This invention relates to a novel machine for preparing a photographic film record of numerical information or data which was entered into and/or calculated by an accounting machine or other keyboard controlled data entering machine and further to the provision of a machine of this type in which such numerical data may be photographically recorded upon a film in proximity to a photographically recorded reproduction of a document.
In its broader aspects the invention relates to a photographing recording machine for providing photographic records of numerical data entered into the machine under key control and accordingly the invention in its broader aspects is not n limited to accounting machines.
Films as prepared in the machine which forms the subject matter of the present application are adapted for use in certain accounting and statistical operations in other machines and the machines for utilizing such novel films will be subject matter of. separate applications.
Accordingly, one object of the present invention resides in the provision of a photographic recording machine for providing a photographic film record of,representations of numerical data entered into the machine from a keyboard.
A further object of, the present invention resides in the provision of a combined accounting n and photographic recording machine adapted to photographically record representations of numeral data entered into the accounting machine under the control of parts of the accounting machine.
A further object of the present invention resides in the provision of acombined accounting and photographic recording machine adapted to photographically record representations of results of computations performed by the accounting machine under the control of elements of the accounting machine.
A further object of the present invention resides in the provision of a combined accounting machine and photographic recording machine with provisions for controlling the latter machine from the former.
A further object of the present invention resides in the provision of a combined accounting and photographic recording machine in which numerical and/or result data entered into and/or computed by the accounting machine may be recorded photographically in juxtaposition to a reproduction of a document which was related to or formed the source of information entered into or computed by the accounting machine.
Other and more incidental objects reside in the provision of a combined photographic recording and accounting machine in which supplemental manual set up data and/or serial number data and/or miscellaneous supplemental data may be recorded photographically along with the other numerical data.
A further object of the present invention resides in the provision of a machine of the above mentioned type in which a series of successively equi-spaced photographic records may be recorded in compact form upon a film.
A further object of the present invention, according to one embodiment thereof, is to provide a combined accounting and photographic recording machine in which item entries may be placed on one film and results upon another film and also in the provision of a machine adapted to place both the item entries and results upon one and the same film.
Further objects of the present invention reside in the provision of a combined accounting and photographic recording machine wherein representations of data are set up in the photographic recording machine under the control of elements of the accounting machine and in which the actual photographing including film feed and exposure, is initiated automatically during actuation of the accounting machine.
A further object of the present invention resides in the provision of a combined photographic recording and accounting machine with novel controls intermediate various parts of: the two sections of the machine.
Further and other objects of the present invention will be hereinafter set forth in the accompanying specification and claims and shown in the drawings which by way of illustration show what Inow consider to be preferred embodiments of the invention.

Fig. 11 is a detail top plan view of a modified form of camera recording device for separately recording items and totals;
Fig. 12 is an elevational and part sectional view of the modification shown in plan in Fig. 11. The view is taken substantially on line I2I2 of Fig. 11;
Fig. 13 is a detail view of certain clutch and driving parts for the modified form of machine, the section being taken substantially on line I3I3 of Fig. 11;
Fig. 14 is a wiring diagram of the machine forming the modified embodiment of the invention;

Fig. 16 is a fragmentary section of a portion of the film which is produced showing data recorded thereon.
Before describing the details of the structure of the machine, a brief description will be given of the operations which the machine is intended to perform. The present machine incorporates a keyboard entry section shownas an adding machine of known type which is arranged for printing items, taking totals, sub-totals and transfer totals, etc. Associated with the adding machine is a photographic recording device which is arranged to record on a film the numerical data entered into the adding machine and the total data derived by the adding machine. For each entry into the adding machine and for each total printed by the adding machine on the usual adding machine tape a record is made of representations upon a film in the form of dots or spots which by their relative location to each other on the film represent the numerical data entered or totaled by the adding machine. Provision is also made in the photographic recording section for recording photographically when desired, a reproduction of a check or other document. Such check or like document can be photographed on the film in juxtaposition to numerical data records derived from the adding machine. Provision is also made for photographically recording a serial number which is representative of the number of the particular photographic record. Provision is also made for photographically recording hand set up numerical data which may be representative of dates or other information. In the photographic recording section provision is also made for recording the kind of total taken by the adding machine, for example, sub-totals, grand totals, transfer totals, etc. According to a modified embodiment of the invention provision is made for recording the item data entered into the adding machine on one film and for photographically recording the total data on a separate film.
Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2a, the adding machine which is used to illustrate a suitable type of keyboard controlled machine is here shown as a machine of the well known Burroughs type. The adding machine proper and here illustrated, is the adding and listing machine shown. and described in the United States patent to Vincent and White, No. 919,656, dated April 27, 1909. Since according to the present embodiment a motor driven type of adding machine is provided the arrangement for motor drive of the machine is of the type shown in the United States patent to Vincent, No. 1,054,628, dated February 25, 1913. The adding machine will only be described briefly since reference may be made to the foregoing patents for a fuller description.
The machine comprises a set of numeral keys I00 (Fig. 1), an-elimination key IOI corresponding to key 265E of the Vincent and White patent, a transfer total key I02, a sub-total key I03 and a total key I04. These latter keys correspond to keys 265T, 265s and 265 of the Vincent and White patent. There is also provided the motor bar I05, corresponding to the motor bar shown in the Vincent patent. The adding machine comprises also the usual two accumulators generally designated I06 and I07 (see Fig. 2a). The adding machine comprises also the usual type sectors controlled from the item entering keyboard and from the accumulators and which sectors are generally designated I08 in Fig. 2a. Such sectors correspond to part SIB of the Vincent and White patent.
Referring now to Fig. 9 this figure shows a portion of the linkage intermediate the motor bar I05 and the motor driven clutch. This mechanism is generally similar to the mechanism shown in Fig. 1 of the Vincent patent. Shaft I09 (Fig. 9) corresponds to shaft 2000 of the Vincent and White patent and this shaft is adapted to be rocked to difi'erential extents on different total taking operations. Shaft IIO of Fig. 9 corresponds to the shaft 6 of the Vincent patent and such shaft H0 in the present machine is utilized not only for driving the adding and listing machine but for also driving the photographic recording mechanism. For this purpose the shaft H0 at its opposite end (see Fig. 2a) is provided with a gear III which drives a gear II2 fixed to a shaft II3 which extends to the photographic recording section of the machine.
The connections from the adding and listing machine section to the photographic recording section comprise three trains of mechanism. One train of mechanisms extends from the various type sectors I08, another train comprises the shaft II3 just referred to and another train comprises a link connection to the shaft I09 previously referred to. The train to the sectors I08 will be first described. 1
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 211, each of the type sectors I08 has connected to it an upstanding armor link H6, each of which at its upper end connects to a lever II5. Each of these levers H5 at its rear end (see Fig. 2) connects to a downwardly depending link IIO which in turn, through a bell crank member I" is adapted to displace a horizontally disposed link II8. To aid in the displacement of these parts II4, I I5, H6,
H1 and H8, springs H9 are provided. Each link H8 has connected to it a slide member I (see Fig. 7) which is slidably mounted in the base plate of therecording section of the machine and arranged to be slidably displaced beneath the perforated mask l2l. Each of the slide members i211 carries an indicia indicating spot W2 which is preferably darkened. 'The top surface of the mask is preferably light or white in color and the other portions of the top of the slide i211, except for the indicia spot H22, are also white. Alternatively the indicia spot may be light and the rest of the top of the slide may be dark and the top of the mask may be dark. By referring to Fig. 6 it will be noted that by differentially displacing the slides im the' spots 922 will present a an appearance through the mask iii, the same as they would if these dark spots were painted on the top of the masks at the different index point locations. In this manner any setting of the type sectors N8 of the adding machine will set up a corresponding arrangement of spots through the perforated mask and set up representations of numerical data. The openings through the mask preferably have a spacing corresponding to the index point positions of a tabulating card, see the patent to Lake No. 1,772,492. It will be understood that there is a slide mt for each type sector ltd. A supplemental slide iffiT is also provided for indicating total and transfer total data. The supplemental slide is disposed beneath the extreme right hand columns of openings through the mask and such supplemental slide 92M is operated by a horizontal link 308T (see Fig. 2) which cooperates with a lever MlT connected to a link Mt'li (Fig. 2a). MET at its forward end connects to a lever i123 which'is fixed to a rock shaft 026 (see Fig. 9), extending across under the adding machine and having fixed to its opposite end a fever wt to which a vertical extending link lift; is connected. The link [I26 at its upper end connects to an arm i2? which is fixed to the shaft Hit. The shaft M39 is differentially rocked in total taking operations and the train of linkage just described is adapted to differentiallyshift the total recording slide EMT in the photographic recording section for setting up representations of total designating data to be photographed. For the purpose of restoring the total linkage just described a supplemental restoring spring 028 can be provided (see Fig. 9).
