Description

March 12, 1940. c. J. DE MUTH CURTAIN FIXTURE Filed March 24, 1938 Patented Mar. 12, 1940 CURTAIN FIXTURE Charles J. De Muth, Boston, Mass, assignor to William J. McDonald, Malden, Mass.-
Application March 24, 1938, Serial No. 197,819
a c ai s, (Cl.,156 22) w This invention relates to improvements incurtain fixtures. More particularly it relates to an improved bracket and rod structure and assembly for hanging window curtains and drapes, and
8,- providing for swing of each curtain section and drape section, independently of each other, toward and away from the window;
, Curtain fixtures as heretofore proposed, forpermitting independent swinging adjustment of thescurtain sections and of overdrape sections,
haveinvolved the use of intricate and cumbersome brackets which have been generally unsatisfactory as wellas being impracticably expensive to manufacture. Y
The present invention has among its objects to provide a curtain and drape fixture wherein a separate extensible and contractible rod is provided for each curtain section and for each drape section, all mounted, for individual swinging, in
a pair of brackets which conveniently and economically maybe stamped from sheet metal.
Another object is to effectively coordinate a curtain rod and a drape rod in each bracket with the drape rod maintained at a desired higher level than the curtain rod. 1 i
Afurther object is to provide simple yet eiiective means at the free end of each rod, for maintaining its curtain or drape against slipping from the rod.
A feature resides in the bracket structure which permits each bracket to serve either on the right side or the left side of a Window casing.
It is, moreover, an important feature that my improved fixture, while providing for efiective arrangement of the drapes around the brackets, contributes to a generally pleasing aesthetic treatment.
Thementioned objects and results may be attained with a bracket structure having a U-por- L0 tion within which one end of a curtain rod may he hingedly mounted, and upon which one end of i a drape rod may be hingedly mounted, each said rod being movable about its hinge, from a normal position whereit may extend approxi- 15 mately parallel to the windowcasing, outward through at least 90.
The bracket conveniently and economically may be stamped from suitably stiff sheet metal, and it is a feature of importance that the brack- 0 ets of each pair may beidentical in form and structure so that either may be used on the right side of a Window casing, and either may be used on the left side by merelyinverting that one relative to the other.
5 Both the curtain rod and the drape rod for each bracket may be extensible and contractiblato fitvarious sizes of windows; and each rod, at its free end, has means preventing slipping of curtain or drape from the rod.
The rods are readily removable from a-bracket by merely lifting out a hinge bolt in the 'one,and by merely lifting the other bodily from the bracket.
Only relatively small projection of the brackets, from the casing outward, is needed; and this projecting part may be further utilized for securing a drape in an attractive manner, to cover and v obscure the brackets. However, the brackets, when left visible, are of design to contribute to a generally attractive aesthetic window treatment.
It is intended that the patent shall cover, by suitable expression in the appended claims, whatever features of patentable novelty exist in the invention disclosed.
In the accompanying drawing; 20
, Figure 1 is a perspective of the upper portion of a window casing equipped with fixtures embodying features of the invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective of one of the brackets of Figure I, greatly enlarged, and showing the curtain and drape rods mounted therein, a midportion of each rod being broken away; i and Figurefi is a side elevation of the bracket of FigureZ, looking from the right in Figure 2, the rods being shown in section. 30 Referring to the drawing, a pair of brackets l0, l2, one at each side of the window, high on i the window casing l4, pivotally support the curtain rods l6, l8 and the drape rods 20, 22, so that each rod may swing toward and away from the window.
