This invention relates to a material handling apparatus constituted as a hoist adapted to be manually operated.
An object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, eiicient, novel and improved manually operable hoist equipped to be selectively operated at different speeds.
A further object is to provide a material handling apparatus wherein will be incorporated various improved features, and characteristics of Y construction novel both as individual entities of the' material handling apparatus and in 4combina-- tion with each other.
And a further object is to provide a material handling apparatus constituted as a hoist constructed as hereinafter set forth and adaptedV to be manually operated selectively at diierent speeds.
With the above objects in view,` as well as others which will appear as the specification proceeds, the invention comprises the construction,` ar rangement and combination of parts as now to be fully described and as hereinafter to be'specically claimed, it being understood that the disclosure herein is merely illustrative and intended Fig. 2 is a side elevational View of the material handling apparatus or hoist as it would appear from the left in said Fig. 3;

Y With respect to the drawings and the numerals of reference thereon, a base for Vthe material handling apparatus is constituted as a right side frame IQ and a left side frame II. v i The right side frame Ill consists of -a body I2 including supports I3 for-said right side frame IS integral with said body I2.- The body I2 also 13 Claims. (Cl. 254-186) i integrally includes acylindrical bearing member I4 providingr an external bearing surface I5, and said body I2 integrally supports an upper bearing I6, above the elevation of the cylindrical bearing member I4, and a lower bearing Il, at the elevation of the lower portion of said cylindrical bearing member I 4. The upper bearing IS, the cylindrical bearing member I4 and the lower bearing Il are as disclosed in substantially vertical alinement, said lower bearing I1 is disposed somewhat inwardly of saidupperbearing I6, and said Cylindrical bearing member I 4 is disposed inwardly of both of the upper and lower bearings IG and Il. The upper bearing I6 provides an inl ternal bearing'surface i8 and the lower bearing Il provides an internal bearing surface IS. The external bearing surface I5 and the internal bearing surfaces I8 and I9 are all in parallel relation, and each of the upper bearing I6, the cylindricalbearing member I4 and the lower bearing Il is as shown disposed substantially horizontally. The cylindrical bearing member I4 with external bearing surface I5, the upper bearing IS with internal bearing surface I8 and the lower bearing I'l with internal bearing surface I9 all extend longitudinally of the material handling apparatus in the disclosure as made. Openings 20 in the supp'ortsI-li of the right-side frame I0 are for receiving means (not shown), such as bolts, for anchoring said right side frame I0 to a suitable supporting structurefcr the material handling apparatus.
The. left side' frame II consists of a body 2| including supports 22 for said left side frame II integral with said body 2I. `The body 2| also integrally includes a cylindrical bearing member 23 providing an'` external bearing surface 24. Said cylindrical bearing member 23 is in alined, spaced relation to the cylindrical bearing member I4, and the external bearing surfaces I5 and 24 are also alined in direction longitudinally of the material handling apparatus. Openings 25 in the supports 22 of the left side frame II are for receiving anchoring means (not shown) for said left side frameI I.
A drum of the material handling apparatus is constituted as aright drum entity 26 and a left drum entity 2l suitably secured to each other and .rotatably supported upon the cylindrical bearing members I4 and 23 of the right and left side frames Ill and II, respectively. I
The right drum entity 26 consists of a body shaped to `providean-annular member 28 at the inner side of said body disposed transversely of the drum,V a cylindrical bearing memberZS integral with and extending outwardly from said annular member 28 and an annular flange member 3G integral with and extending exteriorly from the outer end of said cylindrical bearing member 23. The annular flange 30 is as shown arranged at right angle relation to the cylindrical bearing member 29, and said cylindrical bear ing member 23 includes an internal bearing'v surface 3l.
The left drum entity 21 consists of a body shaped to provide an annular member 32 at the inner side of said body disposed transversely of the drum, a cylindrical bearing member 33 integral with and extending outwardly from said annular member 32 and an annular ange member 3d integral with and extending exteriorly from the outer end of said cylindrical bearing member 33. The annular flange member 34- is as shown arranged at right angle relation to the cylindrical bearing member 33, and said cylindrical bearing member 33 includes an internal bearing surface 35.
