The invention relates to a Window structure and more especially to a sash releasable window construction.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a structure of this character, wherein the slidable sashes can be readily and easily released from the window frame so that the glass or pane can be cleaned with dispatch and also repairs can be made particularly when a glass or pane is broken, the sashes being slidably fitted and are counterweighted in a novel manner.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a structure of this character, wherein the same is susceptible of being knocked down for convenience in the shipment thereof and also can readily be set up at will where the same is to be installed and also it can be fitted with weather stripping at the factory or at the point of manufacture and shipped in the knocked-down condition under such assembly and a sash can be readily removed and replaced after once being installed.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a structure of this character, wherein a sash may be readily removed and replaced after once being installed within a window frame and the fitting of the sash within said frame is novel so that the said sash can be raised and lowered, either the upper or lower sash or both for the opening and closing of the window in the usual manner.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a structure of this character, wherein the sashes, both upper and lower, are fitted within the window frame so that the window will be Weather-proof and such sashes maintained tight yet free to enable adjustment thereof for the opening and closing of the window in a customary manner.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a structure of this character, which is simple in its make-up, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in operation, readily and easily installed, enabling the quick removal of the sashes from a window frame and replacement thereof, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates generally a portion of a window frame of conventional construction, B a portion of the lower sash and C a portion of the upper sash, respectively, slidably fitted within the window frame for vertical adjustment and the opening and closing of the window. The frame A involves a header l0, sill ll, filler i2, stool l3, apron i l, inside finishing strips i5 and vertical sides iii, respectively. In erecting a building, the window frame A is installed in the wall of the building at the window opening provided therein in the customary manner and becomes a permanent setup, The finishing strips it constitute the trim at the inner side of the window frame while out- 1 side of this frame is the outer trim ll.
Within the frame A at the header i ii and each side 56 are the spaced parallel inside and outside framing strips i8 and i9, respectively, these being counterseated in the header and each side 16 of the said frame for accommodating therebetween the structure constituting this present invention and hereinafter fully described.
The structure constituting the present invention comprises a metal sill plate 26, a sash retaining header strip 2| and a sectional side guide 22, respectively, the guide 22 being duplicated for arrangement at each side 16 of the frame A. Each guide includes a plurality of sections 23, 2d and 25, respectively, these being made from sheet metal and are bent or stamped into shape correspondingly for the formation of an intermediate parting rib 26, outer and inner stops 2'! and 28 and guide grooves 29, respectively, for the slidable interfitting of the said sashes B and C with the said side guides. The strip 2! is made from sheet metal bent or stamped correspondingly to each side guide having the parting rib 30, outer and inner stops 3i and 32 and the guide grooves 33, respectively, these matching the similar portions of each side guide. The strip 25 adjacent to each end has formed therein a slot 34 for removably receiving a tongue 35 formed at the upper end of each side guide for the interfitting of the said strip and guide together. Each end of the strip 2i carries a wire bracket 36, which is removably engageable in a seat 3i provided in each side it close to the header in and in this manner the strip 25 is interfitted with the window frame A to be sustained in place between the framing strips I8 and i9 at the header it of said frame. This bracket 36 constitutes a hanger for weight pulleys 38 having the weight cords 39 trained thereover, these being attached to the lower and upper sashes B and C, respectively, and each suspends a counterbalance weight 46 in a way 45 therefor between the framing strips l8 and I9 at each side of the window frame A, the cords 39 being attached in the usual manner to the said sashes and slide balancing of the said sashes is had, as is customary.
The tongue 35 is formed at the upper end of the section 23 which at the lower end thereof is formed with sockets 42 accessible to dowel prongs 4-3 fitted with the section 24 and projected therefrom at its upper end next to the lower end of the section 23 and in this manner these sections 23 and 2d are releasably coupled with each other. The prongs 43 are a part of the slotted female members 34 of slip joints, the male members 45 of these joints being made fast to the section 25. Each male member has a coupling hook at loosely accommodated in the slot All in the female member 4 5 companion thereto and in this manner the sections 24 and 25 are loosely hinged together through the instrumentality of the slip joints referred to so that the section 25 can swing ar cuately and is susceptible of displacement to a limited degree with respect to the section 24 in the placement of each side guide and its re moval in between and from between the framing strips l8 and i9 within the window frame.
