This invention relates to mechanisms for supplying fastenings to the driving instrumentalities of machines which drive gangs of iastenings, andv of racewaysfor fastenings and a separator oper-v ated intermittently to separate and deliver iastenings from the raceways. Some machines drive such a large number of fastenings that it is impracticable to provide as many raceways as the number of fastenings driven in each cycle of operations, and they have accordingly been provided with half as many raceways as the number of fastenings driven and with `means for operating the separator 'to deliver two sets of fastenings in each cycle, the rst setbeing de- 20, livered to a receiving slide in which the fastenings are retained until ,the second set is delivered. Such a construction is disclosed, for example, in Letters Patent No. 1,129,882, granted on March 2, 1915 on an application of R. F. Mc- Fe'eely. l
It will be evident that if a separator operated twice in each cycle as above described delivers each time the same number of fastenings, an
even number of fastenings will be supplied to the 30; driving instrumentalities regardless of the number of the raceways. In some machines, however, it is desirable to drive an odd number of iastenings The present invention accordingly provides novel means to cause different numbers 35% of fastenings to be delivered respectively by different delivery movements of a separator. prior to each delivery movement of the reciprocatory separator so that` diiierent niunbers of fastenings are delivered respectively by alternate delivery movements of the separator. For turning the disk there is provided a pawl `which is movable with the separator and acts on one of four pins carried by the disk each time the separator moves in one direction, the pawl being yieldable idly upon engagement with another of the pins as the separator receives its delivery movement in the opposite direction. For maintaining the disk in its properposition after each turning movement, there is further provided in the construction shown a spring-controlled member arranged to bear against two of the pins.
The Vnovel features of the invention, including various novel details of construction and combinations of parts, will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing and thereafter pointed out in the claims.

Fastening-supplying mechanism of the type illustrated in the above-mentioned Letters Patent, which is constructed particularly for use with tacks, comprises a support `2 or a plurality of inclined raceway devices ll (hereinafter re ferred to` as raceways) which receive tacks de' livered by ahopper (not shown) and support the tacks in rows by their heads. Mounted'to reciprocate transversely of the raceways at their lowerk ends is a separator 6 comprising aplate or series of plates secured to a slide 8. AThe sepa-` rator includes a plurality of pointed fingers Il) the rear edges of which are arranged to engage the shanks of the endmost tacks in the raceways and thus to hold back the rows of tacks, asy
illustrated in Fig. 2, until the separator has moved Y far enough toward the left for the points of the iingers to pass beyond the endmost tacks, whereupon the rows of tacks are released and move downwardly along the raceways until the endmost tacks are stopped by engagement with shoulders l2 on the separator, as illustrated in Fig. 3. When'the separator is thereafter moved toward the right, the points of the fingers Iii enter lbetween the endmost tacks and the tacks next to them and cause the endmost tacks toy move along oblique slots ifi in the separator until holes i6 at the inner ends of the slots aline with the heads of the tacks, whereupon the tacks are permitted to drop through grooves i3 formed in a block 2li and through holes 22 in the member 2. The tacks pass from the holes 22, in-the constructiony herein shown, into holes 255 formed in a receiving slide 2tV which receives one set of tacks delivered bythe separator and retains them until the next set is` delivered by the separator, whereupon both sets are delivered from the receiving slide tothe tack-driving mechanisms of the machine, in accordance with the disclosure of Letters Patent No. 1,129,882. The block 2Q, commonly known as the end block, is supported in a readily detachable manner on the memberV 2 and assists in supporting the separator 5. to this end block are a plurality of plates 23, herein shown as three in number, which overlap the separator t and also overlap the lower end portions of the raceways il in recesses in the tops of the raceways, portions of these plates being reducedv in thickness and provided with slots 3B (Figs. 2 and 3) in line with the raceway slots to receive the'tacks 4at the lower end portions of the raceways. At the lower ends of the slots 3Q, except one of the slots as explained below, the plates 26 are provided with holes 32 which permit the tacks to drop as soon as the holes l'in the separator arrive in alinement with the holes 32.

It will accordingly be evident that the separator Vdelivers alternately the same number oi tacks as the number of the raceways and a number which is one less than the number of lthe raceways.` An odd number of tacks, therefore, is delivered for use in each cycle of operations of the machine.
The disk 34 has an upstanding cylindrical portion flu extending through a hole in the middle plate 28 and engaged on its upper end by a lug 42 lower face of the disk in Fig. l. Also mounted' in the recess 556 in the separator is a pawl Eil controlled by a spring 52 carried by the separater, thespring maintaining the pawl normally in such a position that its end face will engage one of the pins i8 and turn the disk ninety degrees about its axis each time the separator moves toward the left, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. When the separator is next moved toward the right an inclined face Sii on the pawlis engaged by another of the pins i8 to cause the pawl to swing against the resistance of the spring 52 until it .passes that Ypin and is returned by the spring to the position indicated in Fig. 4 adjacent. to the pin which it has just passed. combination with a plurality of raceways for fastenings, and a separator movable intermittently to separate and deliver fastenings from said raceways, of a member mounted for turning movement and associated with one of said raceways for controlling delivery of fastenings from that raceway, said member having therein diametrically opposite slots each arranged to receive the endmost fastening in that raceway and permit its delivery by the separator when the member is in the appropriate position and being formed between said slots for peripheral engagement with the endmost fastening in the race- Way to prevent its delivery by the separator, and means for turning said member ninety degrees about its axisprior to each delivery movement of the separator to cause diiferent numbers of fastenings to be delivered respectively by alternate delivery movements of the separator.

In fastening-supplying mechanism, the combination with -a plurality ofraceways for fastenings, and a separator mounted for reciprocatory movements to separate and deliver fastenings from said raceways, of a device mounted for 'turning movement and associated with one ofrsaid raceways for controlling delivery of fastenings from that raceway, said device being arranged to engage the endmost fastening in that raceway and prevent its delivery by the separator when the device is in one position and being so formed as to permit such delivery When it is turned to another position, and a member upon engagement with another portion of said device as the separator moves in the opposite direction. l
