(01. 221-494) The invention relates to devices arranged for dispensing small quantities of substances and of the type frequently provided in public places and the like for dispensing soaps, oils and other liquids or fluids orsolids.
An object of the invention is to provide a dispenser of the character described which is particularly designed for use in public places and provides a very attractive device and an attractive display of the material to be dispensed, which in accordance with the present invention, is contained in standard size bottles or packages as marketed by the manufacturer of the material.
Another object of the invention is to provide a dispenser of the character described which will be simple and compact in form and will have incorporated in the operating mechanism thereof ,a coin operative mechanism, the entiredevice being constructed of a minimum number of sim- 0 ple and ruggedlyl constructed operating parts which willgive positive and continuous service for a long substantially indefinite period of time.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described, which. may
be quickly and readily opened by the attendant for replacing a bottle or other container of sub stances to be dispensed and for the removal of the coins deposited by users in the operating of the dispenser.
30 Still another object of the invention is to provide a dispenser of the character described which may be readily adapted for use with various shapes and sizes of material containers to be used with the dispenser.

above referred to, is substantially completely carupon insertion of a coin to enable dispensing off fluid from the bottle by operation of the arm 39.
The dispensing unit 38 here used, comprises a casing 44 provided at the top thereof with a seat or socket 49 for the open neck end 4! of the bottle 35 and is provided belowthe seat with a dispenser pump cylinder 49, communicated with the socket by a passage 48. Reciprocally mounted in the cylinder 49 is a plunger 5| which on movement into the cylinder is adapted to discharge fiuidcontainedtherein'from a discharge port 52 provided in the bottom of the casing 44. As will be seen from Figure 4, the pump or dispenser unit 38 is mounted forwardly of the back plate I! by means of a bracket 53 and is positioned with thedischarge port 52 above an opening 54 in the bottom wall I 2 of the casing, the wall l2 being preferably provided with a depending wall portion 59 surrounding the opening 54 to prevent access to the dispenser mechanism. An air inlet tube 51 is supported in the seat 46 and is communicated with the atmosphere at its lower end by an air inlet opening 58 and is extended to substantially the top of the inverted bottle 35 to allow entry of air into the bottle to replace the fluid discharged. The bottle is supported in inverted position with the open neck end thereof securely held in the seat 49 and with the lower end of the neck compressed against a gasket 59 in the seat, by means of a bracket 6| secured to the upper end of the plate I! and clamped against the end'BZ of the bottle by means of a set-screw 63.
As an important feature of the dispenser unit I provide opposite the discharge port 52 a pivoted closure 64 therefor which. is rotatable on a stem 66 to and from a position against and closing off the discharge opening. Actuation of this closure member is designed to be automatically effected in the operation of the dispenser and to this end the stem 66 is preferably connected to the manually movable member 39, such as by means of a gear 61 on the stem and a rack 68 on the arm 39 as here shown, so that on movement of the arm 39 to discharge liquid, the closure will be automatically withdrawn from the discharge port and on release of the arm 39 following such discharge the closure will be automatically withdrawn from the discharge port and on release of the arm 39 following such discharge the closure will be automatically returned to a position sealing off the discharge port. Also preferably the closure'is provided with a projection H which is-extendable into the discharge passage 52 and to prevent any drying or caking of the liquid in or about this discharge passage as might interfere with the proper operation of the device.
As previously stated, connection of the operating arm 39 with the pump plunger 5| is effected through a coin controlled mechanism 43 which,