Referring again to Fig. 6, the mask ml is provided with an angle plate i129 disposed adjacent the numerical data zone of the mask. In the use of the machine a document such as a check I30 can be placed by hand in position abutting this angle plate and the data from this check can be photographically recorded. The photographic recording section is provided with a check receiving opening in the front of the housing and to the left of the left side of the .adding machine (see Fig. 1) so that the check can be placed in position by hand.
Referring again to Figs. 2 and 6, there is an opening I3! provided through the mask through which the numeral wheels I32 of a Veeder type counter can be viewed and photographed. This Veeder type counter is of the customary step by step variety and is preferably electromagnetically actuated by a rocking armature member I33 which is adapted to be rocked by the energizetion of an actuating electromagnet I34; In Fig. 2 reference character I35 shows the housing for the wheels of the counter.
If desired (see Fig. 6) other data such as the name of a bank, etc., may be printed on the top of the mask in any desired location, here shown in proximity to the counter opening 1132, such data being indicated at H36. In certain cases it may be desirable to setup by hand representations of supplemental: numerical data. For
this purpose the mask i2i is provided with a supplemental zone beneath which there are disposed a number of hand set slides ms. These slides are similar in construction to the slides i128 previously referred to and they may be moved by hand through members N88 to set up representations of fixed data which are to be photographically reproduced with the variable numerical data.
The inask is preferably provided with a black line it for providing a reference line indicating mark on the film upon photographing. Such refiirence line is shown in the film (Fig. 16) as Elia.
Photographic recording device Referring further to Figs. 2a and 9, the shaft Md makes one complete rotation upon each depression of the motor bar it?) and upon each motor driven actuation of the adding machine. This rotation of shaft Mil is utilized for effecting and controlling the operations of the camera element including film feeding and exposing.
Referring to Fig. 2 the shaft M3 at its end, through gearing i338, drives a vertical shaft MES). which vertical shaft in turn through gearing Mil (see also Fig. 1) drives (see Fig. 3) the notched element GM of an electromagnetic one revolution clutch (see also Fig. 4) which is revolubly mounted on a clutch shaft M2. The complemental part of this one revolution clutch comprises a pawl carrier arm M3 fixedly carried on the clutch shaft M2. M3 has pivotally secured to it the usual pawl or dog Mid which is adapted tobe released to engage with the notch of the element Mil upon the rocking of the armature MG upon the energization of the clutch magnet i457.
Film feed The clutch shaft M2 has fixed to it a mutilated gear Md (Fig. 5) and a locking element i lii of a Geneva device. The mutilated gear co-acts with the gear itiii and the locking element M9 cooperates with the other part of the geneva designated lei. Gear 956 through an idler M2 drives a gear i153. Gears 115D and 953 are respectively fixed to sprocket shafts i and H55. Upon engagement of the electromagnetic one revolution clutch the sprocket shafts i541 and H55 will be turned one-quarter of a revolution to advance the film in the camera 956, (see Fig. 2). The sprocket shafts have the usual film feeding sprockets l5? and i583 driven thereby. The film is advanced by the drive just mentioned from a supply roll N39 to a take-up roll W0. The takeup roll is preferably driven by a slipping belt drive connection Nil.
Shutter actuation In Fig. 2 the part generally designated N52 is the shutter of the camera which may be of any desired type. The usual lens is in association with the shutter. The shutter operating shaft is designated 53. Referring now to Fig. 5 provision is made for rocking the shutter operating shaft 53 afterthe film has been fed. For rocking this shutter shaft a cam member 164 is provided fixed to the gear M8 (see also Fig. 3) and til - lever I65 and therethrough rock the shutter shaft I63 and effect exposure of the film.
The camera I56 as shown in Fig. 2 is mounted a distance up above the mask and for illuminating the mask, lights I66 may be provided.
