FIG.2
FIG.7
Patented May 21, 1940 UNTED STATES BINDER FOR LOOSE LEAVES Nelson S. Welk, Athens, Ohio, assignor to The McBee Company, Athens, Ohio, a corporation f Ohio Application October 12,
1 Claim.
My invention is an improvement on United States Letters Patent No. 1,374,594 issued April l2, 1921. As shown in that patent, the binder comprises two longitudinally divided sections hav- 5 ing at abutting axial faces provided with interengaging teeth for holding the post sections together, each section having its inner end formed with a V-terminal and its outer end with a thin headed terminal overhanging the companion section, said post being of uniform diameter throughout the interengagement of said post sections.
It has been found in practice that there is a tendency for the pin sections to tip or move laterally during the operation of driving them in the holes formed in the leaves. This is especially true of the shorter pins. This results in the pins tearing the leaves, thus producing an insecure binding.
My invention has for its object to provide means which will prevent any lateral or tipping movement on the part of the sections during the driving operation, as well as when they are in their permanent position. y
My means of accomplishing the foregoing objects may be more fully comprehended by having reference to the accompanying drawing, which is hereunto annexed and is a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. 1 shows a partial side elevation partly in section, of a loose leaf book having loose leaves between a top and bottom cover, the whole being held in assembled unity by my improved invention.
Figs. 2 and 3 show the side and front elevation of the male half of my improved binder, respectively.
Figs. 4 and 5 show the front and side elevation of the female half of my improved binder, re- 40 spectively.
Fig. 6 is a horizontal cross section taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. '1 is a horizontal cross section taken on 4.5 line 7 1 of Fig. 5, looking in the direction of the arrows.
193s, serial No. 234,515
Fig. 8 is a horizontal cross section taken on line 8 8 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows,
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts' throughout the entire specication.
Inthe drawing, a volumel of loose leaves is shown bound by my improved binder which comprises two mating sections 2 and 3 which are substantially semicircular as shown in Figs. 6, 'l and 8. The at sides 4 and 5 of the sections 2 and 3 are formed with a plurality of interengaging teeth formed with inclined sides which slant inwardly and toward the head. In the center of the iiat side 4 of section 3, I form a rib or key 6 which extends longitudinally thereof, and which is fitted to and slidable in a groove 1 cut or formed in the flat side 510i section 2. The result of this construction will be clear to persons skilled in the art. When the selection of leaves to be bound has been made, a number of holes 20' are drilled or punched therein adjacent the edge.A Sections 2 and 3 are then placed in position. One section is started in the hole from the bottom of the Volume to be bound, and the otherfvfrom the top; this will bring the key 6 and groove 'l in register and they will prevent any tipping or lateral movement of the sections when they are being driven into the holes to tightly bind the leaves into a permanent volume.
Having described my invention, what I regard as new and desire to secure'by Letters Patent is:
In a paper binder, a binder for loose leaves comprising two mating sections substantially semicircular in cross-section, the at portions of which are provided with interlocking teeth which permit free longitudinal movement in one direction but none in the opposite, each section being provided with a head which extends in the path of the other section, a key on the toothedportion of one of said sections which extends longitudinally thereof, there being a registering groove in the toothed portion of the other of said se'ctions in which said key is slidable.
