The present invention relates to a device for spreading parallel continuous rayon filaments in thick bundles as they are produced, to yield a I fiat uniform sliver of continuous filaments re- 6 sembling a card web.
In recent years many processes and apparatus have been proposedwhich were to serve for transforming endless or continuous bundles of rayon filaments by a single combined working 10 process into extensible slivers of rayon fibers that is into so-called card slivers which can be further treated without intermediate operations and which can be directly spun into threads. In these processes the main object was to prevent the original parallel position of the invidual filaments to be materially altered. This transformation -of bundles of continuous filaments into extensible slivers is' brought about either by tear-.
ing or by cutting or also by cutting and applying an draft simultaneously.
It is an object of the invention to provide a device in which the continuous bundles of artificial filaments are prepared for tearing or cutting into an extensible sliver in such a manner as to convert a number of thick bundles of filaments into a flat uniform sliver resembling a card web.
Further objects of the invention reside in details of construction of the said apparatus. which may be more easily understood with'reference to the following detailed specification. a
The new apparatus consists of a device of the character described comprising-means for feeding the bundles of "continuous filaments and means for shaking said bundles, the last-named means comprising flattened tubes havingrounded edges at the tube openings and performing a reciprocating movement perpendicularly to the direction of travel of the bundles of filaments.
' These shaking means perform a beating action on the travelling bundles of filaments which is repeated often enough to cause the several bundles to spread to a uniform uninterrupted card web with substantially parallel individual filaments.
The invention will be more clearly understood with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the essential parts of the apparatus while I Figure 2 shows a diagrammatic sectional view of a device according to this invention.
In Figure 1 the individual bundles of filaments a are led over a shaking device I and from there 65 over the combined shaking devices 2 and 3. The
figure'shows the excentrically journalled axle 4 of the individual shaking membersand the driving device 5. In Figure l the filaments enter the device at I and pass through it in the direction of the arrow. n 6
In Figure 2 the bundles of filaments a are led over the leading rolls 6 to a shaking device I reciprocating in the direction of the arrow marked LR. From there the bundle of filaments a is led over further rolls 6 to the 'composite shaking device 2 in which the two tube-shaped members are iournalled around the shafts 4, in the direction of the arrows marked 0 and U. A third shaking device 3 is arranged further in the path of the filaments a in which a card web produced from the bundles in the preceding shaking devices l and 2 isfurther flattened and spread out to yield a perfectly fiat and uniform body of filaments. In this figure the means for driving and reciprocating the shaking devices I, 2 and 3 are shown diagrammatically and their action is believed to be self-explanatory to those skilled in the art.
The shaking devices which serve for equalizing the bundles of filaments consist of flat channellike tubes having rounded edges which tubes are so journalled and driven that they perform beating movements round an excentrically positioned axle '4 perpendicularly to the direction of travel of the filaments. The speed of the beating movement may be regulated at will. These beating fiat tubes may have the same diameter along theirwhole length or they may have the shape shown in the drawings in which the diameter increases a little from the inner part to the openings.
In Figure 2 these fiat tube-like beating devices are each shown in two positions, one of which is shown by dotted lines. The driving means 5 L are not a part of the invention and may be of 40 any suitable form, for instance as shown in Figure 2 in which the driving means consist of excentrical discs.
The figures show further the direction of the filaments a from the endless bundles of filaments to the exit of the uniform fiat sliver resembling a card web. The fiber bundles which may bev taken from spinning cans, reels, laps or directly from the rayon spinning plant are led and driven by a system of simple or double leading rolls marked 6 in the drawings which feed the fiber bundles and which regulate the uniform draft necessary for further treatment. On the beating or shaking device I a preliminary opening of the bundles is produced where after the spread bundles are led into the double or composite shaking devices 2 and 3 the inner edges of which are moved in opposite directions in the direction of the arrows and U. The spreading and rendering uniform of the bundles of filaments is best seen in Figure 1. The fiat tube-like form of the beating or shaking devices has proved especially useful.
The fiat sliver resembling a card web can be led to any suitable cutting or tearing device known'in the art. The device according to U. S. Patent No. 2,142,475 has proved especially useful for this purpose.
We claim:

comprising means for feeding said bundles of continuous filaments and means for shaking said bundles, said shaking means comprising pairs of flattened tubes having rounded edges at the tube openings,
andperforming reciprocating I movement perpendicularly to the direction of travel of said bundles.
3. A device for spreading parallel bundles of continuous rayon filaments to yield a fiat uniform sliver resembling a card web while maintaining the parallel position of the filaments which device comprises means for feeding said bundles onto said device and means for shaking the bundles, said shaking means comprising a plurality of flattened, channel-like tubes having rounded edges at the tube openings and flattened surfaces of substantially elliptic shape and mounted to perform reciprocal movement perpendicularly to the direction of said bundles.
4. A device in accordance with claim 3 in which the tubes are mounted on and driven by excentrically positioned axles perpendicularly to the direction of travel of the filaments. 5. A device in accordance with claim 3 in which the plurality of tubes comprises a composite shaking device consisting of two tubes of the type described, the opposing inner edges of which move in opposite directions.
