'I'his invention relates to calculating machines and is particularly concerned with the printing mechanism thereof whereby so-called safeguard symbols or characters may be automatically printed to the left of the printed amount in order to prevent alteration of the amounts as entered.
The invention is particularly adaptable for use incheck-writing machines and such and may be considered as an improvement over the mechanisms disclosed and described in the Bentzel Patent No. 1,958,464 and the Muller Patent No. 1,997,073 although the invention is illustrated as applied to a different type of machine. As stated in these two prior patentsv it is frequently desirable to be able to print characters in the higher orders to the left of the printed amount including printing a currency sign in the highest order to the left, all without affecting printing of zeros in those same banks if they should lie to the right of the last order indexed when some other amount is printed.
It is a general object of the invention to provide an improved calculating machine.
A more particular object is to provide a calculating machine in which the character or safeguard printing automatically occurs in the desired columns in both listing and totaling operations, and regardless of which register is being utilized in a multiple registermachine and of course regardless of whether the printing occurs in response to amounts indexed by key` depression or in response to the totals contained in a register.

General construction The invention is illustrated as applied to a Burroughs calculating machine which may be 15 used as a bookkeeping machine and also as a checkwriting machine. This type of machine is well known in the commercial eld and is illustrated in many patents, one type of such machine being shown in the Gooch Patent No. 20 1,395,044, issued October 25, 1921.
Referring to Fig. 1, the illustrated machine may be either a hand operated or power driven machine and is provided with nine banks of depressible amount keys I, the number of banks 25 being varied in different machines to suit the requirements. Items are entered by ldepressing the keys and as each key is depressed its stern is moved into the path of a projection 2 of its associated index bar 3. These index bars which 30 connect the type sectors and register actuator racks as will be described later correspond in number to the orders or banks of amount keys are supported for horizontal movement, are normally urgediorward or to the right (Fig. 1) by 35 springs, and are provided at their forward ends with toothed actuator racks 4 and 5 which are slidingly attached to the bars by pin and slot connections which permit of one stepof movement of the racks relative to the bars, as de- 40 scribed in the Peters Patent No. 1,255,821. Thisrelative movement between the racks and bars is primarily for the purpose of a tens transfer but is taken advantage of for an additional purpose in the present invention. Racks 4 and 5 en- 45 gage an upper register or cross footer 6 and a lower' register l, respectively, although a single register only may be employed, if desired. Each of the registers 6 and 1, when two registers are employed, are moved into and out of engagement 50 with the toothed racks 4 and 5, respectively, in proper time relation by a mechanism similar to that disclosed in the Gooch Patent-No. 1,327,318 or may be moved by mechanism similar to that shown in the Peters Patent No. 1,255,821, or as 55 orders which are not indexed by key vby a h d crank illustrated in my co-pending application. The normal position of the type sectors of the six highest orders is with the end ,or character type at the printing line and the cipher type one space below the printing line, and of the three lower orders; with the blank spaces at the printing line and the cipher type one space below the printing line so that, if printing were to occur with all type in their normal or home positions, characters would be printed in the six higher orders but nothing would be printed in the three lower orders. When the machine is operated either by hand or motor power all type sectors shift one type space to move orders to the printing line. The type carrying sectors of the highest six orders are then returned to character printing position in those depression or by the register pinions.

Referring to Fig. 8, :or a slightly different type of transaction a single amount is entered upon the keyboard with thev carriage in the second columnar position, and the lreys remain depressed through the remaining operations as the carriage tabulates for repeat operations in the three columnar positions of the check in which the variable hammer bloclr mechanism 'functions as mentioned' in connection with Fig. 'l' and in which characters or symbols are printed to the left of the last indexed bank in the rst and last columnar positions of the check. These two types of worlr which may be performed upon the machine illustrate thatA the character printing occurs to the left of the highest indexed order regardless of whether the printing is in response to the register pinions or depressed amount keys. This is accomplished by placing the character printing under control of the type sectors or index bar or rack movement.
