CHECK BOOK William Roy flotchkiss, St. Paul, Minn. Application October 24, 1936, Serial No. 107,436 12 Claims. (01. 281-19) The present invention relates to an improve such a mannerthat they are readily accessible ment in pocket check books of a type particularly for use and in a cover container that will slide designed to accommodate a small number of easily in and'out of a pocket or purse. checks in a compact folder. The invention also It is a purpose of my invention to provide a includes a particular construction of check book closure means for a folding check book of a type 5 wherein the memorandum portion of the book designed to obviate the over-lapping closure flap may be folded flat with respect to the checks previously used. This closure comprises ahook themselves, to facilitate the recording of a means secured at one end of the foldable backmemorandum of the dates on which the checks ing member or cover, which hooks into engagewere written, as well as a notation of the re-' mentwith the bound end of the pad of checks 10 cipient of the check, the amount of the check, held in a pocket in the backingv member or cover the balance of the account, and other desired inin the usual manner; or into engagement with a formation. It is also my invention to provide a pocket arranged for this purpose formed at the cover for a book of checks which may be quickly opposite end of the cover from the hook, This 5 and easily fastened in closed position without hook means is preferably spaced inwardly somehaving the fastening device protrude outside the what from the extreme edges of the backing cover. member, and accordingly is out of contact with A great number of check books of various types other articles held in the same pocket or purse. have been designed in the past. B and a filler C therefor. The covering member B is formed of a sheet of paper, fabric, leather, fibre or the like, and comprises a sheet in of rectangular shape and slightly larger than the pad of checks to be accommodated therein. The
sheet l E] is reinforced by a pair of stiffening menu-- sheet Ill, with the exception of a strip 14 at the:
center of the sheet which is not reinforced, providing a more flexible central strip through which the covering member B may be folded.
A closing hook I5 is secured near one end of the covering member B. This'closing hook comprises an anchoring plate 56, from which extends along one edge a curved hook shaped flange i8, terminating in a portion substantially parallel to, and spaced from, the anchoring plate #6.. The anchoring plate is is formed, as may be seen, wider at the edge thereof opposite the closing hook flange I8, and the hook flange I8 is connected to the wider portion of the anchoring plate It by a narrower portion T9 of the anchoring plate. This construction forms a'pair of shoulders 29 which firmly anchor the closing hook I5 to the cover in a manner which will be hereinafter more clearly described. If desired, an opening 2! maybe formed through this plate It, the purpose of which will also be later described in detail.
A pocket 22 is formed adjacent the end of the covering sheet Iii opposite the end thereof supporting the closing hook- I5. This pocket is formed by a stiffening sheet 23 overlying the stif- Throughout the length of this stilfening sheet 23, the marginal edges E3 of the covering sheet I!) enclose the edges of this sheet as well as the stiffening sheet I I, thus firmly securing the side edges of the stiffening sheet 23 to the covering sheet in. An inner lining member 24 or fly sheet is glued over the inturned edges of the covering member "Lover the anchoring plate It of thefastening hook l5, and is turned over the free edge 25 of the pocket 22, as may be seen in Figures 4 and 7 of'the drawings. The marginal edge l3 of the covering sheet I0 adjacent the open end 25- of the pocket 22 is sufiiciently wide to conceal the stiffening sheet H the end 25 of the pocket 22overlapping this marginal edge I3. 7
As may be seen in Figure 4 of the drawings, the stiffening means terminates at its inner end 26, as does the stiffening sheet I i, at a point spaced from the longitudinal center of the covering sheet It to provide the central flexible strip M. This inner end 2-6 of the stifiening member 23 is held closed by the inner "lining 24, which is secured directly to the inner surface of the covering sheet l0 over the area of the flexible strip I4.
The lining sheet 24- also extends over the anchoring plate portion [6 of the closing hook l5. As this closing hook is formed of relatively stiff material, such as metal, and anticipating that the liner 24 will not adhere to this closing hook as well as to the stiffening member 2 which the anchoring plate I6 overlies, the hook flange I8 is spaced by the narrower strip I9 tothe Wider portion of the anchoring plate 16. The liner 24 is accordingly adhered to the stiffening member l2 on either side of the narrower portion 13 of the closing hook l5, sealing the anchoring into the body of the plate 43.
The shoulders 20 formed by the provision of the narrower portion is are locked by the adherence of the lining member 24 to the stilfening member l2.
