No. 219,184. Patented S ept.) 2,1879.

UNITEDSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. TALBOT, MOUNT PLEASANT, IOWA.
,IMPROVEMENLJN SHANK-STIFFENERS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
' I Specification forming paijt 'af Letters Patent No. 219,184, dated September 2, 1879; application filed June 9, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. TALBOT, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Henry and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boot and Shoe Shank Stifteners, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a metallic plate, to be applied externally as a support and stiffener to the shanks of boots and shoes.
Heretofore metallic plates and other kinds of material have been used internally as shankstiffeners, having been'placed there whilemanufacturing said boots or shoes, and which cannot be applied if omitted at the time of manufacturing the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a A shank-stiffener which maybe applied to boots or shoes at any time desired, even to straighten or strengthen a boot or shoe that has commenced to twist while in wear.
The invention consists in a metallic plate shaped to fit outside the shank; or it may be made more oval, or have an inverted flute lengthwise in its center, leaving a recess'between it and the shank, which space may be filled with additional stitfening material.
In the accompanying drawings, inwhich similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is a View of the bottom of a shoe, showing the stiffener attached embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detached view of said stiiiener; and Fig. 3 is a view of a section taken at the dotted line i i, Fig. 2.
Arepresents the bottom of a shoe-sole; H, the heel, and O the stiffener, the latter of which is made of sheet metal, is provided with two or more points, 0, at its rear end for insertion into the heel, andalso a suitable number of holes around its edge for the reception of nails or screws for fastening to the shank. It may be made to fit the shank snugly, or provided with a longitudinal intervening recess, as shown at f or said recess may extend to near the whole width of said plate, and the recess filled with additional stiffening material, if desired.
It is'to be applied in use by inserting the points 0, by suitable means, into the heel close to the sole, and otherwise fastening to the bottom by means of nails or screws.
Having thus fully described my invention, so as to enable others skilled in the art to make the same, what I claim as new, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improved metallic shank-stiffener for boots and shoes, consisting of the plate 0, provided with the longitudinal recess f and attaching-prongs c, all substantially as shown and described.
GEORGE L. TALBOT.
