Description

H. R.-ATWO0D. Tail-Pin for Drays.
No. 221,902. Patent ed Nov. 25, 1879.
NFETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON a C UNITED STATES PATENTOFFIGE.
HENRY R. ATWOOD, or CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMMENTIN TAIL-PINS FOR DRAYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221,902, dated November 25, 1879; application filed April 25, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Bron A'rwoon, a resident of the town of Chelsea, county of SuEtolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tail-Pins for Drays, 850.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference bcing had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
This invention is designed for overcoming a difficulty heretofore encountered by draymen and others having occasion to transport goods in wagons the rear .ends of which are provided with. iron pins for preventing the goods from slipping off at said point. The difliculty encountered is that of withdrawing the aforesaid pins froin the holes in which they are placed, not by reason of the holes being made too small, but because of the shifting of the load toward the rear, which is the lowest part of the wagon, and the consequent pressure of the said load against the pins.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of my invention, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of same.
The pins A are usually made of round iron, withshoulders b near the lower ends thereof, to prevent their dropping through the holes which are'made in the wagon to receive them. Above the aforesaid shoulders the pins are made tapering and Bent somewhat toward the rear. In their upper ends are constructed eyes a for the attachment of short chains, by means of which a pair of the pins are connected toget-her.
My improvement, which will now be readily understood, consists in providing the pins, at a point just above their shoulders, with lugs 01, to which I pivot the lower end of alever, E, having a curved spur projecting from the rear thereof, as shown at f. The upper portion of this lever is furnished with a ring, 9, by means of which it is secured, when not in use, to the upper end of the pin, as shown in Fig. 1.
My improved pin is operated by raising the ring 9 clear of the top of the pin A, and by pressing the handle of the lever E rearward, thus bringing the under side of the spur in contact with the upper surface of the wagon and prying the pin upward out of the hole in which it had been placed.
Instead of pivoting the lever to the pin, the latter may be made with an opening through the largest part thereof, and a point added to the lever just below the spur and on a continuation of the line of the leverv proper, this point to be inserted in the aforesaid opening, with the spur resting on the surface of the wagon, and the prying out of the pin to be accomplished by pressing downward on the handle of the lever. Furthermore, if desired, the end of the spur may be provided with a friction-roller. These changes will, however, add to the expense Without materially increasing the value of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the tail-pins of wagons, a lever and spur, as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The pin A, provided with lugs d, to which is pivoted a lever, E, having a spur,f, and the said lever furnished with a ring, g, as described, and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
H. It. ATWOOD.
In presence of= J. U. HUBBELL, P. J. FINNEY.
