Description

J. YOUNG.
n a h d n a h S u T B y 1 h No. 219,792. Patented Sept. 16, 1879.
mm. PHOWLITHOGRAPHER. WASHING UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JOHN YOUNG, OF TIFFIN, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLY-BRUSH AND FAN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent-N0. 219,792, dated September 16, 1879 application filed June 7, 1879.
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN YOUNG, of the city of Tiffin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fly- Brushes or Invalids Fans, of which I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is an elevated view, showing the parts. Fig. 3 is a view of the top of the post S and upright shaft T, showing the turned groove or bearing N and the elongated groove 0. v
The object and purpose of my invention are to construct, first, animproved attachment to automatic fly-brushes or fans, for the purpose of extension or contraction of the upright post R second, to so construct and attach the cross-head V that four horizontal fanshafts, W, can be. used, as shown in Fig. 1 of drawings, and that said cross-head will retain said fan-shafts W and pinion or gear wheels L in position and form sufficient bearin gs or journals therefor, so that said machine can be run or worked as eifectively in an in verted position, while suspended over a sickbed as a fan for invalids, as in its upright position; third, to so construct the extension-fan or fly-brush sleeve or holder J that the flybrush E can be'removed, and any common fan inserted in the sockets M, so that it can be used as a fan for invalids.
I will now proceed to describe its construction.
The invention consists in the arrangement of the upright postin two sections, R and S, section S working inside of section B in the manner of a telescope. There is a small pin, X, screwed in section S of said post, which works when said post is being extended or contracted in the elongated slot D in section B of said post, said post being capable of extension or contraction by means of another elongated slot, 0, in top edge of section It and the screw-clamp B and thumb-screw A, so that by loosening the thumb-screw Ain the screw-clamp B it allows section B of said post to expand, and thus allow section S to pass loosely and smoothly up and down, and thereby avoid marring and bruising the inside section of said post by means of a set-screw, which is used in others. About half an inch from the top of section S of said post is attached the large face gear-wheel G, and on the end of said section S is a turned groove or bearing, N, as shown in Fig. 3 of drawings; also, passing through the center of said post R is an upright shaft, T, caused to revolve by means of clockwork in the base of said machine. On the top end of said upright shaft T is attached the cross-head V by means of two set-screws, Q and P, the set-screw Q passing through the lower part of the hub of said cross-head V into the turned groove or hearing N, thus performing the office of keeping said cross-head in position when said machine is placed in an inverted position. The other set-screw,P,passes through the top part of the hub of said cross-head into the elongated slot 0 in the upright shaft T, so that when said shaft is caused to revolve said cross-head will revolve therewith, thus giving the fly-brushes their motions-first, round the upright shaft T; second, around the horizon tal fan -shafts W, which pass through the cross-head, said cross-head forming sufiicient journals for said shafts, and having secured thereon, by means of set-screws U, the adj ustable extension-fan sleeve J. The uprightpostR rests upon and is fastened in the circular bottom K, which contains the clock-work for giving the upright shaft its revolving motion.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The screw-clamp B, with the thumb-screw A, in combination with the post R, provided with elongated slots 0 and D and pin X, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
2. The section S of the upright post, pro vided with the turned groove or hearing N, and the upright shaft T, provided with the elongated groove 0, in combination with the setscrews Q and P and cross-head V, substantially as and for the purposeset forth.
3. The combination of theupright post, consisting of section It, provided with the verti- In witness that I claim the above I herecal slots C and I), and of the section S, prounto set my hand this 5th day of June, A. D. vidcd with the turned groove or bearing N, 1879.
the screw-clamp B, thumb-screw A, face gearwheel G, small pinion-wheels L, fan-shafts \V, JOHN YOUNG.
adjustable fan-sleeve J, fitn-support M, up-
right shaft T, providod with groove 0, cross- In presence of--- head V, and set-screws l and Q, substantially F. L. EMICII, as described, and for the purposes set forth. FRANK FLOOM.