The operation of the machine will now-be generally described. y
It will be understood that data may be photographically recorded from an inserted documentor the recording of data from the document may be dispensed with. Under the assumption that check data is to be entered on the adding machine and the check recorded, the operation would be as follows. The operator of the machine first sets up on the amount keys on the adding machine or keyboard section the desired data from the check. After the data has been read from the check and entered on the adding machine keyboard, the operator places the check in position in the photograph recording section against the abutment I29. Thereafter the operator depresses the motor bar I05 of the adding machine. The operating cycles of the adding machine ensue and during the early part of the rotation of the shaft IIO, a section of film is fed forward in position for receiving an image. While the film is being fed forward the sectors I08 of the adding machine move toward the printing \line. Such movement of any sector from its normal no print position to beyond the zero position displaces a bail I61 (Fig. 2a) upwardly to cause a contact spring I68 to ride off of an insulated block I69 and-establish contact with a conducting segment strip I10. The relation ofparts is such that contact between I68 and I10 is not established unless some particular sector of the group of sectorshas moved to bring a significant figure to the printing line. This control is provided for suppressing film feed and photographic recording operations when the adding machine is making an idle stroke. ,The movement ofthe sectors I08 to printing'position differentially displaces the slides I20 to .set up a proper representation of the data which is to be photographically recorded under control of the adding machine or keyboard entry' device through the mask. 4
Referring to Fig. 2a, a commutator IN is also provided on shaft IIO having a single conducting spot I12 adapted to cooperate with brushes I13 upon the rotation of the commutator.
Referring now to Fig. 10, the camera clutch magnet I41 and the serial number magnet I36 are disposed in a circuit which extends tov the wiping contact element I68. The segment I10 is connected in a circuit to one of the brushes I13 and the other brush I13 is connected back to the other side of the line. The segment strip I12 on the commutator IN is in such relation'on the commutator that it will complete a circuit through the camera clutch magnet I41 and the serial number magnet I38 just after any type sector has moved past the zero position and effected the completion of the circuit between I68 and I10. Accordingly, during the move- 'ment of the type sectors I08 to printing posimers of the adding machine take their imprint from the type sectors the shutter device is timed to be operated and to cause an exposure to be taken of the representations appearing on the mask and of the inserted check or other document,
On total taking operations there is an idle operating cycle of the adding machine before total taking. On such idle stroke, film feed and exposure of the film will not occur sinceunder this idle operation I68 will not establish contact with I10. However, on the subsequent actual total printing operations the contact will be established and there will then be recorded on the film a representation of the total together with the character'of the total, the representation of the character of the total being obtained through the supplemental slide I20T.
The modified embodiment will now be described. According to the modified embodiment of the invention, two camera devices I56L and I56T are provided (see'Fig. 11). item listing entering operations photographic records are made by camera I56L, but when total data is to be recorded, camera ISGL is shifted out of exposing position and out of operation and camera I56T is shifted into exposing and operating position. With the two camera form of device, the camera I56T is the totaling camera and the camera I56L is the listing camera. These two cameras are mounted and secured together in a frame I16 (Figs. 11 and 13) which is slidably mounted in guideways. To shift the two cameras, links I15 are provided (Figs. 11 and 12) which connect with two levers I16 fixed to a rock shaft I11 having a cam follower I18 connected thereto cooperating with a cam I 18. Upon rotation of the cam I19 the camera I56L is carried away from exposing position and the camera I56T is brought to exposing position. The cameras are restored back to normal position with I56L in list position by a spring I80. Each of the cameras is provided with an individual clutch for driving the film feed and actuating the shutter. The clutch magnets are designated I61T and IIi1Lin Fig. 11. The clutch element MI (see Fig. 15) instead of being driven by gearing I60 direct from the vertical' drive shaft I38 as in the other embodiment is driven in the following manner. Fixed to each 'clutch element MI is a gear I80a which meshes order to shift the cameras a shift drive is provided which will now be described. Fixed to shaft I39, in the modified embodiment, adjacent the cam I19 is a gear I8I (Fig. 12) which drives a gear I 82 (Fig. 11) which is freely rotatable on the cam shaft I83. The pawl I 88 of the camera shifting one revolution clutch is adapted to be engaged with the notched element I85 of the one revolution clutch upon movement of armature I86. This armature is displaced by the energi'zation of the camerashifting clutch magnet I81.
Referring now to Fig. 9, on totaling operations link II6T is shifted to the right. The shift of On ordinary this link to the right will permit the three-blade contacts which comprise the contact pair I88 and I89 to shift to allow I88 to open and I89 to close.
Upon listing operations contacts I88 will remain closed and the circuit to the list camera clutch magnet I311. will be completed in a same man:
per as previo described for the other b K5 ment, 1. e from line through I 41L, contacts I88, I68, I10, I13 and I12 to the other side of the line. Upon listing operations the camera shift clutch magnet I81 will not become energized because contacts I89 do not become closed.