Fixed intermediate of the window frame in the longitudinal direction thereof between the framing strips '3 and i9 is a holding bracket 18 which is engageable by keepers i9 on the section 23 and keepers 56 on the section 24. These keepers are a part of the female members 44 of the slip joints so that these keepers 49 and 50 function for separable fastening of the sections 23 and 24 in their coupled relation to the bracket 48 for sustaining the side guide in a perpendicular position and the sections 23 and 24 align with each other within the window frame A.
l he sill plate 28 is made secure in superimposed relation to the filling l2 and stool I 3 by fasteners, one beingindicated at 5|, and such plate is provided with a step 52 for the base horizontal rail 53 of the lower sash B.
The section next to the lowermost end thereof has slidably fitted therewith horizontally movable reversely thrown locking bolts 54 simultaneously operated upon by a kicker dog 55 of a turn button 56, the latter being exposed outwardly of the side guide at the lowermost portion of the section 25 thereof and is suitably journaled in the parting rib 26 formed therefrom so as to be readily accessible and these bolts 5 are adapted for latching engagement with keepers 57 cut and bent from upstanding flanges 58 of the sill plate 263. Thus the bolts 5 5 permit the release of the section 25 in its fixed position with respect to the sections 23 and 2d of the side guide so that the latter can be disassembled in its setup in the window frame A to allow for the removal of the sashes B and C from within said frame. To remove the side guide from within the window frame A, the initial step in the operation is the uniatching of the section 25 of this guide by releasing the bolts 54 through manual turning of the button 55 and the swinging of this section 25 to the position shown by dotted lines from the full line position disclosed in Figure l. The section 25 with the section 2 3 can be removed from between the framing strips i8 and 99, being understood of course that the lower sash B must be in a raised or elevated position within the window frame A at the instant of the removal step of operation hereinbefore set forth. When both sections 2 and 25 of the side guide have been removed, the sashes B and C can be lowered within the window frame to clear the section 22 of each side guide and thence these sashes can be swung from within the frame A to clear the same and suspended by the Weight cords 39 in the cleared condition.
When the sections 24 and 25 are to be replaced between the framing strips l8 and Hi, the prongs 43 are aligned with and engaged in the sockets 22 therefor in the section 23, the section 25 being swung from the dotted line position in Figure 1 to the full line position therein and latched by the bolts 56 resulting in the completed fixed assembled condition of the side guide within the window frame A.
The sections 23, 2d and 25 of the side guide are fixed in a perpendicular position within the window frame A and the header strip 25 disposed horizontally and interlocked with said guide. In this condition of the structure the sashes B and C are slidably mounted within the window frame A so that such sashes can be opened and closed or adjusted in the usual well-known manner.
Each bracket 36 has bent therefrom bearings 55 for the journaling of the pulleys 38 as will be clearly apparent from Figures 1 and 8 of the drawings.
The section 23 of the side guide at the tongue 35 is recessed at to accommodate the parting rib 35] of the strip 25 when the latter is inter-.
locked with the side guides, this being clearly shown in Figures 9 and 10 of the drawings.
What is claimed is:
1. In a releasable knockdown structure of the kind described, a permanent window frame having a sash opening therein, sectional side guides releasably arranged in said opening, a slip joint between a lowermost section and a section next thereto of each side guide, means on each lowermost section for latching the same in vertical alignment with the other sections of each side guide, a header piece. interlocked with said side guides and having interfitting connection with the frame, means holding the side guides above said latching means, and brackets carried by the header piece and releasably interfitted with the window frame,
2.. In a releasable knockdown structure of the kind described, a permanent window frame having a sash opening therein, sectional side guides releasably arranged. in said opening, a slip joint between a lowermost section and a section next thereto of each side guide, means on each lowermost section for latching the same in vertical alignment with the other sections of each side guide, a header piece interlocked with said side guides and having interfitting connection with the frame, means holding the side guides above said latching means, brackets carried by the header piece and releasably interfitted with the window frame, and a sill plate fitted with the window frame and having means for engagement by said latching means.
3. In a releasable knockdown structure of the kind described, a permanent window frame having a sash opening therein, sectional side guides releasably arranged in said opening, a slip joint between a lowermost section and a section next thereto of each side guide, means on each lowermost section for latching the same in vertical alignment with the other sections of each side guide, a header piece interlocked with said side guides and having interfitting connection with the frame, means holding the side guides above said latching means, brackets carried by the header piece and releasably interfitted with the window frame, a sill plate fitted with the window frame and having means for engagement by said latching means, and upper and lower sashes slidably fitting the said guides and having weighted cords associated with the window frame.
