IMPROVEMENT IN FLY-BRUSH AND FAN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent-N0. 219,792, dated September 16, 1879 application filed June 7, 1879.
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN YOUNG, of the city of Tiffin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fly- Brushes or Invalids Fans, of which I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

The object and purpose of my invention are to construct, first, animproved attachment to automatic fly-brushes or fans, for the purpose of extension or contraction of the upright post R second, to so construct and attach the cross-head V that four horizontal fanshafts, W, can be. used, as shown in Fig. 1 of drawings, and that said cross-head will retain said fan-shafts W and pinion or gear wheels L in position and form sufficient bearin gs or journals therefor, so that said machine can be run or worked as eifectively in an in verted position, while suspended over a sickbed as a fan for invalids, as in its upright position; third, to so construct the extension-fan or fly-brush sleeve or holder J that the flybrush E can be'removed, and any common fan inserted in the sockets M, so that it can be used as a fan for invalids.
I will now proceed to describe its construction.
The invention consists in the arrangement of the upright postin two sections, R and S, section S working inside of section B in the manner of a telescope. There is a small pin, X, screwed in section S of said post, which works when said post is being extended or contracted in the elongated slot D in section B of said post, said post being capable of extension or contraction by means of another elongated slot, 0, in top edge of section It and the screw-clamp B and thumb-screw A, so that by loosening the thumb-screw Ain the screw-clamp B it allows section B of said post to expand, and thus allow section S to pass loosely and smoothly up and down, and thereby avoid marring and bruising the inside section of said post by means of a set-screw, which is used in others. About half an inch from the top of section S of said post is attached the large face gear-wheel G, and on the end of said section S is a turned groove or bearing, N, as shown in Fig. 3 of drawings; also, passing through the center of said post R is an upright shaft, T, caused to revolve by means of clockwork in the base of said machine. On the top end of said upright shaft T is attached the cross-head V by means of two set-screws, Q and P, the set-screw Q passing through the lower part of the hub of said cross-head V into the turned groove or hearing N, thus performing the office of keeping said cross-head in position when said machine is placed in an inverted position. The other set-screw,P,passes through the top part of the hub of said cross-head into the elongated slot 0 in the upright shaft T, so that when said shaft is caused to revolve said cross-head will revolve therewith, thus giving the fly-brushes their motions-first, round the upright shaft T; second, around the horizon tal fan -shafts W, which pass through the cross-head, said cross-head forming sufiicient journals for said shafts, and having secured thereon, by means of set-screws U, the adj ustable extension-fan sleeve J. The uprightpostR rests upon and is fastened in the circular bottom K, which contains the clock-work for giving the upright shaft its revolving motion.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The screw-clamp B, with the thumb-screw A, in combination with the post R, provided with elongated slots 0 and D and pin X, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
2. The section S of the upright post, pro vided with the turned groove or hearing N, and the upright shaft T, provided with the elongated groove 0, in combination with the setscrews Q and P and cross-head V, substantially as and for the purposeset forth.
