Description

July 23, 1940. w. T. FALLON TIE FORMER Filed April 29, 1939 fl INVENTOL BY Patented July 23, 1940 TIE FORMER William T. Fallon, Douglaston, Long Island, N
Application April 29, 1939, Serial No. 270,751
1 Claim.
My present invention relates to mens furnishings, and has particular reference to a novel tie former for facilitating the proper knotting of a tie.
It is the principal object of my invention to provide a convenient tie former for use in facilitating the knotting of a tie.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a simple arrangement for insuring the formation of a centrally positioned dimple in the tie adjacent the knotted portion thereof.
Another object of my invention is to provide a simple device which may be readily manufactured at low cost, and which can be sold at a reasonable price.
With the above and other objects and advantageous features in view, the invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, and more specifically defined in the claim appended thereto.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 represents a view showing a knotted tie, with the novel tie former in place;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the novel tie former, the parts being in open position; and
Fig. 3 is a side view thereof, the parts being in relatively closed position.
It has been found desirable to provide .a tie former which may be readily attached to the tie during the knotting operation, and which holds the tie in position so that the completed knot will provide a centrally positioned dimple in the front portion of the tie.
I have devised a simple and inexpensive contrivance which may be readily attached to the tie during the knotting process, and which may be readily removed therefrom after the tie has been knotted.
Referring to the drawing, the tie in its knotted form is indicated at A, and the novel tie former is designated [0. The tie former includes an upper plate portion II, a lower plate portion l2, and a handle l3, the upper plate portion being corrugated so as to provide a centrally positioned and relatively sharp V-cut l4, and the lower portion being similarly corrugated, and having two relatively sharp curves l5 and a central rounded portion l6 therebetween. Each of the plate portions II and I2 is preferably of tapered form, the plate portions being broad at the rear end, and tapering towards the front as disclosed in Fig. l; the handle I3 is preferably made of resilient spring wire, with its ends respectively soldered or otherwise secured to the upper and pressure on the handle is released, the two plate members will return to relatively closed position. In using the novel tie former, the tie is first knotted loosely, and the tie former is then clamped closely adjacent the knot, and over the front tie portion, which is received between the upper plate portion l I and lower plate portion 12. The tension of the coil ll presses the plate portions and thus corrugates the upper portion of the tie which is received therebetween; the tie knot is now completed, the knotting process drawing the tie portion forwardly, but without ironing out the dimple resulting from the coacting upper and lower plate portions, whereby the novel tie dimple former may be removed after the tie is completely formed to leave the upper portion of the tie with a perfectly formed, centrally positioned dimple.
While I have disclosed a specific embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that changes in the shape of the dimple forming members, inv the shape of the handle part,..and in the arrangement for releasably retaining the dimple forming members in proper pressing position and for permitting their separation to facilitate placing of the upper portion of the tie therebetween and withdrawal of the tie former from the knotted tie, may be made without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention as defined in the appendedclaim.
I claim:
As a new article of manufacture, a tie former comprising a corrugated top plate tapering towards one end, the corrugations being of an inverted W shape and forming two Vs joined at their adjacent edges, to provide a centrally positioned and relatively sharp V out, a bottom plate having complementary,corrugations and being tapered similarly to the top plate and having two sharp curves at the apices of the Vs and a central rounded curve at the joined adjacent edges of thevs, and means for resiliently and releasably retaining said plates in superimposed relation.
