WILLIAM GERBER, OF- FREMONT CENTRE, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF TWO- THIRDS OF HIS RIGHT TO JOSEPH AND ANDREW GERBER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN UNHAlRlNG-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 221,545, dated November 11, 1879; application filed. August 30, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM GERBER, of Fremont Centre, in the county of Newaygo and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Unhairing-Machines, of which the following is a specification..
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in theconstruction of devices for removing hair from hides. preparatory to their being tanned; and the invention consists in a suitable frame which supports a turn-table and track, by means of which the hides may be brought under the fleshing-knives, which are secured to an endless belt or chain, arranged and operated as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan, showing the arrangement of levers which operate the turn-table and truck. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section on line a: m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is aperspective view of turntable truck.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a suitable frame, within which at each end are properly hung the frames B, which are provided .with the inwardly-projecting V'shaped levers 0, their inner ends being connected together by a cord or chain, a, which passes through the treadle-lever D, the inner end of which is pivoted to the frame, as shown at b. On the two outer corners of the frames B are secured upwardly-projecting studs 0, upon which rests the track-frame E, the weight of which depresses thefr-ames B and elevates the inner the frame H is journaled ashaft, lglwhich may be driven in any convenient manner, and which carries the pulleys d. The forward ends of the frame I are recessed to receive the blocks L, in which is journaled a shaft, M, which carries pulleys 6. Around these pulleys e and cl pass endless belts or chains N which carry the fleshing-knives 0. Should the belts N become loose after using for a time, they can readily be tightened by driving the Wedges h down back of the blocks L, which will force them outwardly, and thus stretch or tighten the belt, as may be desired.
In operation, a hide with the hair side uppermost is laid upon ,the turn-table, when the operator rolls the table under the frame which carries the knives. He then depresses the lever D with his foot, and thus, by means of the devices hereinbefore described, elevates the table, bringing the hide in contact with the fleshing-knives, which effectually remove the hair.
By the use of this machine much time and labor are saved, and the work is more effectually done than when performed by hand in the usual way.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a machine for unhairing hides, the combination, with a turn-table having a revolving and sliding motion, and supported on levers which give it avertical movement, of a frame projecting over such turn-table, and having fleshing-knives carried by endless belts, substantially as described and shown.
2. In a machine for unhairing hides, the combination, with the turn-table G, truck F, and track-frame E, of the frames B and levers O D, substantially as described and shown.
WILLIAM GERBER.
