Claims.

Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the above described character which is simple in construction, durable in use, eflicient in operation and economical in manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claims and annexed drawing.

Figure 1 is a top plan view, partly in section, of a lubricant shroud arranged about the drive shaft of a motor vehicle between the end of the transmission casing and the opposite end of the universal joint, said shroud being secured in said position by means of lengths of wire formed with a loop and stretched by my novel form of device.

In order to teach my invention and its use, as illustrated in the drawing, I utilize by way of example only, a lubricant shroud 5 arranged about a shaft between the opposed ends of a transmission casing 6 and a universal joint 'l and which shroud is secured about said shaft by means of a pair of lengths of wire 8 extending through and about said shroud, the lengths of wire 8 having been formed with loops 9 and overlapped ends I0 by the use of my invention, it
being distinctly understood that the shroud per se forms no part of the present invention as the latter may be employed for securing lengths of wire about various other objects as desired.
As illustrated in the drawing, my invention comprises abarrel I I formed with a longitudinally extending bore vI2 which receives therethrough an end section I3 of a length of Wire 8. The barrel is rotatably mounted in the bifurcated or forked ends of an arm A hereinafter more fully described. One end of the barrel II is provided with a hook-like member I4 extending therefrom and defining a seat which receives thereon a transversely disposed end I5 of a loop I5 which has previously been formed on the end section t3 of the wire. Said member serves to maintain the end I5 in xed relation with the barrel upon rotation o-f the loop with respect to the barrel. The loopfmay be rotated'bymeans of grasping the same with a pair of pliers or the like or rotating the end section of the wire I3. When the loop is thus rotated with respect to the barrel, the member I4 functions to twist or enwrap the end I5 about the end section I3 adjacent the loop I6 whereby to completely form and maintain the loop in fixed relation with respect to the end section I3. p
As heretofore stated, the barrelis rotatably mounted within the forked ends i8 of the arm A, the latter having connected sections I9. The barrel, adjacent the outer sides of the ends Iii,
Ais formed with circumferentially extending grooves 2l) in which are mounted split rings 2I to maintain said barrel within the arm A as clearly illustrated in the drawing.
The opposite end of the barrel II is fashioned with a transversely extending passage 22 for receiving the end of a handle 23 whereby said barrel may be rotated with respect to the arm A and for a purpose hereinafter more fully described. The barrel is also fashioned, between its ends, with a transversely extending bore 2d for receiving the opposite end of the wire 8.
Upon formation of the loop on the end'section I3, as heretofore described, the length of wire is removed from the barrel and the opposite end section inserted through and about the shroud 5, with said opposite end section disposed through 'the loop I6. When the length of wire is thus arranged, said opposite end section is inserted through an opening 25 formed in the opposite end of the arm A, and upwardly into the bore 24 of the barrel with said opposite end of the arm engaging the loop I6 as clearly illustrated in Figure 6. When the parts are thus arranged, the barrel is rotated with respect to the arm A thereby Winding said opposite end of the length of wire about the barrel and effecting tightening of the wire about the shroud. When the wire has become suciently tight about the shroud, the arm A is moved in a direction away from the loop and toward the shroud to form a hooked portion 2E extending through said loop I6 whereupon the wire is cut and the free end pressed inwardly to secure the same xed to the loop.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that I have provided a simple and eicient device for forming loops on the end of a length of Wire and stretching said Wire through said loops.
It is also obvious that the invention is not conmied to the herein described use therefor as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is therefore to be distinctly understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described, as the same is only illustrative of the principles of operation, which are capable of extended application in advance forms, and that the invention comprehends all construction Within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A device of the character described, comprising, barrel having a longitudinal bore adapted to receive therethrough an end section of a length of wire for encircling arrangement about an article. one end of said barrel provided with a member extending therefrom and defining a seat for receiving a transversely disposed end o a loop formed on the end of said end section for maintaining the same in xed relation with respect to the barrel upon relative rotation of the loop and barrel to enwrap said transversely disposed end about said end section adjacent said loop, an arm having one end connected to said barrel for relative rotation and formed with a Wire receiving passage extending therethrough, said barrel formed with a transverse bore between its ends and registering with said passage for receiving the end of the opposite end section oi said length of wire when said opposite end section is disposed through said loop and said passage for tightening said length of Wire about said article upon rotation of said barrel with respect to said arm and movement of said arm with respect to said loop and in a direction away from the latter.

A device of the character described, comprising, a barrel having a longitudinal bore adapted to receive therethrough an end section of a length of wire for encircling arrangement about an article, one end of said barrel provided with a member extending therefrom and defining a seat for receiving a transversely disposed end of a loop formed on the end of said end section for maintaining the same in xed relation with respect to the barrel upon relative rotation of the loop and barrel to enwrap said transversely disposed end about said end section adjacent said loop, an arm having one end connected to said barrel for relative rotation and formed with a wire receiving passage extending therethrough, said barrel formed with a transverse bore between its ends and registering with said passage for receiving the end of the opposite end section of said length of Wire when said opposite end section is disposed through said loop and said passage for tightening said length of Wire about said article upon rotation of said barrel with respect to said arm and movement of said arm with respect to said loop and in a direction away from the latter, and means for rotating said barrel with respect to said arm.

A device of the character described, comprising, a barrel having a longitudinal bore adapted to receive therethrough an end section of a length of Wire for encircling arrangement about an article, one end of said barrel provided with a member extending therefrom and defining a seat for receiving a transversely disposed end of a loop formed on the end of said end section for maintaining the same in xed relation with respect to the barrel upon relative rotation of the loop and barrel to en'vvrap said transversely disposed end about said end section adjacent said loop, an arm having one end connected to said barrel for relative rotation and formed with a wire' receiving passage extending therethrough, said barrel formed With a transverse bore between its ends and registering with said passage for receiving the end of the opposite end section of said length of wire when said opposite end section is disposed through said loop and said passage for tightening said length of wire about said article upon rotation oi said barrel with respect to said arm and movement of said arm with respect to said loop and in a direction away from the latter, the opposite end of said barrel formed with an opening transversing said longitudinal bore and a handle having an end detachably carried in said opening for rotating said barrel relatively to said arm.

A pair of rotatable members one mounted within the other for relative rotation, one of said members formed with an axially extending bore adapted to receive therethrough the end section of a length of wire engageable about an article and provided with means for receiving a transerse end of a loop formed on the end of said section for maintaining the end in fixed relation with respect to the first dened member upon relative rotation of the latter and looped to enwrap said end about said section proximous said loop, said rst dei-ined member formed With a transversely extending bore for receiving the end of the oppositely disposed end section of said length of wire when the last-mentioned end is disposed through said loop for tightening said length of wire about said article upon relative rotation of said members.
5. The structure of claim 4 as set forth and deiined therein including, means carried by one of said members for rotating the same with respect to the other.
