4 Claims.
This invention relates to cartons or; fiber board boxes of that type which are formed in flat blanks and then folded to be set up and enclosed by overlapping flaps requiring adhesive to retain the flaps in closed positions.
A primaryobject of the invention is to form a carton or box in such manner that in the process of manufacture the adhesive may be applied to all of the required flaps in a single op- -1 eration by passing the carton in flat form through the usual and well known type of adhesive applying machines whereby the adhesive is applied at both ends of the box on extending fiat ends.
A still further important object of the invention is to provide a box with overlapping sealing flaps which have a plastic adhesive carried thereby forming a permanent seal upon contact of one adhesively coated flap over another adhesively coated flap, and yet permitting the box to be stacked one over another in flat form with the adhesive sides of the flaps of one box being contacted with the non-adhesive sides of the flaps of another box, all without any tendency for the adhesive to adhere to the next adjacent box.
The invention permits the forming of a box that may be shipped in fiat form with the adhesive already applied to the sealing flaps of such a character that all that is required of the user is to press one flap over the other to complete the sealing operation without further application of adhesive orwithout having to heat or moisten the adhesive. I
It is a further important object of the invention to form an exceedingly simple blank for a box of the above indicated characteristics, which blank may be produced without complicated dies or cutting work.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to those versed in the art in the following description of one particular form of the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring first to Fig. 1, a blank is formed to have a central rectangular portion ABCD and this portion is divided into front, back and end panels by the score lines EF, GH, and IJ. Extending integrally, respectively from both the top and bottom lines of the panel AEFD are the tongues l0 and I5. From the end panel EGHF extend-integrally, respectively the tongues l6 and Il, both being identical in dimensions and.
2 each extending outwardly further than the adja cent shorter tongues l0 and I5.
From the next panel GIJH extend integrally therefrom the respective tongues [23 and l 9, both tongues extending outwardly to the same distance as do the tongues I6 and IT. From the next adjacent panel IBCJ integrally extend therefrom the tongues 20 and 2| a distance equal to that of the tongues l0 and I5. The tongues are each separated one from the adjacent tongues by cuts through the blank that each tongue may hinge independently of the other tongue from the top and bottom edges respectively of the major portion of the blank, these top and bottom lines preferably being score lines across the junctions, of the respective tongues and panels, that is, the lines AB and DC are preferably defined by score lines. A laterally extending tongue 22 extends from the outer marginal end AD of the central blank portion, the blank being preferably scored along the line AD to permit ready bending of the tongue along that line.
The blank thus formed, Fig. 1, is then folded along the score lines EF and IJ to bring the lateral tongue 22 over on top of the panel GIJH and have the panel IBCJ lap over on top of the tongue 22 and be adhesively united therewith.
While the box blank is in this flattened form, adhesive is applied across both ends outwardly from the lines EI and FJ to coat both tongues l0 and 20 and the protruding'ends of the tongues I6 and i8 at the one end and the tongues l5 and 2| as well as the protruding ends of the tongues I I and [9 at the other end, Fig. 2. This adhesive is preferably a latex, either natural or synthetic, which may be applied, as indicated,
to the various tongues in a. liquid state to dry somewhat rather quickly and then be non-adhering to a non-coated blank part when placed thereover, but will very securely adhere to the adhesive or another coated part when pressed thereover.
Following the adhesive application step, the box is ready for shipment or delivery to the user who sets up the box by pushing on the edges EF and U to carry the blank, Fig. 3, into boxshape as shown in Fig. 4, with the various tongues extending outwardly from the side and end panels. As indicated in Fig. 5, the tongue 20 is bent inwardly and the tongue I6 is folded thereover to have the adhesive coating of the tongue 5 contact with the coating on the tongue 20 so that these two members may then become adhesively united thereby.
Next, the tongue II is folded over the tongues 16 and 20 and the tongue I8 is folded down over the tongue ll to have the two adhesive surfaces contact one another to form the bond or seal so as to retain the tongues in the closed positions. It is to be noted that in the particular dimensions selected for the example herein, the tongue [6 does not reach entirely across the tongue 20 but that the tongue I! does come entirely across over the tongue III to the line EA so that all of the adhesive coating of the tongue I is completely covered. The tongues on the other end of the box are similarly carried to the closed positions and adhesively retained in those positions by first bringing the tongue 2| inwardly and the tongue I I thereover, followed by folding in the tongue I and then folding the tongue l9 over the tongue 15.
As above indicated, the particular form of box herein illustrated and described is but one possible example of the'invention. It is obvious that the proportions of the sides and ends may be varied and also the particular shapes of the overlapping tongues. Furthermore it is immaterial whether the lateral tongue 22 extends from the line AD or extends from the other end of the blank from the line BC, and it, therefore, becomes obvious that structural variations may be employed without departing from the spirit of the invention and I, therefore, do not desire to be limited to the precise form herein shown and described beyond the limitations as may be imposed by the following claims.
I claim:
1. For a set-up carton, a folded carton blank having side wall sections consecutively connected one with the other along corner fold lines, said blank being flattened to have two adjacent side wall sections overlapping and resting on two other adjacent side wall sections thereunder, each of said sections having a tongue extending respectively from its top and bottom ends, the tongues extending from said under adjacent sections being longer than said upper tongues to have end portions exposed beyond the overlapping upper tongues, and a plastic adhesive on and limited to the exposed end portions of said under tongues and also on the upper the upper tongues.
2. For a set-up carton, a folded carton blank having side wall sections consecutively connected one with the other along corner fold lines, said blank being flattened to have two adjacent side wall sections overlapping and resting on two other adjacent side wall sections thereunder, each of said sections having a tongue extending respectively from its top and bottom ends, the tongues extending from said under adjacent sections being longer than said upper tongues to have end portions exposed beyond the overlapping upper tongues, and a plastic adhesive on and limited to the exposed end portions of said under tongues and also on the upper faces of the upper tongues, said adhesive being characterized by tenacious adherence to said tongues faces of when applied, but, following a drying period,
remaining plastic and bonding securely with like adhesive, while having substantially no permanent adhesion with surfaces uncoated with the adhesive, whereby the blanks with adhesive coated tongues may be stacked one on the other for storage and shipping, and the blanks be eventually folded into cartons with the longer tongues folded over onto the shorter tongues to bring the adhesive surfaces together for bonding and forming sealed carton end walls.
3. For a set-up carton, a folded carton blank having side wall sections consecutively connected one with the other along corner fold lines, said blank being flattened to have two adjacent side wall sections overlapping and resting on two other adjacent side wall sections thereunder, each of said sections having a tongue extending respectively from its top and bottom ends, the tongues extending from said under adjacent sections being longer than said upper tongues to have end portions exposed beyond the overlapping upper tongues, and a plastic adhesive on and limited to the exposed end portions of said under tongues and also on the upper faces of the upper tongues at least adjacent their respective side wall sections, said adhesive being latex.
4. For a set-up carton, a folded carton blank Y having side wall sections consecutively connected one with the other along corner fold lines, said blank being flattened to have two adjacent side wall sections overlapping and resting on two other adjacent side wall sections thereunder, each of said sections having a tongue extending respectively from its top and bottom ends, the tongues extending from said under adjacent sections beinglonger than said upper tongues to have end portions exposed beyond the overlapping upper tongues, and a plastic adhesive on and limited to the exposed end portions of said under tongues and also on the upper faces of the upper tongues, over the entire area thereof.
