Hllllll Patented Feb. 20, 1940 l UNITED STATES PATENTYOFFICE.
2,190,915 FOUNTAIN APPLICATORI Oliver J. Brown, Cincinnati, Ohio Application November 29, 1938. Serial o.242,971 3 Claims. (01. -133) This invention relates to a manicure implement and is especially directed to a fountain applicator for nail polish or the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a novel and an effective and eficient means for applying nail polish which is at present applied by means of a brush dipped into a bottle containing said polish.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simplified brush head having novel structural features and also means thereon for removably positioning a brush. 3
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved bulb for the discharge of a definite, limited quantity of polish.
Another object of the invention is to provide a means of manipulating the implement by means of a suitable holder.
Other objects resulting from particular combinations of the above features will be apparent from the following specification and drawing, in
which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of my nail polish ap-l Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional, detail view of the ball detent means of the implement.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged perspective view of the brush of the device.
The embodiment of my invention consists of a cylindrical barrel l0, preferably made of glass for containing the liquid nail polish. One end of the barrel is provided with exterior screw threads I! adapted to engage interior threads provided for removable closure cap l2. The other end of the barrel is fitted with a brush head generally indicated as 13 which may be frictionally held or threaded to the interior'surface of the barrel. The brush head has an integral reduced, elongated portion 54 at the outer extremity thereof and is also formed with a transverse shoulder it which is disposed at right angles to the direction of extension of the head. An elongated discharge opening it is formed at the outer end of the reduced portion and communicates with the interior of the barrel by means of a passageway ll formed in the head. It will be noted that the discharge opening and the passageway are disposed in a longitudinal alignment substantially centrally of the head interior and that 1 the discharge opening terminates a substantial distance from the shoulder l5, thereby providing a surface 18 adjacent and at right angles to said shoulder portion. A removable brush l5 comprising a metal band 20 provided with a slot 2| and anumber of bristles 22 bound together by said band is disposed adjacent the discharge opening l6 and extends beyond the outer end of the head l3. Means for positioning the brush comprises a flexible pin 23 which is embedded in the shoulder portion and is positioned therein in such manner as to receive the slot 25 formed in the band 20 to rigidly clamp said band between the pin and the surface [8. The brush is thereby rigidly fastened to the head and may be removed from time to time for replacement or cleaning. The end ofthe barrel to which the 1 head is positioned is provided with exterior threads 24 to which a cap 25, indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, may be threaded to protect said head when the implement is not in use.
The barrel is provided with a means for introducing a definite and limited quantity of polish through the discharge opening it and onto the brush l9 which comprises an integral flange 28 formed on said barrel adjacent the brush head. An elastic bulb 21 has a rounded portion extending from the circular rim 28 which is accessible to the thumb of the user when cap 29 is removed. ,The bulb is fastened to the interior surface of the rim by means of an annular shoulder 30 formed on said bulb which fits into an annular offset formed about the interior wall of the rim.
A holder 3| having an elliptical shape both in longitudinal and transverse cross-section is provided for the implement and has a circular, longitudinal groove 32 formed therein for receiving the barrel ID of said implement. Means for removably holding the barrel within the groove comprises a ball detent 33 countersunk in the holder with ball 34 resiliently protruding fromthe surface of the groove.
What is claimed is: 1. A nail polish applicator comprising a barrel for containing liquid polish, a brush head fitted ible pin embedded in the shoulder, and adapted to engage said slotted band tohold the bristle tuft in position, bulb pump means on the barrel, and a holder element for the barrel.
2. A nail polish applicator comprising a barrel, 2, brush head fitted to one end of the barrel and having a reduced, elongated portion at its outer end, a shoulder located transversely of and adjacent the inner endof the reduced portion, an elongated discharge: opening formed longitudinally in the reduced portion, a passage formed in the head and communicating with the interior of the barrel and the discharge opening, a slotted retaining band disposed adjacent the-.shoulder,-a number of brush bristles bound by the band and located adjacent the discharge -opening-and-ex tending beyond the reducediportiomand afiexib le pin embedded in the shoulder and adapted engage theslotted band to removably hold the 7 in the head and communicating with the interior of the barrel and the discharge opening, a slotted retaining band disposed adjacent the shoulder, a
number of brush bristles bound by the band and located adjacent the discharge opening and extendingabeyond the reduced portion, and a flexible pin embedded in the shoulder and adapted -to engage "the slotted band to hold the brush in position.