In the form of construction at present incommercial use, the opening 2! through the anchoring plate It is eliminated. If a more secure anchor for the closing hook I5 is desired, however, the opening may be provided, so that the inner lining 24 may adhere to the stiffening member I2 through this opening, sealing the closing hook l5 even more securely in position.
The pad of checks 2? forms a part of the filler C. The pad 27 comprises a series of superimposed blank checks, each having a line of perforations 29 parallel to, and spaced a short distance from, one end thereof, to provide a bind ing margin 30 for each check 3|. The superimposedchecks 3| are attached together by staples 32 or other suitable means extending through the binding margins 30 on each check 3 An anchoring tongue 33 adapted to extend into the pocket 22 to hold the pad 27 in place is also attached by means of the staples 32 to the binding margins 30 of the checks. A strip of tape 34 extends over the binding margins 3!] of the checks, and a portion of the anchoring tongue to cover the staples 32 and to more effectively bind these elements together.
The memorandum portion 35 of the filler C comprises a series of I together by stitching plate from four sides.
31 or the like, illustrated in Figures 6 and 7 of the drawings. In Figure 6 of the drawings the memorandum portion 35 is shown overlying the check pad 27, while aflexible tape 39, adhered to the bottom of the check pad, over the strip of tape 34, is ready for attachment with the upper surface of the memorandum portion 35. Figure 7 attached to, theuppermost sheet 36 of the memorandum portion 35. The stitching 3? permits the various leaves 36 to be folded from the center, each sheet 36 forming two leaves of the memorandum portion 35. The indicia 40- on the sheets 36, upon which checks is to be kept, is directly above the pad of checks '2'! when Written entries are to be made thereupon, thereby assuring the use of a flat and smooth surface for writing.
The cover D illustrated in Fig. 8 comprises a covering sheetA'I, over which are positioned a pair of spacedreinforcing plates 42 and 43. A stiffening sheet overlies one reinforcing plate 42, to form a pocket 44 between the stiffening sheet 45 and the reinforcing plate 42. The marginal edges 46 of the sheet 4| are folded over the edges of the plates 42 and 43 along the sides and ends of the cover, to provide a turned edge. A lining sheet 41 overlies the reinforcing plate 47 and the.
shows the tape 39-over, and
a record of the various sheets 36 centrally secured of the sheet 4|, to conceal theseyedges. The end 49 of the lining sheet 4'! is folded over the free edge of the stiffening sheet 45 to provide a turned edge for the pocket 44.
The reinforcing plates are formed of metal or of comparatively rigid material. At one end 55 of the plate 43, a pairof spaced slots 5| extend Between these slots 5| a hook 52 is formed by bending this portion of the materialforming the reinforcing plate into hook shape. In this manner, the hook 52 is formed at a point spaced inwardly slightly from the extreme end 59 of the plate 43. By this construction the hook is made integral with the reinforcing means, eliminating a separate reinforce cover D.
' In the'use of my check book, the filler C is ate tached to the covering member'B by sliding the anchoring tongue 33 into the pocket 22. The backing member B, andthe filler fC therein, may then be folded between the ends thereof. As may be seen in Figure 4, an area on each side of the longitudinal center of the covering member B, comprising the strip {4, is'not reinforced by any reinforcing stiffening member I I l2 or 23, permitting the covering member to fold readily at this point... The memorandum portion 35, being in length less than one half the length of the check pad 2'I,need not be folded, and is enclosed within the folds of the check pad 21 when the book A is in folded position.
To hold the book A closed, it is only necessary to hook the closure hook l5 over the bound end of the filler C. As the filler C is attached to the end of the covering member 13 opposite to that bearing the hook I5, the book A will be held in closed position in this simple manner. If desired, the hook flange l8 of the closing hook l5 may engage into a pocket such as 22, to hold the end of the covering member supporting the hook l5 directly to the opposite end of the cover. In such a construction, some other means of providing support for thechecks to the covering member is used. As has been noted, the hook I5 is recessed or spaced inwardly from the edge of the covering sheet I0, so that the hook I5 will not engage other articles which may be kept in the same pocket or purse, and so that this hook cannot engage or tear the fabric with which the check book A may come into contact.
Although I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be readily understood that various changes coming within the spirit of my invention may suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, and hence I do not wish to be limited to the specific form shown or uses mentioned, except to the extent indicated in the appended claims, which are to be interpreted as broadly as the state of the art will permit.
