iMPROVEMENT IN ANlMAL- -POKES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,654, dated September.16, 187 9 application filed July 22, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER E. RUDEL,of Grand Itapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Animal-Pokes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompaor yoke to the stale, the construction of which said lock or fastening will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, A represents the yoke or how, the ends of "which are provided with holes a, from which slots 1) project in an upward direction toward the bend of the bow.

B represents a plate, secured upon the front side of the stale, and provided on one side with a laterally-projecting pin or pivot, O, fitting in the hole or bearing a on either side of the yoke, and provided at the end with a stud, 0, adapted to pass through the slot 1),

i but which will, when the yoke is turned to the position shown in Fig. 1, prevent the withdrawal of the yoke from the pivot.

In the plate 13 is formed a bearing for a pivot or key, D, constructed like the pivot or key 0 c, and adapted to engage the bearinghole at the opposite end of the yoke. l

The key D is retained in its hearing by a stud, cl, formed upon its shank or shaft, and working in a slot, 0, in plate 13, which permits it to'make about one-fourth of a revolution.

E is a flat spring secured upon the stale above plate B, and having a notch or slot, f: adapt-ed to receive the stud d upon key D, which latter may thereby be kept in a locked position.

When locked the stud or bit upon key D should point in a direction opposite to the bit 0 of key 0, as shown.

To remove the bow from the stale, it should be turned to such a position that its one side may be disengaged from the fixed key 0, which latter should have its bit pointed toward the lower end of the stale, thus making it impossible for this position to be assumed when the poke is in position upon the animal. One side of the yoke having thus been disengaged, the springE is lifted, so as to release the stud d of key D, which latter may now readily be turned to such a position that the bow may be removed. To readjust the how, the above operation is reversed.

The cross-piece F, at the upper end or head of the stale, is provided with bails G G, between which is placed a plate, H, provided with sharp-pointed pins II, which pass through perforations i in the cross-piece F.

Springs J J are coiled around the pins I I and work against the plate H and cross-piece F, thus preventing the points. from projecting upon the rear side of the cross-piece until the animal wearing the poke shall attempt to interfere with fences, when the pressure of the plate H against the yoke will cause the points to protrude and prick the breast of the animal.

Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improvement in fastenings for animal-pokes, the plate B,having slot 0 and rigid projection or key 0 o, in combination with the key D, having stud cl, and the spring E, having slot f, as set forth.
