ATTORNEYS Patented Apr. 30, 1940 I UNITED STATES BUILDERS TRESTIE I Arnold W. Thielepape, Austin, Tex.
Application June 20, 1939, Serial No. 280,199
1 Claim.
This invention relates to builders trestles or horses, and its general object is to provide a collapsible trestle including legged supporting mem-.
bers capable of detachable association with cross 5 beams of any appropriate length and of various widths, in a manner to set up a clamping and rigid bracing action therewith to prevent endwise movement or any possibility of the beam becoming loose, yet the supporting members can be easily and expeditiously applied. and removed with respect to the beam, and are capable of being folded, when removed, in compact form to facilitate handling, shipping and storing of the trestle. f
A further object is to provide a trestle 'of the character set forth, that is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and extremely eificient in operation, use and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the trestle which forms the subject matter of the present invention. I t
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the cross beam, with one of the supporting members in elevation.
Figure 3 is ajragmentary side view.
Figure 4 is airagmentaryperspective view, with the cross beam in dotted lines to illustrate the association of the seat members with respect thereto.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference numeral I indicates the cross beam or timber of my trestle and it will be noted that the supporting members therefor each include a pair of legs 2 formed from angle iron. The inner angle flanges or portions of the legs are cut away at the upper ends thereof to provide shoulders for receiving horizontally disposed companion angle iron members 3 for the beam I and which are welded or otherwise secured adjacent to their inner ends to the legs for' cooperation with each other to provide a seat for receiving the beam therein, as best .shown inFigure l.
The legs of each supporting member extend in diverging relation to each other from the seat 5 members 3 and at an outward angletherefrom In describing the invention in detail, reference when the parts are assembled, for the disposal of the pairs of legs in divergingrelation to each other, therefore it will'be seen that the seat meme bers set up a clamping and-binding engagement against the beam, as will be apparent upon inspection of Figures 1 and 2. i r
Welded or otherwise secured at their ends to the vertical flanges of the seat members and the outer flanges of the legs of each supporting memher are angularly disposed bracing strips 4, and bridging the legs adjacent to the lower ends thereof are transversely disposed bracing strips 5 having their ends pivotally connected to the inner flanges of thelegs to'allow movement of the latter, and consequently'movement of the companion seat members relative to each other so that the seat members are adjustable for receiving cross beams of Various widths. The pivotal connection of the bracing strips 5' with the legs likewise allows the supporting members to be folded, to facilitate handling, shipping and storing thereof, as will be apparent. The horizontal flanges of the seat members are each provided with a pair of openings for disposal in registration with bores extending transversely through the beam to receive the bolts of bolt and nut connections 6 for. securing the beams in the seat members, andthe nuts are preferably of the wing type for application and removal of the supporting members with respect to the beam without the use of tools.
' The lower ends of the inner flanges of the legs 2' preferably terminate short of the lower ends thereof and. the extending end portions of the outer flanges are bent inwardly in curved formation to provide feet 1, thereby eliminating sharp edges as well as facilitatingsliding the trestle on a floor surface or the like without damage thereto.
It is thought from'the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood'that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, iprovided that such changes fall within the scope 'of the appended claim.
What I claim is: Y
A builders trestle comprising a cross beam, supporting members for the beam and each including a'pair of separate angle iron companion members providing seats for receiving the beam therein, pivotally connectedangle iron legs having certain of the flanges thereof cut away to provide shoulders for receiving the companion members thereon and secured to the latter for disposal at an inclined angle thereto for urging the companion members in clamping and binding engagement with the beam, bracing means for the legs and companion members and secured thereto for disposal between the same, said beam having bores extending transversely therethrough, said companion members having openings therein for registration with the bores, and bolt and nut connections having the bolts extending through the registering openings and bores for detachably securing the companion members to the beam.
