This invention relates to knitting needles and more particularly to an improved head for a knitting needle.

An object of this invention is to provide an improved knitting needle head which may be secured on one end of a knitting needle, the head embodying means whereby the user of the needle may be able to keep count of the various steps taken during the knitting of an article.

Another object of this invention is to provide an improved knitting needle head having associated therewith a counter or calculator which will assist in theknitting of an article as itwill permit the user of the needle to more readily keep track of the various steps being taken in the knitting operation without the use of a pencil and paper as is at present the case.

A further object of this invention is to provide a knitting needle and head which includes a revoluble cap provided with a window for ex-- posing numerals or other indicia carried by the head.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a knitting needle head which is not only provided with means to facilitate counting of steps taken in the knitting operation, but also provided with differentiating indicia so that where 1 two knitting needles are used, as is the usual and case, the steps taken in the use of one needle may be more readily determined.

To the foregoing objects and to others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

' Referring to the drawing, the numeral I! desig- 5 is a fragmentary side elevation of the nates generally a knitting needle provided with a substantially blunt point l3 at one end thereof.

The needle 10 at the opposite end is provided with a head generally designated as l l and which comprises a body l2 provided with a socket I4 in which the adjacent end of the needle I0 is adapted to be adhesively secured. The body I2 in the present instance is substantially cylindrical in transverse section and at its outer end merges into and axially of the inner face of a disc-like member i5 constituting a carrier having a diameter substantially greater than the diameter of the body. The member i5 is formed of an outer portion of uniform diameter and an inner portion l6 which gradually decreases in diameter from the said outer portion to the outer end of body i2. The outer face i! of member I 5'is of substantially conical or tapered configuration, and is provided with a circular row of spaced aligned numerals l8 disposed in close proximity to the edge of the outer portion of said member or carrier I5.

Rotatably mounted on and connected to the member I5 is a cap generally indicated at I9 and formed of a circular part 20 of substantially conical contour bearing against and conforming in contour to the outer face of member IS, an annular flange 2i encompassing the outer portion of the member l5, and a frusto-conical shaped flange 22carried by flange 2| and frictionally engaging with the portion it of the body l2. The cap IS in its part 20 and in proximity to its flange 2! is provided with an opening or window '23 for selectively exposing the numerals or indicia II. The part or top 20 of cap i 9 is also provided with a character 24 which is adapted to differentiate one needle from the other so that the user 6f these needles can readily determine from the numerals exposed through the window 23 what steps in the form of stitches or groups of stitches have been made with a particular needle. The peripheryof the cylindrical flange 2| is adapted to be knurled or otherwise roughened so as to facilitate rotation of the cap IS on the membe or carrier 15.

In the use of this device, the knitting needle 10 is adapted to be inserted in the socket I l and securely fastened by an adhesive or other securing means. The head ll may be formed out of substantially light weight material and the cap I! may be rotatably secured on the flange I! by crimping the inner portion 22 of the cap on the rear side of the portion it of member II. This crimped portion 22 is adapted to irictionally hold the cap l9 against rotation on the member l5 so that the cap I 9 will normally stay in its set position and permit normal use of the needle in without affecting the position of the cap ID. This device may be constructed at a small cost and if desired, may be constructed as a new articie of manufacture for mounting on a conventional needle wherein the usual head formed integral with the needle is cut oh so that ,the outer end of the needle may be secured by suitable fastening means in the form of an adhesive or the like in the socket forming part of the attachment.

What I claim is: v

1. A knitting needle head comprising a disclike carrier having an outer portion of uniform diameter and an inner portion gradually decreasing in diameter throughout inwardly from said outer portion, a socket forming means for mounting on and for securing to one endof the needle, said means being integral with said inner portion, said carrier being provided on a part thereof with spaced selectively exposable indicia,

and a rotatable cap mounted on the carrier and being formed with a part coacting with the said inner portion for connecting the carrier and cap together and for frictionally securing the cap, said cap including another part formed with a window forselectively exposing said indicia.

2. A knitting needle head comprising a disclike carrier having an outer portion of uniform diameter and an inner portion gradually decreasing in diameter throughout inwardly from said outer portion, a socket forming means for mounting on and for securing to one end of the needle, said means being integral with said inner portion, said carrier being provided on a part thereof with spaced selectively exposable indicia, a rotatable cap mounted on the carrier and being formed with a part coacting with the said inner portion for connecting the carrier and cap together and for frictionaliy securing the cap, said cap including another part formed with a window for selectively exposing said indicia, that part of the carrier provided with said indicia being of vided with the window corresponding in contour to and disposed in superimposed relation with respect to' that part of the carrier provided with theindicia.

A knitting needle head comprising a disclike carrier having an outer portion of uniform diameter and an inner portion gradually decreasing in diameter throughout inwardly from said outer portion, a socket forming means for mounting on and for securing to one end of the needle, said means being integral with said inner portion, said carrier being provided on a part thereof with spaced selectively exposabie indicia, a rotatable cap mounted on the carrier and being formed with a part coacting with the said inner portion for connecting the carrier and cap t0- gether and for frictionally securing the cap, said cap including another part formed with a window for selectively exposing said indicia, and that part of the cap provided with the window being formed on its outer face with a needle designator.

4. A knitting needle head comprising a disclike carrier having an outer portion of uniform diameter and an inner portion gradually decreasing in diameter throughout inwardly from said outer portion, a socket forming means "for mounting on and for securing to one end of the needle, said means being integral with said inner portion, said carrier-being provided on a part thereof with spaced selectively exposable indicia, a rotatable cap mounted on the carrier and being formed with a part coacting with the said inner portion for connecting the carrier and cap together and for frictionally securing the cap, said cap including another part formed with a window for selectively exposing said indicia, that part of the carrier provided with said indicia being oi conical contour, that part of the cap provided with the window corresponding in contour to and disposed in superimposed relation with respect to that part of the carrier provided with the indicia. and that part of the cap provided with the window being formed on its outer face with a needle designator.
