COVER HOLDER FOR CIGAR BOXES Filed Aug 1, 1958 UNITED STATES COVER. HOLDER FOR CIGAR BOXES William G. Roper, Birmingham, Ala., assignor of one-half to Albert S. Taylor, Birmingham,
Ala.
Application August 1, 1938, Serial No. 222,342
1 Claim.
My invention relates to cover holders for cigar boxes and has for an object the provision of means adapted to hold the cover of a cigar box in an open position and which also acts to resist movement of the cover in either direction once the cover is disposed in proper opened position to display the merchandise and the label usually mounted on the under-side of the cover.
My invention further contemplates the provision of a cover holder for cigar boxes which is inexpensive in construction, simple in operation, and which will not readily get out of order.
My invention embodies other novel features, details of construction and arrangement of parts which are hereinafter set forth in the specification and claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part thereof, wherein:
Fig, 1 is a side elevational view showing a cigar box provided with one form of my invention for holding the cover in opened position;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 and showing the box cover in closed position;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan view showing the manner of fastening the cover holder to the box cover;
Fig. 4 is a detail plan view showing the spring wire cover holder;
Fig. 5 is a detail side elevational View showing the fastening members employed for securing the ends of the spring wire members to the box and cover;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side elevational view showing a modified form of cover holder applied to a. cigar box and holding the cover in opened position;
Fig. '7 is a view similar to Fig. 6 in which the cover is shown in closed position;
Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view taken along the side walls l2, end walls l3 and I4, a cover 16, and
an advertising label I! which serves as a hinge connection for the cover. The cover holder I8 is formed of spring wire and comprises a straight body portion l9 and eyes 2| and 22 formed on the of the usual construction comprising a bottom I l,
ends of the body portion. A right angle bend is formed near one end of the body portion at 23 to cause the wire to snugly engage in the notch 24 formed in the side wall 26 of the cover. While any suitable means may be employed for secur- 5 ing the ends of the wire member to the box and cover, I show a fastener 21 having a body portion 28 and preformed flange 29 which engages in the eyes 2| or 22 and is then pressed through the cover or side wall of the box; after which, the 30 unflanged end of the fastener is'peened over to form another flange 3| as indicated in dotted outline in Fig. 5.
Referring now to Figs. 6 and 7 I show a modified form of my invention in which, the cover 15 holder is formed of wire having a body portion 33 and an eye portion 34 formed at one end thereof to receive a nail 36 which is driven into the side of the cover E6. The other end of the body portion is formed with an offset portion 3'! and a 20 hook portion 38 which engage in a staple 39 to prevent backward or forward movement of the cover when the cover is in its opened position. When the cover is being opened or closed the body portion of the cover holder is caused to be bent 25 as indicated by the dotted outline at 40.
Referring now to Fig. 9 I show another modified form of my invention in which the body portion 4! of the cover holder 42 is formed with an eye 43 at one end to receive a nail 36 and 30 the other end of the body portion is bent at 44 to form a hook eye 46 having a downwardly and inwardly projecting finger 41. As the box cover is being opened the body portion moves through the staple until one leg of the staple 35 passes under the spring finger 41; after which, the cover is held against either forward or rearward movement until the spring finger is lifted upwardly and moved downwardly past the engaged leg of the staple. In all forms of my invention the cover is held in its closed position by a suitable locking means such as a nail 48" which extends through the cover and into the end wall M of the box.
Referring now to Fig. 10 I show another modified form of my invention. This form is similar to the one shown in Fig. 1 except that the eye 22 is omitted and replaced by bending the wire holder 5| outwardly at 52 to be received in the eye 21 and then bending the eye at right angles at 53. 50
While I have shown my invention in several forms it is obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited but is susceptible of various changes and modifications without departing from the spirit thereof; and I desire, therefore, 5
that only such limitations shall be placed thereupon as are imposed by the prior art.
I claim:
The combination with a box having a cover hinged thereto, of a spring wire lying in a single plane and extending in a direct path from one edge portion of the cover to the adjacent side wall of the box, one end of the wire being anchored to the edge portion of the cover and the other end being anchored to the adjacent side wall of the box whereby closing of the cover moves the said anchored ends toward each other causing bodily movement and bending of the wire in a single plane.
WILLIAM G. ROPER.