Character printing to the left of the highest order indexed The printing of characters or "safeguard printing is placed under control of movement of the type sectors or indexing bars which remain in normal or home position until after operation of the machine has started. After movement of the index bars beyond cipher position, the safeguard symbol mechanisms aremade effective. 'I'his arrangement makes it possible to adapt this feature to all types of machines with one or more registers and to utilize the feature in connection with total printing and/or listing. In other words, the invention is very exible.
As previously stated, the illustrated machine is a nine column printing capacity machine and all type sectors above the dollars order are provided with an asterisk or character type, except the highest order which is provided with a dollar sign type, located directly above the zero type. In Fig. 2, two orders, the third and ninth or highest7 of the machine are illustrated, two non-adjacent columns being selected in order to show the mechanisms more clearly.
Each index bar 3 is provided with a flat stud 20 projecting laterally from its left side and overlying a pawl 2| pivoted at 22 to a bracket 23 and urged' counterclockwise by a spring 24. Counterclockwise movement of pawl 2| is limited by its downwardly projecting lug 25 engaging a xed'bar 26. The bracket 23 is secured to a plate 2'! supported on two shafts 28 slidably supported at thefront and rear by brackets 29. Secured to shafts 28 adjacent their rear ends is a cross bar 3| to which is secured the forward end of a link 32, the latter being supported for horizontal movement by a shaft 33. The rear end of link 32 is provided with an unstanding foot 34 in position to be engaged by a stud 35 Vcarried by an arm 36 secured to the main driving shaftl 31. Intermediate its endslink 32 is also provided with an upstanding arm 38 which carries a stud 39 in position to engage a cam 4|] journaled on the secondary shaft 4| Vand connected by a spring 42 to an arm 43 xed to shaft 4i. This provides a yielding connection between cam d and shaft 4| for purposes later to be described.
Plate 27 together with bar 3|, shafts 28, brackets 23 and pawls 2| constitute an assembly which is normally urged to the rear or to the left (Fig. 2) by tension springs 45. The assembly is normally prevented from moving to the rear by engagement of stud 39 with cam 40 which holds link 32 and the bar 3| with the attached assembly in its forward position;
As the machine is given a stroke of operation either by depressing a motor bar or pulling upon Aan operating handleall the index bars 3 are released for forward movement. In those orders not indexed by depression of the amount keys. the bars move forwardly a distance of one type which is sulcient to move the type sectors from their normal or home position to zero or cipher printing position (Fig. 4) In those orders which v are indexed by depression of an amount key, the
bars move to full indexed position (Fig. 5). As previously stated, no movement of the racks 4 or the register pinons occurs in those orders in which the bars are moved from normal to zero printing position because of the slotted connection between the index bars and the racks. Studs 20 of those bars which have been moved beyond zero position will have moved beyond the rear edge of shoulder pieces 41 (Fig. 5) and will be rotated clockwise and permit the stud 39 to drop first `to the low portion of the cam which permits pawls 2| to move away from bar 26 whereby pawls 2| will be rocked counterclockwisc by their springs into engagement with studsv 20. After this movement and upon further operation of the machine, cam 40 rotates clear of stud 39. This will permit springs 45 to retract plate 21 and its associated assembly, including pawls 2|. As pawls 2| move rearwardly under infiuence of their springs 24, they will engage. those studs 20 of actuators which were moved to zero position only and will return those actuators rearward to normal position with the character type at the printing line. It will be understood. of course, that as the machine is Operated and as shaft 41 is rotated main shaft 31 will also be rotated and withdraw lstud 35 from foot 34 of slide 32 and that the registers are not engaged with the actuator character printing position during the forward machine stroke and before printing occurs. On the other hand, the fth and sixth orders containing the digits of value are moved to and remain in their indexed 2 and l positions, respectively.
