Patented Aug. 6, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE i 2,210,21o a I COVERING FOR BEDDING Molly Kisilew, New York, N. Y.
Application November 25, 1938, Serial No. 242,335
1 Claim.
This invention relates to covers for bedding such as quilts, blankets, mattresses and the like for the purpose of keeping the article of bedding clean, sanitary and from wearing or fraying in use.
A particular object of the invention is to provide a covering or casing in which the article of bedding may be encased with little effort or in-- convenience so that, in the case of coverings for quilts or the like, both ends of the coveringmay be used. In present use, the coverings employed, consist of means for closing the covering at one end and this is objectionable because the closure end cannot be used as the closing means such as buttons or tapes rub the face and hence only the 15 opposite end of the closure can be used. This end soon wears or frays and has to be thrown away or patched, which latter is objectionable due to appearances. I contemplate making a covering having a number of novel features.
Further objects include a covering which has a side opening into which may be inserted a quilt, comforter or other bedding article and which is secured to the corners of the cover at the side edges thereof so that no projection is present along the opposite ends of the cover which would interfere with the use of both ends thereof in order to lengthen the life of the cover.
Another object is to provide a cover which has expandible sides and end so that as the cover is laundered, and shrinks, suitable pleats in the sides and ends thereof may be opened to compensate for the shrinkage, the opening of the pleats being facilitated by the use of a chain sewing stitch which renders it easy for the housewife to open the pleat. Further, the cover may be provided with tabs for attachment to the article of bedding covered so that the latter will not bulge or crumple inside the cover and will remain flat, presenting a neat flat appearance at all times. 40 Further, in the use of mattress covers, means are provided for the turning of the mattress which will not interfere with the expanding feature of the cover. A still further object is to provide a cover having a singlepiece center strip portion 45 which presents unbroken surfaces at the opposite ends of the cover so that the same presents no rough edge to the face of the person in bed.
Changes and variations may be made in the constructions shown in the drawing without de- 50 parting from the principles of the invention or sacrificing its chief advantages; hence such invention is not to be confined to the precise structures shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a cover for use with bedding, parts of the cover being broken away to disclose the means employed in securing the cover and bedding together,
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 showing the position of the tabs, 5
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 showing the end formation of the cover,
Figure 4 is a view in perspective showing a cover used particularly with a mattress, one flap end being turned back to disclose the method of closing the cover after a mattress has been placed therein,
Figure 5 is an enlarged section on the line 5-5 of Figure 4 showing the construction of the flap end and means of adjusting the same,
Figure 6 is a view in perspective taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 4 showing the pleat employed in compensating for shrinkage'of the cover due to washing or cleaning,
Figure 7 is a fragmentary section showing the pleat opened out, and
Figure 8 is a perspective view showing tabs for attaching the covering to the bedding so that the latter can be handled without bundling or crumpling within the cover.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 5 indicates a cover for an article of bedding such as a blanket, quilt, mattress or the like made up from a center piece 6 of material presenting upper and lower or under panels 1 and ends 8 made preferably from a single piece of material suitably joined at its ends as by sewing and having sewn thereto the portions 9 forming sides I!) and side tabs II. The latter are disposed adjacent the ends of the cover 5 and have button hole openings I2 for attachment of the cover to the article of bedding through the medium of buttons l3 sewn to the latter. One of the sides I0 is provided with an opening I closed by a flexible closure means N5 of the zipper type or by suitable buttons or tapes whichever is preferred.
With the foregoing construction, it is evident that the bedding member cannot crumple-within the cover because it is secured at four corners by the tabs II and buttons. The cover 5 due to its construction feature presents smooth unbroken ends with the result that either can be used next to the face of the one occupying the bed and also when the cover at one end becomes worn, it can be swung around to bring the unworn end to the head of the bed. The tabs being along the side edges of the cover do-not present any roughness at the ends of the cover and keep the cover smooth and flat.
In the form of the invention illustrated, the
features of the cover may be used in connection with the mattress cover I! which is made from a single piece of material l8 presenting upper and under panels l9 and 20 respectively and ends 2! and 22, the latter of which is adjustable relatively to the upper panel l9 through the medium of an apron portion 23 which extends over the edge of the panel l9-to engage in suitable button-holes, either of a plurality of sets of transversely arranged buttons 24 sewn to the panel I9 adjacent one end thereof. The sets of buttons are spaced,
apart to allow the shrinkage of the cover to be taken up and to this end, the cover end 2| is provided with a longitudinal pleat 25 formed with a chain stitch 26. The cover is completed by sides 26A which are also pleated lengthwise as at 2'5, the pleats being held closed by a chain stitch 28 which can be readily pulled out to release the pleat after the cover has been washed or cleaned to compensate for shrinkage. In order to facilitate the handling or turning of the mattress I provide the straps 30 which are sewn to the meeting edges of the parts l9 and 20, and are provided with a pleat 3| which is tucked in under the pleat 21. Straps are provided at opposite .sides of the cover and are long enough to allow for-the opening of the pleat without holding the cover as illustrated in Figure '7, in outline. The pleating of the strap permits it to be tucked beneath the pleat 2'! so that it is out of the way and does not cause any bulge in the sides of the bedclothing.
The cover may be provided with tabs 32 which secure the said cover to the mattress by buttons on the latter to prevent the cover from shifting or bunching on the mattress to make the bed uncomfortable. These tabs 32 have the same arrangement as the tabs ll of the quilt cover and are out of the way so that the buttons cannot be felt by one lying in bed.
The apron portion 23 is turned under at its edge as at 34 to provide a reinforce so that the buttons will not pull out. This is also true of the end of panel [9 in which the outer row of buttons is secured so that danger of the buttons pulling out is obviated. In both positions of adjustment either or both reinforce portions 34 and 34A function, the reinforce 34A being on the end of part I9.
It is evident that the buttons and tabs of the cover 5 are out of the way and do not interfere with the sleeper in any way.
What I claim is:
In a cover for bedding, in combination, a casing providing upper and lower panels and side and end portions joining said panels, one of the side portions presenting an opening through which bedding may be inserted into said cover and a closure for the said opening and tabs interiorly of the casing constituting attaching means for holding the corners of the casing in place at the corners of the bedding.
