This invention appertains to cooling towers, and the like, for cooling water or other liquids used in heating exchange apparatus, for example, in the condenser in which the steam from an engine is condensed, or which the vapor of a refrigerating apparatus is condensed.
One of the primary objects of my invention is to provide novel means for varying-the inclination of the water runways, or decks, whereby the water can be caused to run slow or fast thereover, according to the temperature of the outside atmosphere.
Another salient object of my invention is to provide means whereby the various parts of the cooling runways can be simultaneously adjusted to a relatively great inclination to the horizontal, to cause the water to flow rapidly thereover and thereby prevent the freezing of the water in extremely low temperatures, or to nearly a horizontal position, to cause the water to move slowly thereover in relatively high summer temperatures.
A still further object of my invention is the use of a fine flexible screen wire for the cooling water, with arcuate adjustable shoes engaging the screen at spaced points and on opposite sides thereof, for varying the contour of the screen to govern the flow of water thereover.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which drawing:

Obviously, my invention can assume different forms, but, as shown in the drawing, I can prothe condenser in pipe 3i.

This screen can be formed of a wire mesh of a fine gauge, and the upper end of the screen is anchored to the top water-distributing This pipe 3i is also provided with a plurality of outlet openings 32. This trough 34 is provided with an outlet pipe 35, which leads to the condenser.
Rockably mounted between the standards 33 are a plurality of arcuately shaped shoes 36.
These shoes engage the opposite faces of the screen, and by swinging the shoes on their pivots the contour of the screen can be changed to greater or less curves. All of the shoes are operatively connected by 'a series of links 31, so that upon movement of one shoe the other shoes will be simultaneously adjusted therewith.
The water flows from the pipe 3! on to the screen, and some of the water flows down the screen, and some will flow through the screen in the form of a spray. This will bring about the rapid cooling of the water. By moving the shoes downwardly, the screen can be made nearly straight, so that the water will flow rapidly down the same to prevent freezing thereof.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of my invention, but what I claim as new is:
A liquid-cooling device comprising an overhead liquid-distributing pipe, a screen anchored at its top and bottom ends for receiving liquid from said pipe, rockably mounted arcuate shoes for engaging the opposite sides of the screen, and means for simultaneously rocking all of the shoes for varying the contour of the screen.