is effective to normally maintain these parts disconnected and to provide an operative connection therebetween only on insertion of a proper coin. The mechanism here consists of a stationspring 88 ary mounting plate 13 arranged forwardly of the back plate I! and within which is slidably mounted a box-:like carriage 14 having opposed vertical sides 16 and TI slidably engaged with the stationary plates I1 and I3. Carried by a'shaft l5 journalled in the plates H and 13 at a point below the carriage 14, is a lever 18 which extends up through the carriage between the sides 16 and l! thereof and is normally freely movable with respect thereto. The carriage is, in the present construction, connected to theplunger 5| of the dispenser while the lever 18 is connected to the operating arm 39 so that normal reciprocation of the arm 39 will only cause a free reciprocation of the lever 18 within the carriage 14 and no movement of the plunger will be effected. The operative connection between the coin 19 which may be inserted through a coin slot 8| in the top wall of the casing and is arranged to fall with the opposite peripheral portions thereof into opposed recesses 82 formed in the inner surfaces of the carriage sides wand 11 and is normally supported in the recesses on a shoulder 83 on the lever 18. Thus'the inserted coin lies directly across the interior of the carriage 14 and blocks the movement of the lever 18 therethrough and consequently causes a transverse movement of the carriage under the urge of the lever 18 when the latter is operated by the arm 39. At the end of the movement, however, determined by the engagement of a stop 84 on the lever 18 with a pin89 carried by the plates I1 and 13, the shoulder 83 is rotated to an inclined position such as to release the coinfrom between the carriage and'the lever for deposit in'the coin box 8'! positioned inthe casing. On release of the arm 39 the lever 18 is returned to a starting position by means of a connected thereto while the carriage is similarly returned to the starting position by the resilient expansion of the pump plunger 5|.
Connection of the carriage with the plunger is effected by means of a lever 89 pivoted to a shaft 9| carried on the mounting plate 13 and which is pivotally and slidably secured at its lower end 93 to the plunger and similarly connected at its upper end 94 to atransverse pin 96 secured to the carriage wall 11 and extended through a slot 91 in the mounting plate 13. The operative'connection between the arm 39 and the lever i9 here consists of a lever 98 which'is pivoted intermediate its ends to the shaft 9| and is arranged at its lower end 99 to abut the inner'end I9! of the arm 39 and is connected at its upper end Hi2 by means of aslip joint I93 to an arm I94 secured to the shaft 15 of the lever 18. Thus on insertion of a coin to. establish an operative connection between the lever 18 and the carriage 14, an inward movement of the arm 39will cause a clockwise rotation of the lever 98, as viewed in Figure 2, which will in turn, cause a counterclockwise rotation of the lever 18 and an advancement of the carriage and upper end of the lever 89 from right to left, as viewed in said figure, with a corresponding movement of the plunger from the left to right and into the pump cylinder of the dispenser,
As an important feature of the present dispenser I embody in the dispenser bottles or other containers for the miaterials to be dispensed which are of a standardsize and shape as marketed by the manufacturer of the product being dispensed and so arranged the container in the apparatus as to permita full and attractive display of one side of the container. This is effected by the use of anopening or window H16 in the front Wall 1 of the casing directly, opposite the bottle 35 and the forward positioning of the bottlewithin the casing so as to dispose one side I01 of the bottlein the opening and against the forward side i of the casing. In accordance with the present arrangement of the device, the opening is of suflicient size toexpose the entire side ID! of the bottle or at least, the Whole or a substantial part of a label H18 provided on the side I01 of the bottle.

Thus I may use a standard and identical casing for dispensers using bottles of l various sizes and shapes by providing a different frame member for each size and shape of the [bottle tobe used, each of the different frames having a standard peripheral size for securing to the casing, as above mentioned.

A liquid dispenser of the character described comprising, casing provided with an opening in anexposedlwall thereof, ajbottle mounted in dispensed and positioned with a side thereof in said opening, manually controlled dispensing, means connected to said the contents thereof to the exterior of the casfl bottle for discharging ing, said casing being providedwith a seat sursaid casing" andadapted to contain liquid to be rounding said opening at the outer side of said i casing, and a frame mounted in said seat for engagement with said bottle and extending into flush relation with the outer surface of said cas- 9. Aliquid dispenser of the character described comprising, a. casing, a liquid container mounted in said casing, dispensing means supported by provided with areciprocally movable dispensing valve and a dischargeport, manually displaceable ,means connected to said valve, and closure means for said port and mounted for movement to and from a position closing said port, and being connected to andmovable by said manually displaceable means for automatically opening said port upon actuation of said means in one direction and to close saidport upon actuation of said means in areciprocal direction.
