Jan. 23, 1940. I 'E,+ M ORE 2,188,227
TUBE HOLDER Filed March 23, 1958 7, MOO/Q5 INVENTOR.
A TTORNEYS.
Patented Jan. 23, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,188,227 TUBE HOLDER Eugene Theophilus Moore, Miami, Fla. Application March 23, 1938, Serial No. 197,710
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a holder for tubes of tooth paste, shaving cream or the like, one of the objects being to provide a holder which will serve not only to support the tube but also to close it while it is being supported.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a holder which maintains the supported tube in position where it can be easily grasped and removed and to which it can be applied readily following the expulsion of a portion of its contents.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character which can be manufactured at low cost and which can be set up readily for use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made inthe construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed. In the accompanying drawing the preferred forms of the invention have been shown.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder showing a tube supported and closed thereby.
Figure 2 is an enlarged transverse section through the upper portion of the holder and that portion of the container engaged thereby.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing a modified form of holder.
Figure 4 is a similar view showing another modification.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference I designates an attaching plate or base having an outstanding shelf portion 2 in the bottom of which is formed a channel 3 the side walls of which converge back toward the attaching plate I. The top wall of this channel is preferably lined with a soft material such as a thin sheet of cork, rubber or the like indicated at 4. Each side wall of the channel 3 has tapered ribs 5 so tapered and positioned as to properly engage diametrically opposed portions of threads T on a collapsible container C such as employed for holding tooth paste or the like. The front or wide end of the channel 3 is of a Width greater than the diameter of the threaded neck portion of the container so that said neck portion can be slid readily back into the channel until opposed portions of some of its threads are engaged by the adjacent ribs 5. Thus threaded necks of different diameters can be properly supported by nel until these threads are firmly engaged by the the ribs. The tube is pressed back into the chanribs after which the tube is given a partial rotation so that the threaded neck will be fed upwardly on the ribs until its open upper end is forced tightly against the lining of sealing material Consequently the container is complete- 5 ly closed. It is possible quickly to remove the container simply by giving it a partial unscrewing action and then sliding it forwardly.
Instead of providing the shelf portion 2 with a channel as shown at 3, it can be formed with 10 an opening 6 extending upwardly thereinto, the wall of the opening being screw-threaded so as to receive and engage the threaded neck T of a container C. Where this construction is used it is necessary to screw the neck upwardly into 15 the opening 6 to close the container and to unscrew it completely from the opening in order to remove the container. The same is likewise true of the modification shown in Figure 4 wherein, instead of providing a threaded recess, a 20 threaded stud l" is extended downwardly from the shelf and is adapted to project into and to be engaged by internal threads within the neck portion N of a modified form of container.
The holder can be made of any desired metal or plastic and obviously can be manufactured and 25 sold at a low figure.
What is claimed is:
l. A holder of the class described including a shelf portion, means for attaching the same to p a supporting structure, there being a channel in 30 the bottom of the shelf portion open at the bottom and at one end, the open end of the channel being of a width greater than the diameter of the threaded neck portion of a container to be supported, and superposed ribs upon opposed 35 walls of the channel for engaging opposed portions of the threads on container necks of different diameters.
2. A device of the class described including a shelf portion, means for attaching it to a sup- 40 port, a channel in the .bottom of said shelf portion open at the bottom and at one end and having straight side walls converging away from the open end, the width of the open end of the 45 channel being greater than the threaded neck portion of a container to be supported, sealing means carried by the top wall of the channel and extending from the open end to the closed end thereof, and ribs extending longitudinally of the walls of the channel for engagement with opposed portions of the threads on container necks of different diameters and constituting means for feeding any one'of said necks against the sealing means when its container is rotated. 55
