A tooth 35 is formed integral with the inner end of the head 34, and is provided with one abrupt wall 35 and an oppositely formed inined wall 31. The head 34 is formed rigid with a stem 38 extending outwardly through a combined bearing and latch block 39 fitted and secured within the outer end of the tubular part 355 by a retaining pin 40. A combined selector and latch device M is rigidly attached to the outer end of the stem 38 and is formed with a tooth d2 adapted to engage in notches 43 in the outer end of the part 33 and in the block 39. A spring i iencircles the stem 38 between the head 3 and the block 39 and functions to press the head 3 in a direction to engage the tooth 35 with the teeth 28. I
When there is resistance to rotation of the shaft 95, as when the punch 22 is in contact with the work, the frame 29 may be turned in one direction without turning said shaft Hi. This is because the inclined wall 31 of the tooth 35 will slide against and over the teeth 28, the spring 44 yielding to permit necessary movement of the ratchet device. However, when the frame 29 is turned in the opposite direction, the abrupt wall 35 will positively engage the respective teeth 28 and thereby turn the shaft it.
As may be understood by a comparison of Figs. 4 and 5, the position of the ratchet device may be reversed in order to rotate the shaft I B in reverse directions. In the adjustment shown in 4, the shaft !6 will be rotated in a clockwise direction; and, in the adjustment shown in Fig. 5, the shaft will be rotated in a counterclockwise direction when the ratchet device engages the teeth 28 of the sleeve 21.
A radial socket 65 is formed integral with the frame 29 and preferably adjacent to and integral with the extension 33, and is designed and adapted to receive one end of an operating lever or bar for actuating the operating mechanism to rotate the shaft it. By oscillation of such an operating lever or bar, the frame 29 may be rocked about the sleeve 21 to impart successive turning movements to said sleeve and thereby to the shaft it, the ratchet device escaping over the teeth 28 of the sleeve 27 during return or ineffective movement of the parts.
In this device, the operating mechanism may be permanently or detachably secured to the polygonal portion 26 of the shaft l6. Preferably, the operating mechanism is detachable from said shaft in order to facilitate carrying of the device from place to place.
It should be apparent that the invention attains all of its intended objects and purposes very efficiently and. satisfactorily, and may be varied within the scope of equivalent limits without departure from the nature and principle of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a portable punch comprising a metallic frame of approximately C-shape having enlarged axially alined die and punch supporting portions at its ends, and a die attached to said die supportmay be 29 and ing portion; a shaft screwed through said punch supporting portion for movement toward and from said die and having a punch attached to the inner end thereof for cooperation with said die, a ratchet sleeve attached to the outer end of said shaft for rotating the same, an annular frame enclosing and rotative about said ratchet sleeve, a pawl supported by said frame for engaging and turning said sleeve and thereby said shaft in one direction by turning movements of said frame and arranged to escape about and leave said sleeve stationary when said frame is turned in the oposite direction, a device for moving said pawl to reverse position to turn said sleeve and thereby said shaft in the opposite direction, and means rigid with said frame for engaging a lever bar for operating said frame to rotate said shaft.
2. In a portable punch comprising a metallic frame having enlarged axially alined die and punch supporting portions at its ends, and a die attached to said die supporting portion; a. shaft screwed through said punch suporting portion for movement toward and from said die and having a punch attached to the inner end thereof for cooperation with said die, a sleeve attached to the outer end of said shaft, a circumferential series of teeth integral with said sleeve, an annular frame enclosing and wholly supported by said sleeve, means in conection with said frame 00- operating with said teeth to prevent displacement of said frame relative to said sleeve, a pawl supported by said frame for engaging and turning said sleeve in one direction by turning movements of said frame in said direction and arranged to escape about and leave said sleeve stationary when said frame is turned in the opposite direction, a spring for engaging said pawl with said teeth on said sleeve, and means for manually turning said pawl to and latching said pawl in diiferent adjusted positions for operation to turn said sleeve in either direction as desired.
3. In a portable punch comprising a metallic frame having enlarged axially alined die and punch supporting portions at its ends, and a die attached to said die supporting portion; a shaft screwed through said punch supporting portion and having a punch attached to the inner end thereof for cooperation with said die, a sleeve attached to the outer end of said shaft for retating the same, a series of circumferential ratchet teeth integral with said sleeve, a frame enclosing and rotative about said sleeve, means rigid with said frame engaging the ends of said teeth and holding said frame about said sleeve, a tubular radial extension integral with said frame, a pawl mounted in said extension for engaging and turning said sleeve in one direction by turning movements of said frame in one di rection and leaving said sleeve stationary when said frame is turned in the opposite direction, a spring for actuating said pawl into engagement with said sleeve, and a manually adjustable latch device for holding said pawl in adjusted position to turn said sleeve in either direction as desired by operation of said frame. In a portable punch comprising a metallic frame having enlarged axially alined die and punch supporting portions at its ends, and a die attached to said die supporting portion; a shaft screwed through said punch supporting portion and having a punch attached to the inner end thereof for cooperation with said die, a sleeve attached to the outer end of said shaft, a circumferential series of ratchet teeth integral with said sleeve, an annular frame enclosing and rotative about said sleeve, a flange integral with said frame engaging one end of said ratchet teeth, a ring secured within the opposite'end of said frame engaging the opposite end of said teeth from said flange, a tube integral with said frame'pawl mechanism supported in said tube for engagingv deintegral with said frame and tube for engagement with an and turning said sleeve in either direction as sired, and a socket disalined from said operating lever.
