Description
Feb. 13, 1940. G. CLAUSS FULL-FASHIONED STOCKING Filed May 13, 1939 R w u M 0 d 0 0L 4 U C a p- G a H Patented Feb. 13, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
One object of the present invention is to improve the appearance of, and add an ornamental aspect to, that portion of a full-fashioned stocking which lies at the back of the leg and above the heel, and generally to improve the appearance and attractiveness of ladies full-fashioned stockings.
Other objects of the present invention will appear from the following description at the end of which the invention will be claimed.
Generally stated, the invention consists in.- a full-fashioned stocking having a selvage seem at the back and having rows of fashioning marks and provided with lace construction between the fashioning marks and the selvage seam at both sides thereof and which may extend indefinitely up the leg. The invention also comprises the improvements to be presently described and finally claimed.
a lace structure at the back portion of the stocking,
Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating a modification of the lace design or pattern, and
30 Figs. 3 and 4 are, respectively, diagrammatic views illustrative of the following description of the production of the lace structure and of anonrun lace structure.
Referring to the drawing andmore particularly to Fig. l, I indicates generally straight rows of fashioning marks which result from the fashioning or shaping of the stoc ng. 2 indicates the customary seam by which he selvage edges are connected at the back of the stocking. In Fig. 1 the rows I of fashioning marks diverge in respect to the seam. 3 indicates a lace construction and it is defined by the fashioning marksv and extends to the selvage edges or, more accurately, the seem at the selvage edges. As shown in Fig. 1, the'lace structure is generally triangular but the shape, pattern'or design of the lace structure may be widely varied as will appear from the followinl description. The lace construction 3 is quite well understood but it is or may be produced by an operation that involves putting two loops c on one In the following description, reference will be needle b (Fig. 4) as well as other steps or proceedings well understood by those skilled in the art.
A non-run character may be imparted to the lace as is well understood by knitters and the operation involves in part putting 1 loop a on two needles b (Fig. 3) as well as, of course, other appropriate manipulations of the thread or yarn in respect to the needles. 7
The construction shown in the modification shown in Fig. 2 is as above described except as follows. The rows la of fashioning marks are not generally straight but are crooked and define what may be generally described as a broken outline for the lace,- which presents a series of generally diamond-shaped bodies of lace. The lace construction extends from or between the rows of fashioning marks la and the selvage seam 2.
From the foregoing description, it is evident that the outline of the lace, which is demarked by the fashioning marks, can'be widely varied and thatthe lace structure may be formed in a variety of ways customarily employed in making lace-on a knitting machine.
. Furthermore, additional lace structure may be provided above that already described and the additional lace structure may extend as far up the leg as desired. 1
' I claim:
1. A full-fashioned stocking having located in the leg portion thereof rows of fashioning marks and a selvage seam and provided on opposite sides of the seam with lace construction extending to the rows of fashioning marks and to the seam.
2. A hill-fashioned stocking having a selvage seam at theback thereofand having rows of fashioning marks that extend to said seam and provided with a lace construction defined and bounded by the rows of fashioning marks.
3. A stocking substantially as described in claim 1 and in which the lace structure is of a non-run construction.
4. A full-fashioned stocking having located in the leg portion thereof a seam and having fashioning marks located in the leg portion and dis- 4.5
posed in crooked rows in respect tothe seam and provided with lace construction on each side of said and bounded by said rows of fashioning demo cranes. q
