My present invention relates to signs, and more particularly to advertising signs for automobile doors. l

'I'he principal object of my invention is an advertising sign for automobile doors land the like;

Another object is an advertising sign for doors of vehicles which is self adjusting in its clamping means between the edges of such doors;

Still another object isa clamping means for signs adapted to 't automobile doors which is not only self adjusting but which is held in adjustment in a resilient manner;

And still another object is a sign of the above character which is easily attached or detached l5 without the ald of tools, and

Other objects and novel features comprising the construction and operation of my device will be apparent as the description of the same progresses. n s go In the drawing illustrating the preferredv embodiment of my invention.

Referring more in detail. to the drawing, it is to be understood that the scale and proportions have been greatly/,exaggerated in certain places n in order to make the apparatus and its functions clear. The material used is preferably sheet metal in the body of the sign and therefore dlillcult to illustrate in its actual proportions. i

III indicates the upper portion of an automo- 5 bile door having the usual side edges I I and I2. The front of the sign is composed of a fiat sheet metal member I3 the long horizontal edges of which are folded over at I4 and I5 to form hori' zontal channels Ila and lia. These channels Ila 60 and 15a provide a slide-way at one end in which is adjustably engaged a slide member I6 which is cut away on one side to provide a clearance for the door hinge I1. In some cases where the hinge I1 is high or low such that the extensions I8 of. 55 the slide interfere, the extension on the top or s claim. v(o1. iii-120)' bottom as the case may be. may be positioned nearer the center of the slide. These extension l' portionsl I8 are curved at their ends to form hooks for the purpose of engaging around the edges II of the door I0. Felt strip v'Il is glued or other- 5 wise attached to the inner face of the extension hooks I8 to prevent the door edges from being marred.

On the other end of the body I3 of the sign are similar hook extension members which 10 are adapted to engage over the opposite door edge I2. In a like manner the hooks 20 are protected by felt strips to prevent marring of the door finish. Along the back surface of the channel members I4 and I6 are also felt strips IIb and 16 lib. On the same end of the body I3 of the sign Il have provided a cut-away recess 22 to provide clearance for the door handle 23; lock, etc'.

On the back side of the slide I8 and the body I3 I have provided brackets 2l and 28 the open 20 ends of which are oppositely disposed to `each other. A heavy rubber band 21 is provided hav.- ing a pin v26a. passing through one end of the band and engaging with its extended ends against brackets 28. The other end of the band 21 is 25 similarly provided with a pin a which is adapted to engageagainst the brackets l2li. 1

In Fig. 6, I have shown a slightly modified form of slide bracket in which bracket members 25d are punched up from the body I6 through which 30 anchor means are inserted in suitable openings, said anchor means being pins similar to 25a.

On the top edge of the body portion I3, I have provided a hanger strap 30 which is bent to form a hook and engages over the window sill 3| 35 of the door I Il, the end of which may extend down between the sill and the glass 32 of the door. The under side of this strap is also felted, as

shown at to prevent damage tothe door h.

In operation, the hook l0 islshaped to e 40 window sill and the hooks I8 are engaged over the door edge II. The body I3 is drawn away from the slide I6 until the hooks 20 are engaged over the door edge I2. As the slide recedes from k the body I3 a tension is vplaced on the rubber 45 band 21 clamping the sign firmly to the door in a strong resilient manner. The pins 25a and 26a cannot slip out of place while the tension on the 'band is present but when the sign is removed they can easily be removed and a new band inserted in a matter of seconds thereby making it possible to .renew the band easily at any time.

It will be quite apparent that the heavy tension on the rubber band will at all times hold the sign I claim as new is:

firmly in place and at the same time prevent rattling as all contacting parts on the door are felted. -v

It should also be understood that I do not necessarily limit myself to the use of a rubber band as a tension springin its place would be the full equivalent therefor.

In the mounting of the brackets and rubber band members to the slide and sign body, it is preferable that the point of attaching of the brackets 26 to the body I3 be located at a position adjacent one side of the vertical center of the sign body corresponding to the end of the sign body which carries the slide member I 6; The reason for this is to prevent any tendency t0` bow out the sign body due to considerable tension in the rubber band as would be the caseif these brackets were to be mounted adjacent the further end of the sign body. In positioning these brackets as above described, the sign body I3 always hugs the door surface snugly.

Having thus ldisclosed my invention, what I l. Anl advertising sign for automobile doors, comprising a sign body -having a recess at one end adapted to pass around a door handle and lock and extension hooks adapted t0 engage over the adjacent edge of said door, folded over horizontal top and bottom edges on said body forming slide-ways thereon, a slide member adapted to slide in the opposite end of said body, said slide member being recessed on one side and having extension hook portions thereon adapted toengage over the opposite door edge, bracketsl attached to the back side of said slide and said body portion, pins located across said brackets,

a tension member anchored to said pins, said' hooks, and slide-way members being faced on the purpose of engaging over the opposite edge of said door, saddles attached to said body and said slide, pins located in said saddles. a rubber band engaged around said pins in the central portions of said saddles for the purpose of providing a resilient tension between the said slide and sai Abody member.

In a removable sign for automobile doors, the said sign comprising a body portion having hooks on one end to engage over one edge of said door and horizontally disposed top and-bottom slideways. and a slide member slidably .engaged in said slideways, one end of said slide having hooks to'v engage over'the opposite edge 0f said door, a contracting.v means connecting said slide with said bodyy member comprising pinf retaining brackets located on said body, portion and slide member, a rubber band surrounding two pin members adjacentv their central portions, the

ends of one pin being anchored to the bracket on said bod'yportion and the ends 0f the other pin being anchored to the bracket on said slide 35 member.
