
First, to provide a register for hot or cold air in which approximately half of the area of the register may be closed while the other half remains open or the whole of the area may be'closed or the whole remain open;
Second, to provide a register of this class in which the upper half of the register may be open or closed independently of the lower half or vice versa;
Third, to provide a register of this class with air current directing louvers arranged to direct the air upwardly in the upper half of the register and louvers arranged to direct the air downwardly in the lower half of the register;
Fourth, to provide a register of this class with means for controlling the flow of air through any portion of the register;
Fifth, to provide a register of this class in which all of the air passing through the register may be directed either upwardly or downwardly as desired;
Sixth, to provide a register of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, durable, efficient, and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear thereinafter, my invention consists of cer tain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and tothe characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my register with the shutters closed; Fig. 2 is a sectional view from the line 2-2 f Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the upper half of the register from the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view from the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawing:
The main frame member I, upper louver frame 2, upper louvers 3, lower louver frame 4, lower louvers 5, upper shutter 6 and lower shutter l constitute the principal parts and portions of my hot and cold air register.
It is preferred to place my register in a position six to eight feet high in the wall of the room in which the heat is to be controlled and positioned with the louvers for directing the air upwardly in the upper side and for directing the air downwardly in the lower side as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
The main frame member l is preferably rectangular in shape and'provided with two rectana gular openings la and lb leaving a central bar lo and this is secured over the opening for admitting either hot or cold air to the room from any air conditioning system. In Fig. 2 I have shown it in connection with furnace conductor F, which, however, is no part of my invention. It is secured over the opening by means of screws ld as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. Secured on the backside of the main frame member I around the upper opening la in the frame and on the back side is an upper louver frame 2, which is rectangular in shape and extends inwardly some distance as shown best in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing. It isprovided with outwardly extending flange portions 2a which are preferably spotwelded, thus providing a frame approximately one-half inch in depth surrounding theopening la and there is a similar frame 4 surrounding the opening lb and both of these frames are secured to the central bar lc by means of extending flanges as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawing. Secured in the upper louver frame la, are a plurality of louvers 3 which extend longitudinally of the opening la and are positioned on the incline so as to direct the air upwardly as it passes into the room, as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawing. Positioned in the lower louver frame 4 are similar louvers 5 which are positioned to direct the air downwardly into the room as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawing. Hinged to the lower back side of the upper louver frame 2 by means of hinges 6a is the upper shutter 6 and hinged to the lower louver frame 4 at the lower back side is the lower shutter 'l by means of hinges 1a. Secured to the one end of the shutter 6 is a shutter lever 61) which extends outwardly through an opening left in the shutters for the purpose, which extends outwardly past the front side of the main frame member I. The bar lc serves as a stop for the downward movement of said lever and the second louver from the bottom forms a stop for the upward movement of the lever 6b, and secured to the shutter 1 preferably at the opposite end of the frame from the lever 6b is another lever lb which operates the lower shutter l in the same manner as the lever 6b operates the shutter B as hereinbefore described.
It will be here noted that the shutters 6 and l when closed rest against the back side of the louver frame 2 and 4 when closed and form a close fit against the back edge while when the shutters are open they stand at a position slightly inclined from the horizontal as shown by dotted line in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination, and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination, and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention, the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:'
1. In an 'air conditioning register, a frame member provided with two separate openings therethrough, separate shutter means associated with said openings for independently opening and closing said openings, louvers positioned in said opening between the front face thereof and said shutters, and the louvers in one opening being positioned on an incline from the horizontal in one direction and in the other opening posi-.
tioned on an incline in the opposite direction in the opposite opening.
2. In an air conditioning register, a frame member positioned vertically in the wall of a room to be conditioned provided with an upper opening in the upper portion and a lower opening in the lower portion thereof, shutters positioned on the back side of said frame over said upper and lower openings operable independently of each other, louvers in the upper opening between the face of said frame and said shutter arranged and positioned to direct air coming therethrough upwardly in the upper opening, and louvers oppositely positioned in the lower opening for directing the air downwardly through the lower opening.
3. In an air conditioning register, a frame member provided with two separate openings therethrough, separate shutter means associated with said openings for independently opening and closing said openings, louvers positioned in said openings between the front face thereof and said shutters, the louvers in one opening being positioned on an angle in one direction and in the other opening positioned on an angle in the opposite direction.
