Description

Oct. 22, 1940. E. VEAU CURTAIN SUPPORT Filed Sept. 13. 1958 Patented Oct. 22, 1940 UNITED STATES' PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims This invention relates to a support for sliding curtains of the type wherein slides in the nature of balls or rollers are arranged in a longitudinally slotted tubular rod or pole and provided with depending hooks engageable with the upper edge of the curtain, whereby the latter is suspended for being readily drawn to one-side. e
The primary object of the presentinvention is to provide an improved curtain support of the above kind, particularly useful in suspending shower bath curtains in surrounding relation to a bathtub.
A more specific object of thepresent invention is to provide a curtain support of the above character, wherein simple and efflcient means is provided for mounting the curtain rod and sustaining the weight of the latter and the curtain in an emcient manner, as well as providing for convenient mounting and dismounting of the m curtain rod.
With the above objects in view, the present invention consists in the novel form. combina-` tion and arrangement of parts hereinafter more ully described, shown inthe accompanying u drawing and claimed.
In` the drawing:
Figura 1 is a view, partly in front elevation and partly broken away and in section,. of a curtain support constructed in accordance with the pres- :o ent invention and illustrated as it appears in use.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Flgure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse section on the plane of line 3-3 of Figure 2. I
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view partly in side 3:, elevation and partly in section, showing details of the mounting means illustrated in Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a section on line 6-8 of Figure 1.
- Figure 7 is a view similar to Flgure 3 illustrat- 40 ing a modified form of curtain rod. i
Figure 8 is a view similar to Figure 4 of -the construction shown in Figure 7.
Figura 9 is a. view similar to Figure 5 of the embodiment of Figure 7; and
45 Figure 10 is a section on line III-ID of Figure 9.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the present curtain support includes a suitable tubular curtain rod 5 having a slot 6' extending longitudinally therein from end to end of the same. Ar-
ranged in the tubular rod 5 are a plurality of slides 'l having depending hooks 8 or the like projecting outwardly through the slot 6 and adapted for engagement with the upper edge of u the curtain 9 to be Suspended. The rod i may be of circular form in-cross section and provided with the slot E at the bottom as illustrated in Flgures 1 to 6 inclusive, in which case the slides 'l are in the nature of balls loosely fltting within this tubular rod 5. However, as illustrated in '5 Figures 7 to 10 inclusive, the rod E may be in the nature of a vertically flattened tube having the slot 6 in one side thereof, in which case the slides 'E are in the nature of rollers arranged to ride on the lower wall of the rod and iournaled o upon laterally directed upper ends of the books 8 or the like. The rod 5 is shown of U-shape 'so that the curtain 9 may be Suspended to depend in surrounding relation to the outer side and the ends of a bathtub as required in connec- 15 tion with showr bath curtains.
In accordance with the present invention, simple and eflicient means is provided for eflectively removably supporting the curtain rod 5 in proper position with relation to and above the bathtub. As shown, each end of the rod 5'is slidably fltted in a socket or sleeve member o of a mounting bracket which includes a base flange il apertured for reception of screws I! or the like whereby the bracket may be securely fastened to the adjacent vertical wall at the inner side of the bathtub. Obviously, the sleeve or sccket ll will be of circular form when used in connection with the rod ot Figure 1, and will be of flattened, somewhat elliptical form when used in connection with the rod of Figure 7. In order to removably secure the ends of the rod in the sockets or sleeves lil of the respective end miounti'ng brackets, I preferably provide headed pins I! extending through vertical slots M in the socket a or sleeve members o and provided on their outer ends with knobs IS. Also, the ends of the curtain rod are provided with bayonet slots IC whose upper horizontal portions open through the end edges of the rod to receive the pins IS when the 40 rod is inserted in the sleeves or sockets o of the mounting bracket and when the pins I! are disposed at the top of the slots II. By this arrangement, the pins !5 may be lowered in the slots !4 and the inner vertical portions of the bayonet slots IB after the ends of the rod 5 are inserted in the sockets or sleeves o of the mounting v bracket, whereby the ends of the rod are efiecthesleevesorsocketsilotthemomting brackets. Oi course, the slides 'I with their hooks I will be inserted in the rod from either or both ends thereof prior to engagement oi' the ends oi' the rod into the sockets or sleeves il oi' the mounting brackets.
while the ends of the rod are eirectively attacbed to the adjacent wall as described above, the curtain rod must be supported against sagging at a point intermediate the ends thereot so as to eflectively sustain the weight of the rod and the curtain suspended i'rom the hooks I. In order to accomplish this without in any way interfering with the movement oi the slides 'I necessary when drawing the curtain to one side or back to its surrounding relation to the bathtub, I provide a center support consisting ot an elongated member l'i in the form o! a rod or chain having means II to attach the upper end thereoi' to the ceiling o! the room and pro vided at its lower end with a split clasp i! adaptedtopartiallyembracethe rod lwitha strong z ipping engagement with the latter. The clasp i! has the ends ot its iaws spaced apart adjacent but at opposite sides oi the slot 8 intherodlsoastonot interferein any way with movement oi' the slides il and the curtain suspended therei'rom. While the clasp I! will eflectively maintain its engagement with the rod in opposition to the weight ot the latter and the curtain, said rod may be i'orcibly manually disengaged !rom the clasp whenever it is desired todismounttherodandthecurtain supported therefrom.
Prom the above description, it is believed that the construction as well as the advantages of the present invention, will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art. Minor changes in the specific construetion and .m embodiment illustrated and described, are contemplated within the spirit and scope o! the invention as claimed. While the complete rod is not illustrated in connection with the embodimentotmgures'ito9incluive,itwil1beunderstood that the same may be of general U-shape asillustrated withrespecttotherodinthe embodiment of Figures 1 to 6 nclusive.
What I claim as new is:
i. A quickly demountable support tor sliding shower bath curtains, comprising a curtain rod of U-shape in plan providing an intermediate portion of a length substantially equal to the length oi the shower bath tub and long end portions extending at right angles to said intermediate portion and ot a length substantially equal -to the width o! said tub tor supporting the curtains in surrounding relation to the ends and outer side of said tub, means to detachably mount the rod including brackets adapted to be secured to a vertical wall, detachable connections between said brackets and the ends of said -rod, and vertical elongated suspension means for the intermediate portion ot the rod having means to attach the upper end of the same to a ceiling and means to detachably engage the curtain rod at the lower end thereof. 4
2. In a support for sliding shower bath or like curtains. a tubular curtain rod, and means to detachably mount the ends of the rod upon a vertical wall including a sleeve adapted ior snug reception ot the adjacent end of the rod and having an apertured attaching base flange, said sleeve being provided with a vertical elongated slot extending transversely oi the axis of the sleeve, a headed pin slidable in. said slot and having an Operating knob on its outer end, and bayonet slots in the ends of the rod opening through the end edges thereot !or reception ot said pins when arranged at the upper ends of said vertical slots of the sleeve, the inner vertical portions ci' said bayonet slots being arranged to aiine with the vertical slots of the sleeves when the ends of the rod are inserted in' said sleeves so that iowering oi' the headed pins will efl'ect a lock connection between the sleeves and the ends of the rod.
