1 Claim.
This invention relates to shuttles for looms, and appertains particularly to shuttles in which the cop is tightly held.
In many types of weaving, as for example, where the yarn is coarse or stiff, and which peel off of the outside of the cop too freely, or where it is desired to get the maximum quantity of yarn on the cop, the cop is made of maximum dimension to tightly fit the shuttle chamber, into which it has to be forced, the yarn being paid out from the interior of the cop.
In the case of paper yarns, these are so solidly incorporated in the cop that it is substantially incompressible and has to be driven into the shuttle with a mallet or the like. This procedure frequently splits the shuttle.
Then again, cops vary somewhat in diameter. One may be so small that it cannot be fitted tightly in the shuttle chamber; another so large that it can only be inserted with the use of excessive force.
The present invention has for its object an improvement in shuttles which adapts them to tightly receive solidly wound cops, regardless of some variance in their diameter, and without the exercise of undue force in inserting them into the shuttle.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a shuttle with a cop chamber having a resilient yielding side member adapted to yield to the insertion of the cop, but to press the cop sufliciently'to hold it in fixed position in the shuttle.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a yielding pad of sponge rubber or the like on one side of the cop chamber, so that the cop may be conveniently inserted by rolling it down the rubber pad to its proper position in the cop chamber.
Other objects of the invention will appear, as the following description of a preferred and practical embodiment thereof proceeds.
In the drawing throughout the several figures of which the same characters of reference have been employed to designate identical parts:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a shuttle embodying the features of the present invention; and
Figure 2 isa cross-section taken along the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring now in detail to the several figures, the numeral I, represents the shuttle which may be made of wood, as is usual, or of any other desired substance, and having the cop chamber 2. The reference character 3 represents the cop, which by way of illustration, is wound with paper yarn. The paper yarn is characterized by being coarse, so that it is highly desirable, in order to avoid too rapid a sequence of shuttle interchangements, to get as much yarn as possible on the cop. Consequently, the cop is wound to such a large diameter that it canonly be inserted into the cop chamber by the exercise of force. The cop may be so tightly wound as to be substantially incompressible, so that if it were hammered into the cop chamber in the conventional shuttle, the risk of splitting the shuttle would be great.
In order to avoidthe disadvantages of having to force the cop into the shuttle by impact, I have provided one side of the shuttle chamber with a pad 4 of soft sponge rubber or the like. Said pad is substantially as long as the cop, and preferably as wide as the depth of the cop chamber, or very nearly so. The side 5 of the shuttle chamber which is to receive the pad 2 is preferably formed with a recess 6 undercutting the flange I. The rubber pad 4 is preferably beveled or chamfered, as shown at 8, so as to form a reduced edge 9 which fits under the flange 1, being protected by said flange against being torn loose by the drag caused by the insertion of the cop.
The rubber pad is preferably cemented in the recess 6.
The functioning of the yielding rubber pad will be obvious from Figure 2. The cop is pressed into the open top of the shuttle chamber against the inclined edge 8 of the rubber pad, and forced into its operative position by compressing the pad, as shown. The surface of the pad is substantially planiform throughout, and affords a tractive surface, the coefiicient of friction of which is greater than the plain wood surface of the side In of the cop chamber. Consequently, upon the cop being pressed down into the shuttle chamber, it rolls upon the surface of the pad, facilitating its entry intothe shuttle chamber, and preventing the pad from being dragged loose from its adhesive connection to the side of the shuttle. It will be understood to those skilled in the art that while the invention specifically illustrates and describes a pad of soft rubber, it is to be construed as sufficiently broad to include any yielding means whose frictional coefficient is such, relative to that of the opposite side of the shuttle chamber, as to permit the cop to be rolled into position.
While I have in the above description disclosed what I believe to be a preferred and practical embodiment of the invention, it will be understood to those skilled in the art that the details of construction and the arrangement of parts, as shown and described, are by way of example, and not to be construed as limiting the scope of th appended claim. What I claim as my invention is: 1 Shuttle, recessed to form a cop chamber, adapted to hold a cop in fixed position in the shuttle,
one side of said cop chamber being formed with a recess having an inwardly extending upper flange, and a yielding pad of material havin the frictional characteristics of rubber seated in said recess having its upper edge beveled to form a thin 5 edge overlain by said flange.