Actually, the right and left drum entities 25 and 2 are, or may be, substantially alike. To they provision of the finished drum, adjacent surfaces of the annular, transverse members 28 and 32 of said right and left drum entities 26 and .2l are placed in abutting relation, so that the cylindrical bearing members 29 and 33 are in alinement, andwelded, or otherwise secured, to each other. The relation of the right and left drum entities to each other inthe completed drum is very clearly disclosed in Fig. 4 of thedrawings.
The annular, transverse members 28 and 32 of the right and left drum entities 25 and 2l are shaped to provide a concavity 36 between said members 28 and 32 for receiving the end portion of a cable 3i for the drum, and an anchor for said cable 3l' is constituted as a fixing screw 38 threaded into said drum at the location where said right and left drum entities meet and adapted to be turned down into the concavity 35 against the drum cable 3l. The body l2 of the right side frame l0 integrally includes an annular member 33 disposed transversely of said right side frame I0, and the body 2i of. the left side fra-me l l likewise includes an annular member lili disposed transversely of said left side frame ll. More explicitly, the annular, transverse members 39 and ware integral with the inner ends of the cylindrical bearing members hi and 23, respectively. Said annular transverse members 33 and 43 are in spaced relation to each other, the annular, transverse members 23 and 32 are disposed between and in spaced relation to the annular, transversemembers 33 and 43, and the internal bearing surfaces 3l and 35 of the hoi-st drum are upon annular bushings :i3 carried by the external bearing surfaces i5 and 2d of the cylindrical bearing members I4 and 23, respectively, when said drum is in assembled relation to the right and left side frames f3 and Il.
Said right and left side frames I and Il are securely fastened to each other by spaced apart,
relatively long spacer and tie rods 4i, IH which extend from side to side of the material handling apparatus, through the bodies l2 and 2| of the right and left side frames, andreceive nuts 42 upon their threaded reduced outer end portions 43, as well as by a relatively short spacer and tie rod i4 which extends centrally through the Y annular, transverse members 39 and 40 and receives nuts E upon its threaded reducedV outer end portions d6. The construction and arrangement are such that the reduced outer end portions d3 provide annular shoulders at the opposite ends of the relatively long spacer and tie rods di, and the nuts 42 retain the right and left side frames up against said annular shoulders of said spacer and tie rods 4i. That is to say, the rods 4l cooperate with the nuts 42 to retain lower portions of the right and left side frames in xed relation to each other. The construction and arrangement are also such that the reduced outer end portions 46 provide annular shoulders at the opposite ends of the relatively short spacer and tie rod 4,4, and the nuts 45 retain the annular, transverse members 3Q and 40 of the right and left side frames up against said annular shoulders of the spacer and tie rod 44. Stated otherwise, the rod 44 cooperates with the nuts i to. retain intermediate portions of said right and left side frames in xed relation to each other. It will be seen that the side frames i3 and il are rigidly held to each other by what may be termed a three point bolting. As disclosed, the spacer and tie rods 4l, 4 l' are situated at lower, forward and rearward locations of the material handling apparatus, and the spacer and tis rod 44 is situated at much higher location, substantially equidistantly spaced from said spacer and tie rods fil, 4! and from the front and rear of the apparatus.
The spacer and tie rod 44 passes through an opening 47 arranged centrally in the annular, transverse members 28 and 32 of the drum entities 26 and 27, and annular spacers 48, 48, upon said spacer and tie rod 44 and between the annular, transverse members 28, 39 and 32, 49, respectively, retain the hoist drum at its intended or centered location longitudinally of the material handling apparatus. That is, the hoist drum is mounted upon the annular bushings 49, themselves mounted upon the cylindrical bearing members i4 and 23 of the right and left side frames IIJ and l, to be freely rotatable upon said right and left side frames, and said hoist drum is also held against the possibility of movement in direction longitudinally of the apparatus.
