This invention has reference to improvements in that class of pen and pencil cases in which the pen and pencil are contained within a case from which they can be made to project, either or both, at-pleasure.

The invention consists in the peculiar arrangement of two spiral grooves connected with the pen and pencil, so thatlthe pen or pencil can be projected beyond the case, or both may be simultaneously projected beyond the case or withdrawn into the case, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pen and pencil case with the pen and pencil projecting beyond the case for use. Fig. 2 is a View of the pencil-holder provided witlna pin,

by means of which it is connected with the spiral groove by which it is operated. Fig. 3 is a View, partly in section, showing the pen cil or lead holder (shown in Fig. 1) inserted into a tube provided with a slot parallel with its axis, and both inserted into a tube provided with a spiral groove havinga;right- Fig.4 is a view of the pen-holder. In the drawings, Aand Bare two parts of thetubular case, and O the part surrounding the pencil-head. 3 When the part A is held in the hand and the part B is turnedto the right the pen is projected from the case, and when turned tothe left the'pen is withdrawn into the case; and when the part G is turned to the right the pencil is projected, as the part 0 is secured to the tube f, provided with a right-handed spiral groove, and the part B to the tube h, provided with a left-handed groove; and if, therefore, the parts B and G are turned in the same direction, both pen and pencil are either projected or withdrawn, according to the direction in which the parts are turned.

d is the tube holding the lead or pencil, and d a pin by which it is operated. cfis a long tube provided with a slot parallel to its axis, one end of which is turned at right angle, so as to form a bayonet-slot. f is a tube provided with a right-hand spiral groove, and is connected with the head 0. As the pin d extends through the groove in the tube e, and also into the spiral groove of tube f, by turning the head or part G the pencil-tube is made to slide in or out of the tube 0.

g is the pen-holder tube, provided with the pin g, which enters into the spiral groove in the tube It and is operated thereby, the part B of the case being secured to the tube h by solder or otherwise.

By this arrangement the construction of the case is more simple, and both the pen and pencil can be more readily operated, and both at the same time, and both or either the pen and pencil projected beyond the' case or withdrawn into the case, so as to be protected from injury.

Having thus described my invention, I claim'as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the tube h, provided with spiral groove, and the pen-holder provided with a pin entering said spiral groove, of the tubes B and f, the latter provided with a spiral groove, tube 0 f, provided with a straight slit, and pencil-head 01, having a pin, cl, secured thereto, substantially as set forth.
