"In so doingythe hair sides of the pieces must be `turnedWupWard-or outward. and since the hair ltends-to overhang the edges of the-skin, theseedges are concealed ...from the view of the operator, kthus rendering it almost impossible to closely :assemble land mount the pieces withouteither overlapping or leaving Aintervening gaps, and consequently it is dificultto attain that smooth and close edge to edge matching orpiecing which is desired .and which disposes the scrap to the best advantages for the eicient carrying yout of subsequent de- ,ihairing operations.
Having the above mentioned and other objecftions to hand assembling and pasting of fur lscrap, or whole skins or pelts, as the case may be, 'to a carrier or backing sheet in View, it is an object of this vinvention to provide a novel :apparatns vwhereby the :assembling of fur Vscrap pieces or even `whole-skins bythe operator in desired closely disposed-edge to edge relation may be more easily and rapidly carried on, and I whereby the pieces are automatically brought i101 Linto .engagement with and secured to a glue r'coated Acarrier or backing sheet.

Cooperative with that portion of the beltv or apron I8 which runs over and around th'e drum I4 is an endless presser belt or apron 20 which substantially corresponds in width to the width of the belt ork apron I8. Said presser belt or apron 26 is preferably made of rubberized canvas or similar material. The means for driving the presser belt or 40 apron 28 and associated belt or apron I8 comprises a main drive shaft 21 mounted in bearings 28 at one end of the supporting frame, said shaft 21 being suitably driven from a source of power, as e. g. by belt actuated fast and loose drive pulleys 29. Aixed on said drive shaft 21 is a drive sprocket 30 which actuates a drive chain 3| that engages a driven sprocket 32 axed to said driven shaft 26. By this power transmission means the driven roller 24 is rotated in a clockwise direction, thus driving the pressure belt or apron' 20, and by its frictional engagement with I8, directly or through interposed material, causing the latter and its supporting drum I4 to run in an anti-clockwise direction.
Means are provided for drawing oft' sheet material from a supply roll and thereupon coating a face of the same with an adhesive, to thus furnish a flexible carrier or backing sheet upon which the pieced fur scrap is to be mounted. This means comprises a pair of bearing brackets 33 to support, at the forward end of the apparatus, a transverse spindle 34 upon which is rotatably mounted a roll of sheet material 35, such, e. g., as paper. Mounted between the side members IIJ of the frame of the apparatus, in a location above the drum I4, is means for applying liquid glue or like cementitious substance to a face of the sheet material 35 preparatory to applying the pieced fur scrap thereto, the same comprising a glue reservoir 36 in which is revolved a transverse coating roll 31, the shaft 38 of which is provided with a pulley 38 over which runs a drive belt 40 from a drive pulley 4I operated by said main shaft 21. Mounted upon and idler roller I 5 and the the presser belt l or .the leading end portion of the coated sheet material 35 may pass between said pressure belt or lapron 20 and the belt A"and moved therebetween I8, so as to be gripped together with the pieced fur to,v be applied to the glue coated face of said sheet material, as will be subsequently more fully explained.
Suitably supported between the side members I0 of the apparatus frame is a. table or plate 44 which-underlies the belt or apron I8 along the extent of the latter moving between the upper pressure belt or apron supporting idler roller 2I.
Mounted beneath and in opposition to said pressure belt or apron supporting idler roller 2I, is a spring pressed pressure roller 46 to yieldably urge the forwardly moving courses of said belt or apron I8 and pressure belt or apron 20 together so as to operatively grip the sheet material 35 and pieced fur scrap interposed therebetween.
In the use of the apparatus, the fur scrap to be pieced is deposited within the hopper or bin I9,
`and the operator, standing beside the apparatus,
takes therefrom the pieces of fur scrap 41, or whole skins as the case may be,l and lays them upon the belt or apron I8 while the latter moves slowly forward toward the drum I4. 'Ihe operator starting at the far margin of said belt or apron, applies the pieces of fur scrap 41, fur side down, across the same, being careful to bring the margins of said pieces as closely contiguous as possible, thus forming a layer of closely pieced fur across the width and along the length of said belt or apron I8, as the latter moves forward. -The frictional effect exercised -by the roughened surface of the belt or apron I8 upon the hair side of the fur pieces or skins causes the latter to be held thereon against displacement from the pieced assembled relation in which the Ioperator has disposed the same. In the meantime, the glue coated carrier or backing material 35fis moved to pass between apron 20 and said belt or apron I 8, and in such manner that its glue coated face is opposed to the wire screen belt or apron. As the belt or apron I8 carries the assembled piecedfur scrap forwardly, the upwardly facing skin sides of the latter are opposed to the glue lcoated face of the carrier or backing material 35, as it passes therewith between the presser belt orapron 20 and the belt or apron I8, and thence around the drum I4, so that said skin sides of the assembled fur scrap are pressed against and adhered. to the carrier or backing material 35 during the travel thereof around the drum'I4.
InI the operation of matching and piecing the fur scrap while assembling the same on the belt or ,apron I8, there is likelihood that portions of the fur scrapv pieces will overhang the near margin of the belt or apron I8toward which the operator works when piecing the fur scrap in assembled relation thereon.
