Description
M. LEE. Provision Safe.
No. 220,245. Patented Oct. 7,1879.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTHA LEE, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PROVlSlON-SAFES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,245, dated October 7, 1879; application filed September 3, 1879.
. provement in Provision-Safes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in
= which- Figure l is an end elevation of the safe suspended from the flooring-timbers of a collar. Fig. 2 is a similar view in cross-section.
The safe consists of a rectangular box, A, covered with wire-cloth a a on the two oppo site sides, so as to allow a free passage of air through the same, as indicated by the arrows. This safe is suspended by hangers to the flooring-timbers or joists of a cellar and the object is to locate the safe between two windows, so that the air will have a direct current through. V
The invention consists in combining with such a safe pivoted hangers attached on the opposite ends of the box, and so arranged as to be spread or contracted to meet the varying widths apart of the flooring-timbers, and also to raise or lower the safe, as necessity may require.
B B are the hangers, of which two are used at each end of the box, the bottoms being pivoted at b b, which leaves the tops free to be spread apart or drawn together at pleasure.
The tops project some distance above the box, and are preferably notched, as shown at c c, to fit the flooring-timbers properly, to which they are nailed or screwed.
The flooring-timbers in cellars are at vary ing distances apart, and this arrangement of the pivoted hangers is adapted to such varying distances, and enables the safe to be sus pended directly between two Windows, so as to get the best effect of the currents of air. It also enables the safe to be hung high or low. The safe may be hung either crosswise or lengthwise of the flooring-timbers at pleasure.
There are doors on one or both sides of the safe. By suspending as above described, vermin, animals, and insects are kept from the safe.
What I claim as new is- The combination with, the safe A, provided with the screen-sides a a, of the hangers'B B, arranged in pairs at the opposite ends of the safe, and pivoted thereto, and capable of be ing opened or closed to meet the varying widths apart of the flooring-timbers, as herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in-the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