It is not desirable to have a character inserted between the gures of the printed amount and accordingly the printing of characters is disabled to the right of the highest order indexed. For example, although the fourth order `is not indexed beyond its zero position, it remains at zero position instead of being returned to character printing position. This is accomplished by a lateral projection 50 which' projects from the left side of each pawl 2| and underlies a projection 5| extending from the right of each adjacent higher order pawl. Y Accordingly, in an order where the pawl 2| is not allowed to rock counterclockwise because the stud 20 of an indexed rack overlies the pawl, its projection 5| will prevent rocking of pawl 2l in the next adjacent lower order and so on down through the lower orders excepting the first threeorders of the machine, which, of course, have no character type. By this means all pawls 2| associated with all orders (excepting the three lowest' orders) below the highest indexed order to the left will be prevented from rocking coun'terolockwise and will accordingly be prevented from becoming effective; that is, the pawls 2| of all orders to the right of the highest indexed order to the left will be disabled.
As previously stated near the end of the for`` ward machine stroke cam 40 clears stud 39 and link 32 moves rearwardly until limited by engagement with stop 52 during which time all type bars tothe left of the amount indexed are Gli returned from their zero printing to their character printing position. At the extreme end of the forward machine stroke printing occurs after which the machine is restored to normal position. Although cam 40 is positively driven in a clockwise direction during the forward machine stroke, cam 40 can yield during the return stroke, because of a spring 42 and will retain the assembly moved by plate 21 in rearward position until the extreme end of the returned strok At this time stud 35 on the main driving shaft 31 engages the footed end 34 of link 32 and restores link 32 and the assembly carried by plate 21, against the action of springs 45, to its forward or normal position. As link 32 moves forwardly stud 39 will also move forwardly and permit spring it to return cam 40 clockwise to its normal position rearwardly of stud 39.
Carriage control Provision is made for carriage control of character printing to the left of the highest order indexed. It will be understood from the invention thus far described that the slide 21 and its assembly is moved rearwardly and returned to normal position at each machine operation. Accordingly, if the printing hammers werereleased at each machine operation printing would occur and characters would be printed to the left of the highest order indexed at each machine operation. A carriage control of the printing hammers is provided whereby character printing is restricted to certain columnar positions of the carriage.
For this purpose the traveling paper carriage C (Fig. l.) is provided with rollers 15 positioned on the carriage so as to engage one arm of a crank 1t in predetermined columnar positions of the carriage. Crank it is pivoted at if! and its other arm is connected to the upper end of a vertical link 13, the lower end of which is connected to one arm of a crank 19 pivoted at il@ to the frame of the machine. Another arm of crank 1S is connected to a horizontal link Ubi (Figs. i and 2) which extends toward the front of the machine where it is connected to one arm of a fcrank B2 pivoted at t3 to a bracket ed. The
other arm of crank d2 is provided with a horizontal extension Bt positioned to engage the foot of a pawl 81 pivoted to -the hammer latch 03l .of an intermediate order, the dollars order in the illustrated machine which order is operated in v every Operation of the machine. lit will be understood that the pawl 81 could be pivoted to any desired hammer latch and is attached to the dollars order in the present machine because the illustrated machine is designed particularly for check writing purposes. Paw] di! is provided with a lateral extension 8i? which spans the remaining intermediate printing hammers and engages a Yshoulder of a pawl 9@ pivoted to latch [I3 for the highest order printing hammer. For sake of clearness, several orders of the hammers and associated mechanism have been omitted from Fig. 2 and it will be seen from. this figure that extension 89 of pawl Si extends from the third or dollars order to the ninth or highest order and skips the intervening orders. As previously stated, to prevent or disable the printing of characters to the left of the highest indexed order carriage rollA 15 is positioned so as to engage crank 16 in each columnar position in which itis desired to eliminate character printing. The effect of such a roll is to rock crank 82 counterclockwise (Fig. 2) which will cause its foot 86 to raise pawl 81 and disengage its extension 89 from pawl 90. When pawl 81 is in raised position, release of hammer latch I3 of the third or dollars order will not cause a release of the hammer latch i3 of the highest order or of the .intervening orders between the highest order and the dollars order.
