corporation of Ohio Application May 4, 1938, SerialNa 206,007 Claims. (o1..'221 s) This invention relates to a device for dispensing charges of fluent material and is of particular usefulness in the dispensing of powdered soap and like materials.
An object of the invention'is to provide a device of this kind which obviates leakage and consequent waste of the material.
Another object is to provide a dispenser in I which a sufficient charge of the dispensable material is released by a single movement of the actuating member.
Another object is the elimination, in a device of this kind, of spring and similar means which ordinarilybecome clogged and ineffective after a period of use.
Another objectis the provision of such a dispenser in which the parts are simple and readily assembled and taken apart.
These and other objects are attained by the means described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 isa front elevational view of the dispen ser of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is across-sectional View taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan View of the dispenser.
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional View on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
With reference to the drawing:
The device comprises a container 8 which may be cylindrical as shown, and which, at the bottom, is preferably tapered, such as by the use of the downwardly tapered sections 9 and I0 forming the lower portions of the container. The top of the container may be closed by a suitable cover II and the body of the container'provided with a pair. of attachment brackets I2 for fastening the device to a wall or suitable support.
The lowermost section In of the container, which is removable from the section 9, is provided with a bottom I3 provided with a dispensing aperture I l (Figs. 3, 4 and 5).
The edge portion of the bottom 13, adjacent the aperture I4, is built up and formed, as indicated at l 5 (Fig. 3), to provide an arcuate ledge l6 (Fig. 5) terminating in a pair of abutments I! and I8.
A dispensing member or wheel I9 is rotatably mounted in the container section NJ, on the bottom l3. The Wheel is supported centrally upon the inner end of an actuator 20. This end of the actuator is formed to provide a primary shoulder 2| contacting the outer face of the bottom l3, a
,face of the dispensing member Hi. The latter is secondary shoulder 22 projecting through a perforation 23 in the bottom of the container and having the dispensing member or wheel 89 resting thereagainst and a squared portion 24 projecting into a similarly formed recess 25 in the bottom formed with an upstanding hub 26 and this hub, as well as the inner end of the actuator 20, as seen in Fig. 3, is perforated for receiving a screw bolt 2'! adapted to receive nuts '20 on the inner end thereof for holding the various movable parts together. I
The dispensin wheel I9 is formed, as shown herein, with radial arms 29. It will be seen in Fig/5' thatrrecessed portions and fill between three of said arms 28 are adapted to cooperate with the dispensing aperture is of the bottom it, these recessed portions each being of substantially the same sizeand shape asthe dispensing aperture. As seen. in Fig. 5, the actuator 29 has been turned toward the front of the container into contact with a stop 32 provided on the bottom of the container, the stop being so positioned as to limit movement of the dispensing wheel to a position wherein the recessed portion 3i thereof is in substantial registration with the dispensing aperture I4. A similar stop 33 is provided toward the rear of the bottom it and is adapted to stop the actuator 2G in such position that the other of the recessed dispensing portions, namely, the recessed portion 3%; will register with the dispensing aperture I4 when the actuator 20 has been moved to the position seen in dotted lines. A baffie plate 34 is positioned in the container portion l0 above the dispensing aperture M and is of such size and shape, as seen particularly in Fig. 2, as to cover the two adjacent arms 29 of the dispensing wheel. The baffle plate has its outer edge resting upon the ledge It and its inner edge resting upon the hub portion 35 of the dispensing wheel. A washer 36 disposed beneath the nuts 28 on the bolt 27, projects outwardly so as to bear against the baffle plate and hold it in position. The abutments Ill and I8 at the ends of the arcuate ledge prevent lateral movement of the baffle plate.
The distance between the bottom l3 and the bafile plate 34 is substantially equal to the thickness of the arms 29 of the dispensing wheel so that said arms are received snugly therebetween, and inasmuch as the ends of the arms extend into close adjacency with the built-up portion i5 of the bottom of the container, as seen in Fig. 3,1eakage of the dispensed material through the aperture I4 is substantially precluded.
