tinental Can Company, Inc.,
Pelham, N. Y., assignor to Con- New York, N. Y.,
a corporation of New York Application April 8, 1939, Serial No. 266,807
, 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and use ful improvements in dispensing containers, and more particularly to improvements in a container having a bung closure and a pouring spout adapted to be attached thereto for dispensing the contents-of the container.
An object of the present invention is to provide a dispensing container of the above type wherein the pouring spout is provided with a depending open-ended wall portion extending within and adapted to be detachably connected to the bung closure, the bottom wall of which may be punctured throughout substantially the entire extent thereof for providing a dispensing opening adapted to register with the open end of the depending wall portion of the spout.
A further object of the invention is to pro-- vide a dispensing container of the above type wherein a friction closure plug is adapted to fit within the depending wall portion of the pouring spout in order to re-seal the container after the bottom wall of the bung closure has been punctured and a portion of the contents has been dispensed.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a dispensing container of the above type wherein the bung closure is provided with a depending side wall extending within the container, this side well being provided with inwardly directed holding means adapted to cooperate with similar holding means on th depending wall portion of the pouring spout whereby to detachably connect the spout to the closure.
The above and other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will be hereinafter more fully pointed out.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a container with the pouring spout attached to the bung closure and with the friction closure plug attached to the pouring spout, the pouring spout being shown in dotted lines disposed within the side wall of the container.
Figure ,2 is an enlarged fragmentary side view, in section, taken along the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view of the'pouring spout.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view of the friction closure.
Referring more in detail'to the accompanying drawing, one form of the invention is shown for purposes of illustration. In this form of the invention, there is shown a container having a substantially rectangular body portion II to I3 on the can end which a can end II is secured by the usual double seam I2. It is to be clearly understood, of course, that the body portion of the container may be of any desired shape and that the can end II may be secured thereto in any suitable 5 manner. The can end II is provided with an upstanding neck portion l3 which extends around the edge of a filling opening therein. The neck portion I3 is illustrated as being slightly inclined outwardly toward the free edge 10 thereof.
A cup-like bung closure is provided for closing the filling opening in the can end II, and this bung closure includes a depending wall portion I4 and a bottom wall portion I5 disposed within the body portion of the container. The depending 'wall portion I4 is similarly inclined with respect to the neck portion I I, that is, the wall portion I4 is slightly inclined inwardly. of the wall portion I4 is shaped to overlie and engage the neck portion I3 on the cam end II. The edge Ila and the neck portion I3 may be secured together in any suitable manner. The
depending wall portion I4 of the bung closure 25 is provided with an inwardly extending bead I6 which is illustrated as being disposed intermediate the ends of the wall portion I4 and below the can end II and which is also spaced above the bottom wall I5 of the bung closure. inward bead I6 provides an annular holding flange for removably and rotatably securing a pouring spout thereto in a manner to be more fully pointed out. The bottom wall I5 of the bung closure includes a central portion Ilia which is defined by a circular score line H. The portion I5a within the score line I! provides a portion of substantially the entire extent of the bottom wall I5 which may be removed to provide a dispensing opening through which the contents of the container may be poured.
A pouring spout I8 is constructed so that it may be removably and rotatably attached to the bung closure. The pouring spout is provided with a pouring lip'portion substantially cylindrical wall portion 20 in rear of the pouring lip. The edge of the pouring spout is provided with an outward bead II which serves to strengthen the same and the depending wall portion 20 is open so as to provide an openso ing 22 which substantially registers with the removable portion I5a in the bottom of the bung closure. Thus, when the portion I5a is removed from the bottom of the bung closure, the contents of the container may which is 15 The free edge I411 20 This 30 I9 and a depending be directed through the opening 22 to the pouring lip I9. The bottom edge of the depending wall portion 20 on the spout I8 is shaped to provide an outward beard 23 which is slightly resilient due to the provision of the opening 22. This outward bead 23 is adapted to fit beneath the inward bead ii on the depending wall i4 of the bung closure so that the pouring spout may be removably attached thereto. Thus, the diameter of the wall portion 20 of the pouring spout is less than the diameter of the edge l4a of the bung closure which is secured to the neck portion I3 in the can end.
A cup-shaped friction closure plug 24 is provided with a vertical and substantially cylindrical wall portion 25 and a closed bottom wall 26. The free edge of the vertical wall 25 is provided with an outward strengthening bead 27. The vertical wall portion 25 of the friction closure 24 is adapted to extend within and to frictionally engage the inner surface of the depending wall portion 20 on the pouring spout i8 above the bead 23. When the friction closure 24 is in this position, the bottom wall 26 thereon serves to close the opening 22 at the bottom of the pouring spout l8. The side walls of the pouring lip l8 are extended outwardly and are suitably shaped so that the outward bead 21 on the friction closure 24 is disposed adjacent the rear portion of the bead 2| on the pouring spout and adjacent the rear portion of the pouring lip i9.
When the container has been filled and the bung closure secured to the upstanding neck portion I3 around the filling opening therein, the pouring spout l8 may be attached directly to the bung closure, or it may be furnished separately for subsequent attachment thereto. Likewise, the friction closure 24 may be within the depending wall portion 20 on the pouring spout and thus transported as a unit. In attaching the pouring spout [8 to the bung closure, it is forced inwardly of the bung closure so that the inward bead IE on the bung closure and the outward bead 23 on the pouring spout will give slightly so as to afford a snap fitting between the spout and the bung closure. Thus, the pouring spout may be rotated relative to the can end so that the lip portion l9 thereof may extend beyond the double seam l2 in a dispensing position and be disposed within the side wall of the container in an inoperative position.
When it is desired to dispense the contents of the container, or a portion thereof, the friction closure 24 is removed and the portion l5a of the bottom wall ii of the bung closure is removed along the score line I! so as to provide a dispensing opening. When the pouring lip 19 extends over the edge of the container, the contents thereof may be directed through the dispensing opening, the opening 22 in the depending wall 20 of the spout and to the pouring lip i9. If only a portion of the contents of the container is to be dispensed, the friction closure 24 may be fitted within the depending wall portion 20 on the pouring spout so as to close the opening 22 therein. Thus, the friction closure 24 provides a reseal or re-closure for preventing further dispensing of the contents of the container.
While one form of the invention has been shown for purposes of illustration, it is to be clearly understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