Variable hammer block mechanism It will be observed from Figs. '1 and 8 that in, the rst column of the check, printing of the cents is omitted and in the second column of the check, printing of the dollars is omitted. This-is accomplished by the variable hammer block mechanism which in the illustrated machine comprises a four-bladed shaft mi) (Fig. 2) positioned over fingers loi projecting forwardly from the type hammers. The blades of the shaft are formed and cut out so as to block or latch certain desired hammers in each position of the shaft toprevent their release even though the hammer latches may be released. Shaft imi is rotated by means of a gear M32 on the end of the shaft which engages a rack i033, the latter being moved in ac- `cordance with and under control of the carriage. For this purpose rack M93 is connected to a horizontal pivoted lever idd extending to the rear of the machine where it is connected by a vertical link tot to a control cam ilii'rl engaged by different usized rolls tilt on the carriage which cause rack M33, gear (IM and bla/des iii@ to be rotated to its four different positions corresponding to the carriage positions.
The illustrated machine is particularly well suited for printing cancelled checks where the checks are printed in strip form and it is desired to cancel some intermediate check as, for example, where the amount involved would be less than a dollar and it is not desired to issue a check for less than a dollar. 'lf'he present machine provides that a series of zeros can be printed in the first three columns, and characters printed in the higher orders to automatically cancel the check. This' can be accomplished by causing the 4hammers to Jdre during each and every operation of the machine regardless of whether an amount was indexed or not. To accomplish this it is merely necessary to omit the lug it of the hammer latch pawl it of the third or dollars order so that the hammer of this order fires atl each operation. This would of course, cause printing of zeros in the third and lower orders and printing of characters in the highest and intermediate orders between the highest order and the dollars order.

In a calculating machine having a plurality of depressible keys, a plurality of index bars associated therewith, the combination with a plural order printing mechanism comprising printing type having character type in the higher orders, means for normally conditioning said printing mechanism to print to the right and not to the left of the' last order in which a digit is indexed, of means conditioned by an intermediate order mechanism of the machine moved during a machine operation and automatically operable directly upon a non-adjacent higher order mechanism of the machine to cause said printing type to printa character in said higher order.

In a calculating machine having a plurality of depresslble keys, 'a plurality of index bars associated therewith, the combination with a plural order printing mechanism comprising printing type having character type in the higher orders, means for normally conditioning said printing mechanism to print to the right and not to the left of the last order in whicha digit is indexed, of means controlled by an intermediate order mechanism of the machine moved during the machine operation non-adjacent to the highest order mechanism of the machine and automatically operable directly upon the highest order mechanism of the machine to cause said printing type te print a character in said highest order.

In a calculating machine having a plurality of banks of depressible amount keys, a plurality of differentially movable racks controlled by said amount keys, a plural order printing mechanism comprising type sectors having digit, cipher, and special character types thereon and adapted to print along a printing line, said type sectors having a normal home position with the end type thereon at the printing line, connecting members between said racks and said type carriers, said connecting members being constructed and arranged to permit the type carriers to move one step from their normal positions before movement of said racks to present the type adjacent the end type to the printing line, and means for returning to home position the type carriers and connecting members in those orders in which no digit from l to 9 is indexed and which are at a predetermined side of the highest order type carrier which is set to print a digit from l to 9.

The combination in a calculating machine having means for giving it cycles of operation, a plurality of banks of amount keys, an index bar for each bank controlled by the keys of its bank, a type bar operatively connected to each index bar, said type bars normally being positioned with blank spaces along the printing line and all of said type bars normally being moved one space relative to said printing line during a machine cycle to bring Gs to the printing line in all orders where digits are ndt indexed, and a printing mechanism normally operable during a machine cycle to cause printing only in orders to the right of the highest order in which a digit is indexed; of special character type positioned in the blank spaces on certain of the higher orders of said type bars, means controlled by said index bars and operating during a machine cycle to cause all the type bars in the orders above the highest order in which a digit is indexed to be returned to normal prior to a printing operation,
normally ineiective printing control means governed by an intermediate lower order ol said printing mechanism for causing the printing mechanism to operate' in all the orders higher than said intermediate order, and means for rendering said printing control means effective, whereby special characters will be printed to the left in the orders 'above the highest order in which a digit is indexed.