The lower bearing Il' integrally carried by the body I2 of the right Side frame I9 rotatably supports, as at 5B, a hollow stud shaft 5I, which hollow stud shaft in turn integrally supports a brake drum 52 in surrounding relation to the stud shaft and a pinion 53 at the outer side of and alined with said lower lbearing l1. The hollow stud shaft 5l and the pinion 53, constituting a continuation of said hollow stud shaft, include an angular socket 5d for removably receiving an angular tool 55 of a hand crank assembly 56 for operating` the material handling apparatus. As disclosed, the handle of the hand crank assembly 56 is adjustable as to length.
The upper bearing i6 integrally carried by the body l2 of said right side framev lil rotatably supports, as at 51, a'hollow shaft 58, which hollow shaft in turn integrally supports a large intermediate gear 58 at the outer end or side of the upper bearing i6 and a small intermediate gear Gil at the inner end or side of said upper bearing. The large intermediate gear 59 is in surrounding, perpendicular relation to the hollow shaft 58, and the small intermediate gear 60 is alined with said hollow shaft 58. Said hollow shaft. 53, the large intermediate gear 59 and the small intermediate gear 60 include an angular socket 6l for removably receiving said angular tool 55 of said hand crank assembly 56.
The pinion 53 meshes with the large intermediate gear 59, and said pinion and said large intermediate gear provide what maybe termed a rst speed reduction gearing arrangement of the material handling apparatus.
The annular iiange member 30, constituted as a part of the body of the right drum entity 26, integrally supports an internal gear 62 which is in surrounding relation to the small intermediate gear 60. Said small intermediate gear 60 meshes with the internal gear 62, and the small intermediate gear and said internal gear provide what may be termed a second speed reduction gearing arrangement of the material handling apparatus.
A brake band 63, with brake lining 64, upon the brake drum 52 has one of its end portions 65 anchored, as at 66, to the body I2 of the right side frame I0 and its other end portion, including a brake band holder 61, pivoted, as at 68, to an intermediate portion of a brake lever 69 situated at the outer side of and having a portion of its length engaged up against said body I2. Said brake band holder 61 passes freely through the body I2. The brake obviously can be applied by manual swinging of the brake lever 6-9 in direction away from the right side frame, and said brake will be released upon release of saidbrake f lever.
A toothed portion 10 upon the brake drum 52 is adapted to be engaged by a paw1,1| to preclude retrograde movement of said brake drum and the hollow stud shaft. The pawl 1I is rotatably mounted, as at 12, upon one of the spacer and tie rodsl 4I, beneath a nut `Il2, and the free end 13 of said pawl 1I is spring-pressed toward the toothed portion 'IIJ by a compression spring 14 upon a post 1.5 rigid with said pawl. The post 15 passes freely outwardly through the body I2 of the right side frame III, and the compression spring 14 has one of its ends engaged against the pawl and its other end engaged against an inner surface of said body I2. The end of said post 15 spaced from the pawl is pivoted, as at 16, to an intermediate portion of a hand lever 11 for operating said pawl. When the pawl 1I is engaged with the toothed portion 10, aside edge of the hand lever 11 is up against the outer surface of the body I2, or up against a washer between said outer surface of said body I2 and said hand lever. Said pawl can be renewed from said toothed portion by swinging the hand lever 11 outwardly, against resilient action of the compression spring 1-4. And the pawl can be held removed from the toothed portion, when this is intentional, in any suitable and convenient manner, as by upsetting the hand lever 11 so that its lower end, instead of its side edge, is engaged against the outer surface of the body I2, orY
against a washer upon said outer surface, as will be understood.
The hollow stud shaft 5I, integrally supporting the brake drum 52 and the pinion '53, may be fixed against the possibility of longitudinal movement in the lower bearing I1, integrally cars ried by the body I2 ofthe right side frame I6, in any suitable and convenient manner.
