Description
H. A. 'WHITINGQ Hat and other Head Covering.
No. 219,549. Patented Sept. 9,1879.
N4 PETERS. FNOTG-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D 0.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
HENRY A. WHITING, OF BROOKLYN ,NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN HATS AND OTHER HEAD-COVERINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,549, dated September 9, 1879; application filed August 14, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY AQWHITING, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hats and other Head- Uoverings, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accom panying drawing, which represents a sectional side view of a hat embodying my invention. I
This invention is a head-covering consisting of two layers of angola plush or othersimilar soft material, which are put together with the nap exposed and without any intervening layer, whereby I obtain an article which is light and pliable, and which has an elegant appearance.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a hat made according to my invention, 1) 0 be ing the two layers of angola plush or other similar soft material. H
In carrying out my invention I unite the two layers 12 c by an adhesive substance, with their plain sides facing each other, thereby exposing the nap, and press the double fabric thus obtained to the desired shape in any usual or suitable manner.
It will be seen that the head-covering pro duced in this manner has very little weight, and is sufficiently pliable to bendwithout breaking, while by its two napped surfaces it acquires a very elegant appearance.
' I am aware that it is old to make a headcovering of two layers of canton-flannel, with exposed nap and an intervening layer of buckram or other similar material, and such not being within the scope of my invention I hereby disclaim the same.
In my head-covering 1 use no intervening layer, and thus render the same light and pliable to a maximum degree.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A head-covering consisting of two layers of angola plush or other similar soft material, which are put together with the nap exposed and without any intervening layer, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 7th day of August, 1879.
HENRY A. WHI'IING. [L. 8.]
