IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 221,289.
dated November 4, 1879; application filed July 8, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONAS DIERDORFF, of Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved attachment for cultivators, the use of which will avoid the use of stay rods or chains, will give a direct draft, and will prevent any down-draft upon the horses necks, and which, at the same time, shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.
The invention consists in the combination of the two hinged bars, provided at their rear ends with clevises or loops and clevis-holes,
the coupling-block having its forward end slotted to receive the double tree, and the long screw or brace, provided with the two with each other, to adapt the device to be applied to a cultivator, as hereinafter full y described.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents two bars, to the. rear ends of which are attached clevises or clips a, to connect the said ends with the lower parts of the arms of the bow or arch of the axle. In the rear ends of the bars A are formed holes to receive the clevises for connecting the plow-beams or axle of a cultivator with the said ends. The forward ends of the bars A are hinged to the rear end of the draft-block B by bolts, the said rear end being rabbeted upon the upper side to receive the forward ends of the said bars. The forward end of the coupling or draft block B is slotted to receive the double-tree, which is pivoted to it by a bolt. 'To the middle part of the coupling-block B is attached the lower end of a long screw or brace, G, which is designed to pass up through the tongue of the cultivator in the place where the double-tree is usually pivoted, where it is secured in place by two nuts, 0, screwed upon it above and below the said tongue.
With this construction, by nuts 0 upon the screw 0 the and with it the doubletree, may be raised and lowered, as the height of the plants may require.
- Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, in a cultivator with an arched axle and tongue, of the draft-block B, the bars AA, hinged thereto in front, and provided with the side loops or clips, a, at the other end, and the screw 0, having nuts 0, as shown and described, whereby the bars A and block B may be elevated or depressed, to suit the height of the growing crop, without affecting the depth or position of the plows.