The hollow shaft 58, integrally supporting'the large intermediate gear 59 and the smallintermediate gear 66, includes spaced apart circumferential slotsdenoted 18 and 19, the circumferential slot 18 beingsituated in the end portion of said hollow shaft 58 adjacent said large intermediate gear 59 and the circumferential slot 19 being situatedin the end portion ofthe hollow shaft adjacent said small intermediate gear 66. The upper bearing I6, integrally carried by the body I2 of the right side frame III, includes an elongated slot 80, in the upper portion of said upper bearing I6 as disclosed, which is situated adjacent the outer or free end of the upper bearing and extends circumferentially of said upper bearing. Said .hollow shaft 58 is adapted to be adjusted longitudinally in the upper bearing i6. More explicitly, the hollow shaft 58 ls capable of adjustment in said upper bearing I6 to the position as in Fig. 4 of the drawings, where the small intermediate gear 66 is in mesh with the internal gear 62 and the circumferential slot 18 and the elongated slot 86 are alined, or to po` sition where said small intermediate gear 66 is clear of said internal gear 62 and the circumferential slot 19 and said elongated slot 86 are alined. A device for locking said hollow shaft 58 against the possibility of longitudinal movement in the upper bearing I6, either in the position as in Fig. 4, or in a position where the small intermediate gear and the internal gear 62 are disengaged and the circumferential slot 19 and the elongated slot 8U are alined, is constituted as a .retainer lever 8l adapted to lie in said elongated slot and to be selectively insertable into the circumferential slots 18 and 19. A tension spring 82, which encircles the upper bearing I6 and has its opposite ends connected, as at 83, to the retainer lever, is for urging said retainer lever into the elongated slot 89 and toward the hollow shaft 58. In Fig. 4, said retainer lever is in the slots 18 and 86, thus to preclude longitudinal movement of said hollow shaft 58. When it is desired to adjust the hollow shaft to position causing the small intermediate gear 68 to be clear of the internal gear 62, the retainer lever will be swung outwardly a distance to cause it to be removed from the circumferential slot 18, said hollow shaft will be slid outwardly in the upper bearing I6 until the slo-t 19 is alined with the slot 86, and the retainer lever will then be released. Said retainer lever will when released position itself in said slots 19 and 89, thus to preclude longitudinal movement of the hollow shaft 58. Clearly, the hollow shaft can be adjusted back to position where the small intermediate gear 68 and the internal gear 62 are interengaged by. withdrawing the retainer lever 8i from the slot .19,
sliding said hollow shaft inwardly until the slots 18 and 86 are alined and then releasing said retainer lever. i
r- The tool 55 of the hand crank assembly 56 will f be placed in the angular slot 54 when advantage tage is to be taken of but one of the speed reduction gearing arrangements of the material handling apparatus. Thatis, rthe drive of the hoist drum will be through the small intermediate gear 6(3and the internal gear 62` for high speed, low power operation of said hoist drum.
The hollow stud shaft 5I, and the brake drum 52 and the pinion 53 integral with said hollow stud shaft 5I, will rotate idly when rotative effort is applied at the angular sock 6I without adding to any' appreciable extent to the load.
The hoist drum evidently can be freely rotated so. that the cable 3'! can be paid oir quickly, as when said cable is to be attached to a load to be handled, while the internal gear 62 integral with said ho-ist drum is disengaged from the small intermediate gear 6d integral with the hollow shaft 58. Unloading, or letting a load down by gravity, obviously can be accomplished by appropriate employment of the brake, operative upon the hollow stud shaft i, while the pawl 'El is removed from the toothed portion lil.