On totaling operations contacts I88 open and I contacts I89 become closed. The opening of contacts I88 prevents energization of the clutch magnet pertaining to the list camera and closure of contacts I89 permit the energization of both the total camera clutch magnet H11 and the camera shifting clutch magnet I81.
With the usual operation of the Burroughs machine on totaling operations there is an idle stroke before totaling. Photagraphic recording operations are suppressed on such idle stroke by reason of the contact I68 and segment strip I10. 011 the idle stroke I68 does not establish contact with I10 and accordingly the circuit cannot be completed to any of the clutch magnets or to the serial number magnet I34. However, on a totaling stroke the circuit will be established to the total camera clutch magnet I41T and to the camera shift clutch magnet I81. With the camera shift clutch magnet I81 energized, both cameras will be shifted so as to carry I56L away from exposing position and to bring I5BT into exposing position. The arrangement is such that the exposure is not made on camera I58T until this camera has been shifted to exposing position. A switch I90 can be provided which when in the position shown, provides for total recording by the total camera I461. With the switch placed in the dotted line position, both item records and total records will be recorded by the list camera "6L, In short this switch when in dotted line position makes the modified embodiment operate like the first described embodiment.
Referring to Fig. 16 this shows a fragmentary section of a film produced by the photographic recording section. On this section of film, 200 are the feed sprocket apertures in the film. The data represented at 20I represents a reproduction of a document. The data representations in zone 202 represents amounts set up from the hand setup devices. The data at zone 203 represents numerical data entered from the keyboard of the machine. In the upper photographic record the data at 204 represents the class of total operation and the data at 205 represents numerical result data derived from the accumulating section of the accounting machine.
The serial number reproduction is indicated at 206 and the supplementary data from the mask is indicated at 201. It will be understood that the completed film has photographic reproductions thereon at successively spaced intervals along the film and that the reproductions are in extremely compact form. The films used may be negative films or films which during development are reversed to positives. The film delineated is a positive.
What I claim is:
1. A combined photographic recording accounting machine with a photographic recording sectiorr including photographing recording means and-an accounting section with accounting elements, said photographic recording section including devices controlled from the accounting elements of the accounting section and representing variable control data, means in the photographic section under control of elements of the accounting machine for selectively controlling the photographing of representations of data according to whether the data represents entries into the accounting section of the machine or results computed by the accounting section of the machine.
2. The invention set forth in claim 1 in which a representing device is provided in the photographic recording section for controlling the photographing of designating data according to the kind or result data which is set up and derived from, the accounting machine, said representing device being under control of elements of the accounting machine.
3. The invention set forth in claim 1 in which means is provided for controlling selectively the making of one film record or another film record according to whether a record is to be of an item entered into the accounting machine or a result computed by the accounting machine.
4. The invention set forth in claim 1 in which the photographic recording section comprises two camera devices each with film feeding mechanism and exposure controlling means and including means for selectively calling the film feed and exposure means of one camera into operation while suppressing the action of such parts of the other camera.
'5. A combined photographic recording and accounting machine with a photographic recording section and an accounting section, said latter section including a main operating means and devices upon which data is set up, representing devices adapted to be photographed in the recording section which are controlled by the data set up devices of the accounting section, film feeding and exposure controlling means in the recording section, named means from the main operating means of the accounting section to feed and expose a length of film for each effective operation of the main operating means of the accounting section,-
and means for suppressing film feed and exposure in the event that the said representing devices are not displaced to significant figure representing position.
6. A machine of the class described, comprising in combination an accounting machine with item entry means therefor, a photographic recording section for making a photographic control record of accounting data derived from the accounting machine, and representing devices controlled by the item entry means of the accounting machine for setting up in the photographic recording section in proximity to an adjacent clear background and in variable relation thereto representations of numerical data to be photographed by the photographic recording section, said setup representing devices when variably disposed in an otherwise clear zone representing by their relative disposition therein the control value of such representations when photographed by the photographic recording section, and means for receiving, retaining and aligning a document having numerical data inscribed thereon in juxtaposition to the representing means for corresponding numerical data so that a reproduction of such document with its numerical data may be photographically made 7 upon a' common record in juxtaposition to the photographic control record of corresponding numerical data.
