2 Claims.
This invention relates to presses, and in parv m linked at an intermediate point with the platen.
Another object is to provide a press having .a
platen which is of great length in proportion to its width, wherein the force from the plunger is transmitted to this elongated platen by me'ans 15 of a plurality of substantially horizontal levers mounted upon fixed pivots at one end of each lever and connected to the plunger at the opposite end of each lever, the connection with the,
platen being made at an intermediate point.
Another object is to provide a press having a hydraulic plunger and a platen interconnected by a system of levers and links in such a manner that the force is transmitted to the platen near the ends thereof, but is received from a'plunger a substantially above the middle of the platen.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of one embodiment of a press according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the press shown 39 in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, but with the press frame broken away to disclose the mechanical connections more clearly.
Figur 4 is a modification of the press shown 35 in Figures 1' and 2, with the frame partly broken away to disclose the mechanical construction.
In general, the press of this. invention consists of an elongated platen vertically reciprocable in a frame having a hydraulic plunger mounted in the top member of the frame. The hydraulic plunger is connected by links to the inner ends of substantially horizontal levers pivoted at their outer ends to the frame, and connected by intermediate links to the platen. 43 Referring to the drawings in detail. Figure 1 shows one embodiment of the press of this inven-v tionns consisting of a frame having side members i interconnected by a bed or base member I i and a top member l2. Mounted in the top member l2 (Cl. loo-so I! of the motor 20, as by the coupling 2|. The hydraulic circuit may be of any conventional type, and forms no part of the present invention. The crosshead I5 is provided with pivot shafts 22, to which are connected the upper ends of vertical links 23, the lower ends of which are pivotally connected to pivot shafts 24 passing through the bored inner ends of substantially horizontal levers 25. The levers 25 are pivoted at their outer ends upon shafts 26, mounted in the frame side members Ill so that the levers 25 rock up and down about the pivot shafts 26, in accordance with the action of the plunger II as transmitted thereto by the crosshead l5 and links 23.
At intermediate points the levers 25 are pro- 1 vided with pivot shafts 21, to which are connected the upper ends of vertical links 28, the lower ends of which are pivotally mounted upon pivot shafts 28 mounted in the platen 30. The latter reciprocates vertically relatively to the frame side members It, and is guided by the guide members 3| secured thereto. The contact portion 32 of the platen and the corresponding contact portion 33 on the bed may be of any suitable configuration. In the drawings they are shown as consisting of elongated elements having grooves therealong. This type of press is occasionally referred to by those skilled in the hydraulic art as a bending brake." "The modification shown in Figure 4' employs single links 34, having an H-shape form, the side bars 35 being connected by the bridge member 38. This construction increases the rigidity of the mechanism and reduces cross thrusts, and is used in place of the links 28 in Figures 1 to 3, inclusive. It will be understood that in place of the H-shaped single links 34, shown in Figure 4, Y- shaped single links may also be used. These Y- shaped links will provide a' similar measure 0 rigidity.
It will be understood that I desire to comprehend within this invention such modifications as come within the scope of the claims and the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
i. In combination in a press, a frame, a cylinder mounted thereon, a piston in said cylinder, 9. crosshead on said piston, a platen reciprocable relatively to said frame, a pair of inwardly directed levers having their outer ends pivotally mounted on said frame, a first link pivotally connecting the inner end of each lever to said crosshead, and a second link pivotally connecting an intermediate pivot in each lever with a pivot on said platen, the inner, outer and intermediate pivots on each lever being disposed in a straight line, said links being parallel to each other. and substantially perpendicular to the pivot line of said levers ,in one position of said platen, whereby to transmit the maximum thrusts from said crosshead to said platen and to minimize the production of oblique thrusts.

In combination in a press, a frame, a cylinder mounted thereon, a piston in saidcylinder, a crosshead on said piston having pivots spaced on opposite sides of the center line of said piston, a platen reciproc'able relatively to said frame, a pair of inwardly directed levers havingtheir outer ends pivotally mounted on said frame, a first link pivotally connecting the inner end of each lever to said crosshead at the crosshead pivot on the same side of the piston center line as the respective link, and a second link pivotally connecting an intermediate pivot in each lever with a pivot on said platen, the inner, outer and intermediate pivots on each lever being disposed in a straight line, said links being parallel to each other and substantially perpendicular to the pivot line of said levers in one position of said platen, whereby