What is claimed is:
l. Material handling apparatus comprising a base constituted as right and left side frames each consisting of a body providing a cylindrical bearing member, means securing said right and eft side frames in fixed relation to each other with said cylindrical bearing members in alinement, a hoist drum rotatably supported upon said cylindrical bearing members of the right and left side frames, a hollow stud shaft adapted to be rotated, a hollow shaft adapted to be rotated, spaced apart bearings upon one of said side frames for said hollow stud shaft and said hollow shaft, a brake drum and a pinion rigid with said hollow stud shaft, a brake band upon said brake drum, means for actuating said brake band, a large intermediate gear and a small intermediategear rigid with said hollow shaft, said pinion being adapted to'engage said large intermediate gear, and an internal gear rigid with said hoist drum adapted to be engaged by said small intermediate gear.
2. Material handling apparatus comprising a base constituted right and left side frames each consisting of a body providing a cylindrical bearing member, means securing said right and left side frames in iixed relation to each other with said cylindrical bearing members in alinement, a hoist drum rotatably supported upon said cylindrical bearing members of the right and left side frames, a hollow stud shaft adapted to be rotated, hollow shaft adapted to be rotated, spaced apart bearings upon one of said side frames for said hollow stud shaft and said hollow shaft, a brake drum and a pinion rigid with said hollow stud shaft, a brake band upon said brake drum, means for actuating said brake hand, a toothed portion rigid with said brake drum, a pawl upon one of said side frames adapted to be engaged with and disengaged from said toothed portion, a large intermediate gear and a small intermediate gear rigid with said hollow shaft, said pinion being adapted to engage said large intermediate gear, and an internal gear rigid With said hoist drum adapted to be engaged by said small intermediate gear.
E. Material handling apparatus comprising a base constituted as right and left side frames each consisting of a body providing a cylindrical bearing member, means securing said right and left side frames in xed relation to each other with said cylindrical bearing members in alinement, a hoist drum constituted as right and left drum entities each consisting of a body providing a member at the inner side of saidbody of the corresponding drum entity disposed transversely of said drum, a cylindrical bearing member integral with and extending outwardly from said transverse member and mounted upon a cylindrical bearing member of one of said sidel frames and an annular flange member integral with and extending transversely of and exteriorly from a portion of said cylindrical bearing member of the corresponding drum entity, said transverse members oi the right and left drum entitles being secured to each other and the cylindrical bearing members of said right and left drum entities being in alinement, and means for causing said hoist drum to be rotated.
4. Material handling apparatus comprising a base constituted as right and left side frames each consisting of a body providing a cylindrical bearing member, means securing said right and left side frames in fixed relation to each other with said cylindrical bearing members in alinement, a hoist drum constituted as right and left drum entities each consistingof a body providing an annular member at the inner side of said body of the corresponding drum entity disposed transversely of said drum, a cylindrical bearing member integral with and extending outwardly from said annular, transverse member and mounted upon a cylindrical bearing member of one of said side frames and an annular flange member integral with and extending transversely of and exteriorly from a portion of said cylindrical bearing member spaced from the annular, transverse member of the corresponding drum entity, said annular, transverse members of the right and left drum entities being secured to each other and the cylindrical bearing members of said right and left drum entities being in alinement, means centering said hoist drum upon the right and left side frames of said base, and means for causing said hoist drum to be rotated.
5. Material handling apparatus comprising a base constituted as right and left side frames each consisting of a body providing a cylindrical bearing member, means securing said right and left side frames in iixed relation to each other with said cylindrical bearing members in alinement, a hoist drum constituted as right yand left drum entities each consisting of a body providing an annular member at the inner side of said body disposed transversely of said drum, a cylindrical bearing member integral with and extending outwardly from said annular, transverse member and mounted upon a cylindrical bearing member of one of said side frames andan annular flange member integral with and extending transversely of and exteriorly from a portion of said cylindrical bearing member spaced from said annular, transverse member of the corresponding drum entity, said annular, transverse members of the right. and left drum entities being secured up against each other and being situated between the cylindrical bearing members of said right and left side frames, means centering said hoist drum upon the right and left side frames of Asaid base, and means for causing the hoist drum to be rotated.