The brackets l0, l2 each has a generally U form, but in use they are disposed with the mouth 24 of each U toward the window casing, and with the bridge 26 of each U spaced outward from and parallel to the plane of the casing. As represented, the space between the U-arms 28, 30 corresponds approximately to the breadth of the curtain rod l6, so that the cylindrical end portion 32 of the rod can fit upright within the U. The 5 U-arms may extend in parallelism at right angles to the plane of casing l4 but, as represented they depart from parallelism a little inward of the desired location of the curtain rod, extending thence obliquely toward the casing as at 42, 44, each arm terminating in a foot 46. The cylinder 32 of rod I6 preferably is located between the innermost parallel portions of the U-arms, close to their inner edges, and may be secured by mere- 1y dropping a bolt 34 through hole 36 in arm 28, 615
hole 38 in the cylinder and hole 40 in arm 30.
- With this simple construction, rod It has a firm pivotal bearing in the bracket, yet may be readily and quickly removed by merely lifting out bolt 34.
Forwarder the curtain rod bearing, the U-form of the bracket has less breadth of metal, so that the curtain rod Hi can swing through 90 from its normal position of parallelism with casing IA.
Each curtain rod 5,18 prefer-ably consists-of the telescoping sections l6, It or l8, [8' whereby it readily may be adjusted as to length. And the free end of each has at the front face of the rod,
an overlying tongue 36 within which the curtain through 90 relative to the main body, and this bent end 58 or 52 sticks down through the forward, vertically aligned round holes 54,55, respectively in the U-arms 2B and 3b. Each rod 20, 22, is thus hingedly retained in a horizontal plane, with ability to swing inward to parallelism with casing Hi, and outward as far as may be desired, even to'theextent of being parallel with the Wall on the, outer sideof-thebracket,
Slidable pin or clip holders Ed, may be strung on the rods Z28, 22, fr suspension of drapes. And one or more holes 5-2 in the U-arm whichhappens to be uppermostprovides for securing the drape attractively around the bracket;
It is a feature of the inventionthat the brackets it, I2 may be identical in structure and in form, each being adaptedfor serving at the right'orthe left side of the window by. mere inversion of the bracket at one or the other location. Therefore the bracket of Figures 2 audit which show a structure and arrangement for the left side of a window, would be the samebut inverted for the right side.
I claim as my invention:
1. A curtain rod fixture comprising :a U-form bracket having feet for mounting'the bracket with the mouth ofthe U toward the mounting surface; a curtain rod having one end portion formed as a bearing for fitting between the arms of said U- body; a forward portion of the U-body being reduced substantially in breadth by removal of metal from one side edge; there being aligned holes through the arms of the U rearward at a location of greater breadth of U-body and close to thatside edge from whichmetal was removed; and there being a hole through saidibearing portion of the rod for registering with said aligned holes; and a hinge pin inserted through all of said holes.
2; Aipurtain rod fixture comprising a U-form bracket. having feetfor mounting the bracket with the mouth of the U toward the mounting surface; a curtain rod having one end portion formed asai bearing: for fitting between the arms of said U-body; and a drape rod having one end portion" bent approximately at a right angle to i the main portion, of" the rod and extending through aligned holes in} the arms of the U, adjacent to the bridge, of the; U, with the rod hingedly supported on and having abearing on the upper arm of theU; the forward vportion of the U-body at whichsaidrdrape rodis mounted being reduced in breadth by removalof metal from one; side edge; andsaid bearing portion of, the curtain rod being hingedly mounted between thearms-of the U at arearward locationof greater breadth of U- body,, and close to that side edge from which metal was removed,
3.v A-windowframe fixture comprising a U-form bracket adapted to be mounted on a Window frame; with the mouth of the U toward the. casingand-with the arms of, the U disposed one above the other, said bracketlhavin'g substantially less breadth at the bridge of the, U than at the mouth of the U,, combined with a curtain rod pivotally mounted atoneend between the arms of the U at alocation adjacent to the mouth of the U and oifsetv sidewise with respect: to an. edge of the bridge-of the U; and a drape rod pivotally mounted, on andnabove the, upper arm ofthe U; at. a location adjacent to the bridge ofthe U; both. of said rods beingstraight from the axes of; their mountsto the,tips,oftheirfreeends,and each beineswingable independently of the other through at least 90 from parallelism with said casing.
