g `'Il'leprncipal object `of `this invention is `tol` provide a boxof this character which can be packed and shipped to the userlin a flat, knockeddown `.condition and which can be quickly and l easily `erectedby `the salesmenor packers atythe gtimeof packing the box. i
Other objects of the invention are, to provide i a" box which can be quickly and easily assembled and which" when assembled will `rigidly and sefcurelymaintain al1 of itsparts in position without wf theuse of glue, staples, cement, `or other fastening devices; and to provide a box in which the lid willbe hinged to the box "so that` it maybe lifted i towexpose `the contents and which when closed `will be` firmly held in place. A
Other Aobjects and advantages reside in the de-,i tail construction of the invention,`which is de` `signed for .simplicity, economy,` `and leffciency.
These `will `become more apparent from the fol- V lowing description.
linvention reference` is Vhad to the accompanying `In the` following detailed description of the drawing Whichforms a parthereof. Like-numerals refer to like partsin all views of the drawing and throughout the, descriptioni. In the drawing: l i Eig. 1 is a plan viewof the bottom memberof `theimprwedbox.` i i t Fig. `2 `is a plan viewof `the lid thereof.
Fig. s illustrates the sido band ofthe box.
i 4` is a` perspective view ofthe .complete` assembled` box.
lig.` 5 is a detail section along the box edge illustrating the relation between the top, bottom` n and side thereon i t Whilenot limited tothe exact shape or design shown, the new construction is particularly ap- 5 fplicable to a heart-shaped box as illustrated.` 4 The complete" box consists 3of` three pieces, a bottom i Il), a lid II, and a side band I2.
The` bottom is formedwith a peripheral series l of elongated slots I3 andwith a terminal V-shaped` ".slot lll.`
`The topis provided a series of `similar slots `I5 and I5' positioned intermediatefthe positions of theslots I3` inthe bottom. The slots I5' are placed in alignment with each other. The side band is formed along its bottom edge `with a series of hooked tongues I5, the hooks "of adjacent tongues facing. in opposite directions, l and with a terminal hooked tongue VI6 at each `use for packing extremity of theband.` The upper edge of the band I2 is provided `with a series of rectangular top tongues I'I andsimilar end tongues I9, the latter being placed near the extremities of the y band. The band is creased intermediate its` ex- 5 tremities asshown atxIS to provide a middle fold point. i l, `In assembling the box one terminal tongue IB is hooked into the v-shaped slot I4, the band is then distorted to allow the next hooked shaped `10 tongue I5 to be placed inthe next elongated perforation I3, the band is now allowed to resume its normal curve around the periphery of the bottom which acts to lock the hook of the next tongue into its place. 15
This procedure continuedcompletely around the bottom, each time before inserting the band i it is straightened to increase its length, the tongues to remove the band I2 without destroying the box.
This is dueto the fact that the final curved shape `of the band acts" to pull the `locking tongues under the end edges of the slots to prevent them from unhooking.
Afterthebox is packed,` the lid II is placed over thetoptongues I'I and I9, the latter enter- `ing the slots I5', and pusheddownwardly on the b ox. These tongues are naturally curved due i to the curve of the .side and the slots are straight.
Thiscurving action of the tongues acts to lock the 'lid in place so that it requires considerable l pull to remove it from thetongues.
If the lid be lifted at the pointed extremity, it will pull from the side tongues I'I and hinge on the twoaligned end `tongues I9 so that the lid may be lifted without completely removing `it and when released will snap `back upon the box due to the Ainherent elasticityofthe two tongues I9.
"The, inventionis particularly applicable to boxes,
` the outline of which is curved for in a straight box it would `be difoult to insert` two oppositely facing, hooked` tongues without destroying the hooks thereof.` -In curved outline boxes, howi ever, the side may be straightened to allow the tongues to pass through the slots and then released to curve and pull the tongues into the locking position; i
While` a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated4 herein, it is desired to be understood that the same may be Varied, within the scope of the appendedl claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