6. Material handling apparatus comprising a base constituted as right and left side frames each consisting of a body providing a cylindrical bearing member, means securing said right and left side frames in fixed relation to each other with said cylindrical bearing members in alinement, a hoist drum constituted as right and left drum entities each consisting of a body providing an annular member at the inner side of said body disposed transversely of said drum, a cylindrical bearing member integral with and extending outwardly from said annular, transverse member and mounted upon a cylindrical bearing member of one of said side frames and an annular ilange member integral with and extending transversely of and exteriorly from a portion of said cylindrical bearing member spaced from said annular, transverse member oi the'corresponding drum entity, said annular transverse members of the 'right and left drum entities. being secured to each other and being situated between the cylindrical bearing members 'of said right and left side frames, a hollow pinion adapted to be rotated, means rotatably supporting said hollow pinion, a hollow shaft adapted to be rotated, a large intermediate gear `and a small intermediate gear rigid with said hollow shaft, said pinion being adapted to engage said large intermediate gear, andan internal gear rigid with one of the annular flange members of said hoist drum adapted to be engaged by said small intermediate gear.

Material handling apparatus comprising a base constituted as right and left side frames each consisting of a body providing a cylindrical bearing member, means securing said right and left side frames in fixed relation to each other with said cylindrical bearing members in alinement, a hoist drum constituted as right and left drum entities each consisting of a body providing an annular member at the inner side of said body disposed transversely of saiddrum, a cylindrical bearing member integral with and extending outwardly from said annular, transverse member and mounted upon a cylindrical bearing member of one of said side frames and an annular flange member integral with and extending transversely of and exteriorly from a portion of said cylindrical bearing member spaced from said annular, transverse member of theV corresponding drum entity, said annular, transverse members of the right and left drum entitles being secured up against each other and being situated between the cylindrical bearing members of said right and left side frames, means centering said hoist drum upon the right and left side frames of said base, a hollow stud shaft adapted to be rotated,'a hollow shaft adapted to be rotated, spaced apart bearings upon one of said side frames for said hollow stud shaft and said hollow shaft, a pinion rigid with said hollow studY shaft,` a large intermediate gear and a small intermediate gear rigidwith said hollow shaft,said pinion being adapted to engage said large intermediate gear, and an internal gear rigid with one of the annular flange members of said hoist drum adapted to be engaged by said small intermediate gear.
8. Material handling apparatus comprising a base constituted as right and left side frames each consisting of a body providing a cylindrical bearing member, means securing said right and left side frames in fixed relation to each other with said cylindrical bearing members in alinement, a hoist drum constituted as right and left drum entities each consisting of a body providing an annular member at the inner sidel of said body disposed transversely of said drum, a cylindrical bearing member integral with and extending outwardly from said annular, transverse member and mounted upon a cylindrical bearing member of one of said side frames and an annular flange member integral with and eX- tending transversely of and exteriorly from a portion of said cylindrical bearing member spaced from said annular, transverse member of the corresponding drum entity, said annular, transverse members of the right and left drum entities being secured up against each other and being situated between the cylindrical bearing members of said right and left side frames, a hollow stud shaft adapted to be rotated, a hollow shaft adapted to be rotated, spaced apart bearings upon one of said side frames for said hollow stud shaft and said hollow shaft, a brake 1mm and o pinion rigid with soia hollow stud shaft', a brake band upon said brake drum, means for actuating said brake band, a large intermediate" gear and a small intermediate gear rigid with said hollow shaft, said pinion being adapted to engage said large intermediate gear, and an internal gear rigid with said hoist drum' adapted to be engaged by said small intermediate gear.
9. Inmaterial handling apparatus, the combination with right and left side frames providing spaced apart, alined cylindrical bearing members, of a hoist drum including spaced apart, alined cylindrical bearing members rotatably supported upon and a transverse member between and in spaced relation to said'cylindrical bearing members of said right and left side frames, and means engaging said right and left side frames and said transverse member for retaining said hoist drum against longitudinal movement.