It will be obvious that when one of the recessed portions 30 or 3! of the dispensing member is in dispensing or registering relation with the aperture [4, the other recessed portion is disposed clear of the bafile plate 34 for receiving a charge of the fluent material which, upon movement of the actuator 20 in the opposite direction, is carried to and dispensed through said aperture. The arms of the dispensing member, other than those which actually carry the dispensable material to release position, are useful in functioning as agitators to preclude caking and solidifying of the fluent material at the bottom of the container.
For repair and replacement of parts, the bottom section H! of the container is simply removed from operative position in which it may be held by means of screw bolts 31 (Fig. 1) and thereafter the bolt 21, uniting the structural details of the bottom of the container, is withdrawn for disassociating the parts.
What is claimed is:
l. A dispenser for fluent material and comprising a container formed with a bottom provided with a relatively small outlet aperture, a bafile plate positioned in the container above and in spaced and aligned relation with said outlet, said plate conforming substantially with the outline of said outlet, a dispensing member mounted in the container forreciprocation on said'bottom, said dispensing member comprising three arms receivable between said plate and outlet and defining a pair of recesses each of substantially the same outline as said outlet, an operating handle connected to the dispensing member and operable exteriorly of the container, and means limiting operation of said handle to a back and forth movement, said handle and dispensing member being connected in such relation that movement of the handle to its respective limits carries one of said recesses into full registry with said outlet beneath the bafiie plate for dispensing a charge of material while the other of said recesses is carried clear of said plate to receive a full charge of material;
2. A dispenser for fluent material and comprising a container formed with a bottom provided with a relatively small outlet aperture, a bafile plate positioned in the container above and in spaced and aligned relation with said outlet, said plate conforming substantially with the outline of said outlet, a dispensing member mounted in the container for reciprocation on said bottom, said dispensing member comprising three arms receivable between said plate and outlet and defining a pair of recesses each of substantially the same outline as said outlet, an operating handle connected to the dispensing member and operable exteriorly of the container, means limiting operation of said handle to a back and forth movement, said handle and dispensing member being connected in such relation that movement of the handle to its respective limits carries one of said recesses into full registry with said outlet beneath the baflle plate for dispensing a charge of material while the other of said recesses is carried clear of said plate to receive a full charge of material,
and means on the non-dispensing portions of the dispensing member for agitating the material in the container.
3. A dispenser for powdered and like materials and comprising a cylindrical container formed with a bottom provided with an outlet aperture,
a ledge formed in the container along the outer edge of said outlet, a dispensing member rotatably mounted in the container on said bottom and comprising a pair of arms forming a recess for receiving dispensable material, said arms being of such length as to pass said ledge in close adjacency therewith to obviate leakage of said material between said parts, abafile plate in the container above said outlet and providing for passage of said arms therebeneath, and means for moving the dispensing member from the exterior of the container. I

In a dispenser for powdered and like materials, the combination of a container formed with a bottom having an outlet therein, a ledge formed in the container along the outer edge of the outlet, a dispensing member rotatably mounted in the container on said bottom and comprising a pair of arms forming a recess for receivingdispensable material, said arms being of such length as to pass said ledge in close adjacency therewith to avoid leakage of said material between said parts, and means for rotating the dispensing member from the exterior of the container.
5. A dispenser for powdered or like materials and comprising'a container formed with a bottom provided with an outlet, a ledge formed in the container along the outer edge portion only of said outlet, a dispensing member rotatably mounted in the container on said bottom and comprising a pair of arms forming a recess for receiving dispensable material, said arms, upon movement of the dispensing member, passing said ledge in close adjacency therewith to avoid leakage'of material between said parts, said dispensing a baffle plate in the container above said outlet and positioned to provide for passage of said'arms therebeneath, and means for operating the dispensing member from the exterior of the container.