10. Material handling apparatus comprising a base constituted as right and left side frames each consisting of a body providing a cylindrical bearing member, means securing said right and left side frames in fixed relation to each other with said cylindrical bearing members in alinement, a hoist drum rotatably supported upon said cylindrical bearing members of the right` and left'side frames, a stud shaft adapted to be rotated, a shaft adapted to be rotated, spaced apart bearings upon one of said side frames for said stud shaft and said shaft, a brake drum and a pinion rigid with said stud shaft, a brake band upon said brake drum, means for actuating said brake band, a toothed portion rigid with said brake drum, a pawl upon one of said side' frames adapted to be' engaged with and disengaged from said-toothed portion, a large intermediate gear and a small intermediate gear rigidr with said shaft, said pinion being adapted to engage said large intermediate gear, and an internal gear rigid with said hoist drum adapted to be engaged by said small intermediate gear. i

Material handling apparatuscomprising a base constituted as right and left side frames' of one of said side frames and an annular flange member integral with an extending transversely of and exteriorly from a portion of said cylindrical bearing member spaced from said annular, transverse member of the corresponding drum entity, said annular, transverse members of the right and left drum entities being secured to each other and being situated between the cylindrical bearing members of said right and left side frames, a pinion adapted to be rotated, means rotatably supporting said pinion, a hollow shaft adapted to be rotated, a large intermediate gear and a small intermediate gear rigid With said hollow shaft, said pinion being adapted to engage said large intermediate gear, and an internal gear rigid with one of the annular flange members of said hoist drum adapted to be engaged by said small intermediate gear.
12. Material handling apparatus comprising a base constituted as right and left side frames each consisting of a body providing a cylindrical bearing member, means securing said right and left side frames in fixed relation to each other with said cylindrical bearing members in alinement, a hoist drum constituted as right and left drumentities each consisting of a body providing an annular member at the inner side of said body disposed transversely of said drum, a cylindrical bearing member integral with and extending outwardly from said annular, transverse member and mounted upon a cylindrical bearing member of one of said side frames and an annular flange member integral with and extending transversely of and exteriorly from a portion of said cylindrical bearing member spaced from said annular, transverse member of the corresponding drum entity, said annular, transverse members of the right and left drum entities being secured up against each other and being situatedbetween the cylindrical bearing members of the rightk and left side frames, means centering said hoist drum upon the right and left side frames of said base, a stud shaft adapted to be rotated, a shaft adapted to be rotated, spaced apart bearings upon one of said side frames for said stud shaft and said shaft, a pinion rigid with said stud shaft, a large intermediate gear and a small intermediate gear rigid with said shaft, said pinion being adapted to engage said large intermediate gear, and an internal gear rigid with one of the annular flange members of said hoist drum adapted to be engaged by said small' intermediate gear.

Material handling apparatus comprising a base constituted as right and left side frames consisting of a body providing a cylindrical bearing member, means securing said right and left side frames in xed relation to each other with said cylindrical bearing members in alinement, a hoist drum constituted as right and left drum entities each consisting of a body providing an annular member at the inner side of said body disposed transversely of said drum, a cylindrical bearing member integral with and extending outwardly from said annular, transverse member and mounted upon a cylindrical bearing member of one of said side frames and an annular flange member integral with and extending transversely of and exteriorly from a portion of said cylindrical bearing member spaced from said annular, transverse member of the corresponding drum entity, said annular, transverse members of the right and left drum entities being secured up against each other and being situated between the cylindrical bearing members of said right and left side frames, a stud shaft adapted to be rotated, a shaft adapted to be rotated, spaced apart bearings upon one of said side frames for said stud shaft and said shaft, a brake drum and a pinion rigid with said stud shaft, a brake band Iupon said brake drum, means for actuating said brake band, a large intermediate gear and a small intermediate gear rigid With said shaft, said pinion being adapted to engage said large intermediate gear, and an internal gear rigid with said hoist drum adapted to be engaged by said small intermediate gear.
